Thoughts on these custom portable consoles that AliExpress keeps making? 🧐
Their sussy
They are mostly crappy
@@Flegz1 true
Neat but way too expensive.
Out of the $500 spent on that, about $480 was used in bubble wrap and the other 20 was in the SD card.
The DreamCast startup on this portable handheld is actually from the Katana DevKit, which was the development kit used for the DreamCast
☝🏻🤓
So they used a rare Dreamcast to build it? What if it's worth more than the handheld lmao
@@zilvi9501 no just a BIOS mod, you can get Region free bios chips that use it all the time.
They should have just used the original intro. This one just kills the experience of having the console imo.
That screen crack actually got me, well done! 💙👍
Me too 😂
@@fernandot.9962 me too
If the sound effect wasn't there I would've actually thought it was broken
@@OGCXSH same here if only he didn't use that, and pretended it really broke for a minute or something
Haha same
Keep an eye on those batteries. Having the heat sink right on top of them means they'll get damaged pretty easily.
If you're using the Micro SD card that came with it, that may explain the poor load times. A lot of things from China come with cheap SD cards with poor transfer speed.
Lol that screen break edit killed me
good
Lol,the screen size 🤷♂️
When girls say size dont matter, know we know they lie
Lol the whole thing is lol Ali Express should be named rip off Express just about as bad as dkolodies lol 😂
@@FriendlyRider88 dkoldies just sells crusty old consoles AliExpress just sells things that are crappy in general
Reminds me of the Sega Nomad
@@FriendlyRider88 at least effort had to be put in to this. DK oldies just resells ebay lots at scalper prices
1:19 bro my heart dropped
The startup on this system is the startup from Dreamcast dev kits!
It is! And I managed to swap the bios chip for one that had this boot up sequence. Most likely that's what they did there as well.
The screen crack effect always gets me. Thanks Jacob R for this awesome video
That thing looks retro it looks like it’s made in the 1990’s reminds me a bit of the game gear
It’s the video now lol
the image being shifted on the screen means the weird DC signal is not being interpreted correctly by the display. same thing happens if you don't set the DTV setting correctly on an OSSC with a real dreamcast.
Honestly, the inside doesn't look that bad. Cables might look a bit messy but it's not as bad as some other mobile conversions i have seen
With a few ribbon cables you could make that birds nest of wires something decent. Just remember that there are multiple types of ribbon cables. There are multiple layer ribbon cables and Single layer cables. There are also single and double insulation types that you can possibly use in addition to enamel, rubber, silicone, plastic, and other coatings that you can choose from. Some coatings are more durable than others and some are better for data transmission and other things. All in all you can easily make a system that is able to potentially make a device that look thrown together in a frenzy into a device to be proud of. You could also potentially add quick disconnects with the ribbon cables and have an easy repair system for the device. If you are wondering I'm a big fan of your devices actually belonging to you and you being able to make any changes that you want if they are actually better or not or if they are hard modifications or not it should all be your own ability and if you want to pay someone else for the work that you want done you should be able to do that too regardless of what the manufacturer says that goes for repairs too.
The portable PS2 is still my favorite. It looks so authentic for what it is. Great video!
Bro you had me dying I actually thought the screen cracked for a second 🤣 1:24
I like how EVERY TIME Jacob peels off the screen protector, the screen "breaks" as a meme
dreamcast actually used a hall effect sensor so if this replaced it with a ps4 stick they actually downgraded it
What's weird to me is that this portable looks like it has so much potential, a lot of things done well but a lot of things that are so questionable (especially the screen haha). It's interesting tho
THAT CRACKED SCREEN EDIT GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK
I don't think that's a GDEmu in there. GDemu has its own menu whereas this uses DreamShell and talks about an IDE loader.
In fact i wouldn't be surprised if the MicroSD card is in a CompactFlash adapter.
Haha man I really thought the screen shattered… excellent trick.
It made me flinch 😅
While neat but rough, I will say that the Dreamcast is one of the consoles where emulation on a portable PC would be much easier, since projects like ReDream are near perfect in terms of emulation.
Also, that D-Pad... OOF.
I like the dreamcast controllers but they are slightly too small for my hands now a days and certain games cramp my hands if I have to use the triggers a lot.
i remember i hated analog stick. And had to replace it on one from ps1
Jacob thank you for buying this stuff, so we don't have to 😂
Absolutely love the idea of this!
