In this series of video, Alex Skolnick shows you how to play a jazz arrangement of the Metallica classic, "Fade to Black," from the new Alex Skolnick Trio album, Veritas. Here, Alex shows you how to play the song's intro, which is similar to the original but played an octave higher, and also a series of harmonics he plays over the intro. Live, he uses a looping pedal to play both parts.
Alex is one of the best and most underrated guitar players EVER! He isn't only talented (like sooo amny) but hes as very decent musical-education. He can play all: Metal, Thrash, Pop, Classic, Fusion, Jazz..
He is a F.Zappa type.
That's by far the coolest freaking personal arrangement outside of the original I've ever heard! Love how he plays up in the 7th-10th positions with harmonics. Extremely underrated guitarist and awesome creative version.
Robert Brown hell yeah i noticed the harmonics
i love this dude, such an awesome guitarist and a nice dude all around
Imagine if Alex did a record with Metallica, I love Kirk but with Alex the solos would be a big step up for sure.
Kirk no longer play exact solos
Alex solos, are x100000 better than Kirk solos
Why’s everyone always bash Kirk? I think both are good
@Whip Lash Are you deaf ?
@Tushar Sharma Are you deaf ?
So amazing and awesome! Alex is one of the best!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
alex your underated. your just as good as marty
you’re but yes true
That guitar is gorgeous. I want it.
Wow… those harmonics are really pretty on top of that. Really cool.
Alex is under rated but one of my fav lead guitarist! I assume because he is so humble no one notices but, dang his work Testament are legendary!
Great guitar player Mr Alex Skolnick!!!
I remember on one of his articles at guitar world were he made a tapping version of Hotel California. He's one of the innovative guitarist, simply the best!
I love this stuff here.
Maybe bcuz im not so into heavy(er) stuff but a natural jazz/blues feller and the hard edge brings new things my way.
Love it!!!
Alex is my all time favorite guitar player
Amazing musician.
That tone is beautiful
That is such an awesome guitar!
It's such a beautiful song....
He is just Alien great....
I love the way he talks. :)
his tone is amazing here
Alex Scholnicks guitar playing is intense and thought provoking go check out Testaments practice what you preach album if you don't believe me .He can shred with melody and substance like Marty Freedman .He also plays for Trans Siberian Orchestra and those guys can play.This is basically jazz arrangements of rock songs he put on a cd with his band .A well versed musician in all styles .You can't break that plateu of your playing if your so musically close minded.
ALEX RULES!!!
So correct me if I’m wrong... I understand that saying that is RUclips comment section suicide... but is jazz just a harder version of notes that make essentially the same sound with more difficult finger positions
the pickguard is them same color as the guitar.That is beautiful
alex is cool. so is the skunk do. i like his playing a lot. but I like that guitar even more.
This is a Good Damn Guitarist!!! waw!!
White streaks are always epic looking, I have white hairs on the side of my head, I hope more of them come out.
@movarshaq it's a Heritage H 575.
near the end, notice how he starts picking near the neck pickup, but slowly keeps getting closer to the bridge.
Not to be rude and all and i love alex's playing ...but has he had a stroke or something?
Alex Skolnick? Is this not the Testament guitarist? Holy fuck, I love this guy! Guys complaining about a lack of a solo, really need to check out the "Over the Wall" solo written by him for Testament. It is just pure awesomeness. Thrash at it's best in this kids opinion.
Alex was a teenager when the first Testament album came out. His playing on that album is otherworldly.
This is why Jazz is so powerful... watched the video and still didn’t understand the purpose or where the hell he was going with those f*cked up chord shapes
wait, what did he say his role model for using open strings was? I didn't catch it.
I have no idea why everyone's talking about Metallica and Dream Theater when you could be watching all the lessons on here;

Is there any scale that has all the elements of a major scale, but with a flat sixth and flat seventh?
ANKIT AMAR KASHYAP Mixolydian b6, the fifth mode of melodic minor.
@@woodchuk1 thanks man.
You don't know how much greatful I'm to you. Discovered this while messing around the fretboard and didn't know what the heck did I just play. Until you told me of course.
