The thing is he's not trying to act black ... When many white people surround themselves with black people they try act black to fit in and they overcompensate to the point where they almost become a stereotype you see it with a lot of white girls who date black guys ... Gary Owens is a white dude who just happens to be surrounded by black people ... I come from a interracial family nobody in my family is pretending to be something their not there's no cartoonish stereotypes but you still pick up on things and it goes both ways
@@ddcs0s I always hated when I'd meet a white girl who "only dated black guys" and in reality she sexually fetishized black men and didnt care if she put 10 of them on child support and had them thrown in prison. I also like that Gary doesnt just bend over and act gay like most white comedians, he has dignity and respect for himself & all races can see it and feel it.
Gary keeps his private life so private that his friends are just now learning things about him.
To be honest he has mentioned this soo many times in his comedy shows/segments/specials
Shaq had to know that....because Gary has done many jokes about his Navy days. The ones he did talking about his time as Navy Police is funny asf. I think Shaq played that off so there can be a natural joke convo...vs questions only style interview

My mother and I met Gary Owen in person a few years back.
He is truly authentic and very sweet.
And respectfully he is kind of built like a brotha no lie. My mother and I were shocked to see how tall and how big he really is in person.
He came up to my mother and gave her a hug and kiss before he left the comedy club.

Shaq your people are my people even though I’m white I rented a house in Compton for three months while I was doing metal fabrication and welding for custom sound studios in LA. Hands down to this day one of the greatest neighborhoods I have ever lived in. Once I met the neighborhood homies the showed me the same respect I showed them was a lot of fun every weekend. You should of heard the jokes when I would come to the weekend cookouts with anyone other than a white girl.

Shaq probably doesn't recall... but, I literally bumped into you, Shaq, about 20 yrs ago at the Cheescake Factory in Sherman Oaks, and literally just stared up in awe. I was just stuck, and didn't get a chance to shake your hand. I think that was 2002 or 2003, somewhere in that range.

I respect the hustle from both of you, Gary Owen, and Shaq of course... Gary being a Navy MA3, and then driving back and forth from SD to perform, and his story of getting brought before an eval board with the CWO flipping out - that's a real hustler. Dedicated to his craft.