AliExpress... Oh boy. Home of some amazing consoles from China.
I would love to be able to afford the original Dreamcast, PS1,PS2,PS3, Xbox 360
where you located? Here in Oklahoma I can find a ton of dreamcast stuff for under 100 easily. I have 2 consoles I picked up for probably 25, or 30 a piece
The editor had me fooled with the cracked screen touché 🤣
you're welcome
I regret selling my dream cast. Super ahead of it’s time
you can always pay $600 dollars for one from DKOldies 😄
when n64 came I decided to sell all my SNES stuff to help pay for n64 games... bad mistake.
@@retro5014 The N64 has that early 3D charme though - every game feels like a psychedelic dream with those cubistic polygon shapes lol
@@zoyboy1914 It had a lot of great games for such a small library, but didn't have heck all for RPGs and its fighting games were a lot lackluster compared to other systems at the time. It's amazing how Nintendo released their best system IMO in early 90s and one of their worst ones right after.
@@retro5014 Yeah very true, I‘d go as far as to claim it didn‘t have 1 worthwhile RPG (if you discount Paper Mario) lol. It had some funky fighting games that looked fun but played so badly haha. I‘m more of an action/fps/platformer guy so it comes down to preference it seems :P
When he said the buttons where dirty my mind was like "oh here we fuckin go again!" LOL
I used to not like you because I wish I could be like you but now I see that you make people happy so thanks for spending your money to make content for us instead of just buying and bragging like most people
1:24 That legit startled me
Not using a GDemu, gdemu actually loads fast and has no issues.
Thats dreamshell, it uses the port in the back of the console, which is slow and incompatible with a bunch of games.
Dang man that its like a noodle cup when you opened it
😂
1 thing always bothers me with these handhelds , if you already need to use a sd card and pay a ton of money are people not better of getting a steam deck or one of the anbernic or miyoo devices?
I agree it’s completely pointless. You might as well get an emulator at that point. If they were going to make these portable systems, they should include the disk drive.
@@justalittletrt4670 lmao, do you realize how large a disc drive is? It's completely pointless to have a disc drive on a portable. They're big, heavy, and draw a lot of power. Sd cards are small, huge in storage, and fast.
Get a card, dump your cd's into it and done.
The point of these portables is original hardware. There's no emulation going on, it's a real Dreamcast made into a portable. That's why they do it.
Emulating games still isn’t 100% fool proof running games on original hardware gives you the most reliable and accurate way to play the game
Because it runs on original hardware and it's not emulated. If you don't care about that then no need to spend for a steam deck even, just buy one of those attachable phone gamepads and you can emulate all these systems perfectly on any modern smartphone.
I used to love playing Daytona USA. I once played in a tournament and did pretty well
waiting for you to say it smells like some kind of smoke about 100x.
Jacob : today we will be unboxing a portable house
The Mike finigan of video games💪🏻
Totally got me with the screen crack. I gasped hahaha
it better be fully refurbished
And we know why should it be lol
The screen crack actually startled me for a second
I love the portable home console series
I can't believe the screen crack got me again lolol
Other then the screen size that's a cool device!
"that shoddy craftsmanship brings shame to all hedgehog kind"
I'm actually surprised they got a hardware board in there, most of this type of thing just settles for something like a Pi running emulators. unfortunately they basically did that anyway, so why not save space, go full emu and focus on the screen?
That thing is a boulder. I really thought that screen cracked too. Haha
the heart bubble wrap is cute ngl
It's so cool dk oldies are selling these. Did you use a coupon code?
Read the tittle. It's from aliexpress
@@kydigadig r/woosh
insane a Steam Deck would demolish this handheld for less the price, thanks brother for taking the hit on buying this product first lmao
Zoo by my house had a gd emu. Thing was so loud. Eventually they sent it to a bigger zoo.
the insides reveals lots of wasted potential. I'm confident it could be made 1/3 of the thickness if they bothered to craft some stackable assembly, like having some custom flex cables between the genuine motherboard and front stuff for display and buttons, then having batteries distributed as two rows under each trigger area (and so in the grips extrusions) which also avoid the danger of cooking on top of the heatsink!
Cool idea but that screen is TINY. Would be cool if you could hook up a larger screen on top of the unit.
