I do love pia Toscano‘s voice too, but I found the needed to defend Loren Allred more. And I know that you know that Loren Allred is fantastic, but in my opinion you didn’t appreciate this particular performance the way that I feel it should’ve been appreciated, so I gave my own viewpoint in my last post

Here is my vocal analysis. Loren Allred finds ways of combining the jazzy styles of old Hollywood with the modern belting technique of today. Listen to how she begins her first phrase in this song, that trembly vibrato with a bit of air, doesn’t that sound like something you would hear in an old Hollywood movie with say Judy Garland or somebody? The way that she’s slowly pronounces each word, drawing out the phrase very slowly. That sounds to me like how an old Hollywood singer would sing it. I can’t describe it with words, so you need to replay that very beginning phrase that she sings. And the emphasis and the pauses she puts on certain words throughout the song , she’s really telling the story vocally as well as physically. She manages to combine resonance with a light and airy tone which is a delicate balance. But when she belts, she has this ringing quality that is so natural to her, you barely see the effort at all. She has mastered that completely. She has this way of rounding out the vowels at the end of her words that is quite rare to my ears. And she has a full yet forward quality to her tone, a blend that is not mastered by everybody the way that she has mastered it.
You’re seeing a lot of flaws with Loren Allred, and to me this is one of her best performances ever. The way that she was phrasing on this song was completely stealing the show for me. Oh well! And then the way that she goes into a belt… I can’t think of anyone else in the world who does it quite like that.

Pia Tuscano it is an American Idol alum. From like a decade ago. She hasn’t really been heard of much from since then, so don’t feel bad. She works a lot with David Foster though, singing a lot of Céline Dion songs, often singing them note for a note if you ask me. But she does have a great voice of her own. She has popped up more in the last couple of years than we’ve seen of her in the last decade, and for that I’m glad for her.
Apples and oranges here. Pia's vocals over clouded Loren's. For the most part Loren held her own but she did fall a little short especially in the beginning. Loren does have a classic style to her singing and Pia reminds me of a young Barbara Streisand. Pia did have that fullness in her voice and her changes were spot on. I did love the blend of both vocals, is where they both shined. This was a good one Zoe.
Should hear shelea and Pias ones if you haven’t more balanced imo
So maybe context will help- the original of this song (if not already aware) is between Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion… it’s a masterpiece duo. And their voices in the original blend well but also showcase different aspects. For example, Barbara has a nasal and more stylistic quality that’s warm and comforting while Celine does what she does best and just blows you away with her belts and clear tone. It’s the marriage of the two women- both in the subject of the song and the singing of it that make it so great.
I think they tried to recreate that in this performance and maybe it was a miss… but I thought it did the original justice in many ways.
I would have had Pia match Loren in some of those choruses and then pop up to the high notes for dynamics, but otherwise I imagine they studied the original and wanted to play the parts.

Great reaction Zoe & loved the critique. Just another reminder to react to a new artist for you, Amira Willighagen whom I’ve mentioned a couple of times. Her performance of “Ave Maria by Gomez at the Canisius Church “ at age 11 is just one example of her unique abilities showcasing her exceptional range; her superb voice control , together with power & passion. Katty sings in Chinese so people won't get the lyrics. But if they just sit back, relax and adjust to her wavelength after a while they will get what it is all about. -Not vocal fireworks, but handling of the softest of tones.
If you want to present to the world a unique young artist that "no-one" ever heard here is the chance to do it.