Great video lad keep up with the work ps I'm new here to your channel
I don't like that they printed the main housing in off-white and then painted it black . That means it'd scratch up and look horrible in time .
1:37 why did they use a PS4 analog I think because it's cheaper.
Neat, but too expensive like the Portable PS2. I’ll just emulate DC on Steamdeck.
This
*Bro Finally Stopped Talkin' About DkMoldies💀*
I was about to comment this. He actually made 10 videos about them
@@saki3963 yeah:3
Original hardware > PFGA > Emulation.
But in this case, I feel like emulation with a SteamDeck or like device is the way to go. That screen size is embarrassing.
Funnily enough, the second you said you were gonna rate it my mind thought "3" and bam. 3 lol
I’m sure the screen has a nice personality
Dkoldies be like that will be a third party controller
It's a really cool concept
The ps4 thumbstick is a big plus. The Dreamcast thumbstick was just a slippery plastic piece with dots
They used an analog that’s prone to drifting…
As opposed to the DC og which wouldn’t
You got me, totally got me there lol.
3:10 Dreamcast dev kit
Hilarious... you were in arcades in the 90s? Haha right and I remember when gas was 50c
Never a fan of people gutting up real systems to make handhelds. If it was a one-off console that was bought broken I get it, but seeing people make these regularly just to resell is just harsh and hits on the amount of og consoles out there.
I have played a portable N64 made by a friend back when, and it was pretty great, but with how easy it is to emulate I feel it's more economical to just have a multigame thing or softmod a psp nowadays.
Looks like a Vtech toy I had when I was 8 😂
I'd rather get a PS5 for 500$ and just play my 40$ dreamcast when the mood strikes. Ffs
Lol that thing is so big and clunky I thought there was an actual disc drive in there
Who can tell me the best portable, for the price, that comes pre loaded on hard drive or sd? I've been trying to find the right one for like 6monthes but don't wanna pay over 250$
Pfft. Miiyoo mini v2?
They're all trash. Just get a real gaming console.
The console is dirty bc the builder played it while building the system. This was very common years ago when a lot of us where building these portables.
I think I know who made that that Pacific portable looks really familiar
1:38 ...Maybe is it because the original DC analog stick is the worst we've seen since the N64's? Hard to say.
Very industrial design
2 different portable dreamcasts, one without the VMU, one with the VMU.
is it refurbished?
It’s a thick boy with a tiny screen lol but I guess it is kinda cool
That screen looks normal. Large even. It’s a fantastic sized screen
cope
1:24 jump scare
games and cutscenes struggle when running off SD and usb sticks, this is most likely the reason with your load problems
If it were using a GDEmu this wouldnt happen. It's using a dreamshell, a much older mod that used the serial port on the dreamcast to read CF cards so it is incredibly slow.
Whoever used that tiny screen should legally be lashed 80x a day, for a whole month
If you look closely, it’s a 3-D printed case. Looks like a really cool project for the home hobbyist, but selling this for $500 is near criminal. Lol. 😂 No way.
pretty cool
The blue board in an Arduino mega 2560
First glance thought it was a game gear.
Why is it almost 20 ads in one video
I only had a couple
Looking at it opened up, it looks like a dirty bomb.
thank you!
it looks very cheap. it won't last long. probably around 1 year of constant use.
would never pay 500 usd
would pay 50 for it just for the lolz
DKoldies would sell that for $2000 lol
And dirty inside with off color outside 🤣
My most expensive purchase from aliexpress was a Neo Geo MVS in a AES shell, other than having a bad flex cable and needing to repair it 100% worth it.
They sent me the replacement parts free of charge. It also can act as a pass through for other arcade boards which is nice.
P.S. Considering the load times on it I think it might be using the serial port sd mod, Which is a lot slower and does have video playback problems.
It's even weirder than that, they're using the much harder to install CF mod. @ 3:40 You can see the text from Dreamshell using the IDE loader, and you can just barely see the CF to SD card slot poking out of the top of the system at the same time. Why they'd go that far for a portable they sell en-masse, I have no idea.
Man everything about that is scary gross looking like run Forrest run kind of thing and the buttons is a shity knock off but you know still kinda interesting in a weird way. Thank you for your new videos
Buy a retroid pocket 3+ a miyoo mini or the steamdeck. This was a waste of money.
lmao, that big thing and just a small screen.
That d pad looks like it's going to fall out
Screen might be at least 5”😢