ANKIT AMAR KASHYAP No problem, glad I could help!
Why would anyone take offense to that? It's a perfectly reasonable critique.
2:34 I was instantly reminded of Diary of a Madman
Best song.
Really felt the same way as alex about this song
nice tone
What are the little metal parts on the head stock that the strings go under. They are used mostly on fenders for instance the strat. It's not the nut or the tuners/tuning pegs
I think you’re referring to what’s called a “string tree,” if I’m not mistaken. It helps keep the strings from coming unseated from the nut slot, and is needed on Fenders because the headstock is flat and doesn’t angle back from the neck.
@sparkelius you spoke the truth!
@TheGhhgv
he has had that skunk style white hair streak since the early 90s
Out!!! Kirk.... Alex is the best!!!!!
YEAH HERITAGE GUITAR!
@MrKornballs James and Kirk don't know how to play jazz. This is a Jazz version he made! and it's part one so maybe he'll show us the solo.
@StodernReturns what do you mean HD?
a master! just it!
Alex is great, I'd almost rather hear him talk about music than play music. ALMOST.
HHAHAHAHA he has crazy cat lady hair!!!!!
61 dislikes? That's bullshit
Where is part two?!
@ChucklesMginty YES! I wanted to say that!
what guitar is he using?
Com todo respeito Alex......Que enrolação hem..........Transmita lessons com conteúdo, você tem conhecimento para isso ! Valew bro.........
cool : )
@anippani I never liked any of Kirk's solos except the Unforgiven that is just fucking mind melting, I think Kirk would be cool to hang with cuz as a person he's deffs a tank but as a guitar player I think he is lacking quite a bit, not to pull the Megadeth V Metallica card but I was more a Megadeth fan then a Metallica fan :P I'm not one of "those guys" though and I respect if you prefer Megadeth
This lesson will consist of 17 parts because he'll be talking for 75 percent of the time.
@anippani But he does live, so you can infer that James told him not to use it cuz he uses it too much, and hater no, I usually don't put down other musicians but saying Kirk Hammett is better then Alex is like saying Slash is better Joe Bonamassa, or the Satch man himself, everyone's got their own opinions, but come on recycled pentatonic licks VS a guy whose never used the same lick more then twice, no contest now a good argument would be Alex VS Friedman
he talked a little,but he played perfectly
Alex skolnick es el puto amo
dig the skunk stripe, bro
@outtacastatv indeed...
wgere is part 2...?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
skip to 2:10!
sweeny todd hair :D
O.O me encanta esa guitara xD
@FazSaber Also makes him look a little like Joe Perry :)
Over the wall please Alex.
Why is he teaching us how he plays Fade to Black?
I understand it's a great song, I love it myself. But why isn't he teaching us his stuff? His solos are better anyways
Only the first part of the lesson. Like an intro
You learn a lot about a player by listening to the stuff that influenced them.
Because he wants to?
Is that an older version of Sam Totman ? xd
.. Recently done by metallica called fade to black.. Well that's fast hahahahah
You did not just say dream theatre is better than Metallica!
Metallica seriously kicks dream theatres ass any day
Like 1984 is "recently"...
@4:10
imma be an immature asshole rite tehe he said g string lol jk this was a pretty cool video i always enjoy Alex's playing
What is up wit with um
metallica wen u were in high school?? how old r u LOL!?
All about Jame's misery about his guitars and equipment being stolen...
Hey, it's Metallica, what else could we expect?
Cut to the chase and fucking play!!!!
he looks like the bad bro from kingpin.
hes got a strong californian accent, surfer accent to be specific lol
Блин, круто же!!!
everithing's good but where's jazz arranhement?
me llega que mucho habla carajo
Dude
Technically speaking, Dream Theater are much more talented. Metallica pretty much created thrash metal though and their first 4 albums were groundbreaking.
@guitarlordification Pat Metheny
talk talk talk
Great player, guitar and song. But the other parts of this series are butchered by your crappy on-site player, @guitarworld. It's a pity.
bla bla bla!! Jump to 2:16 if you wanna cut the crap !!
ok, wrong powerchords. i dont want to learn some covered version, i want to learn the original one...
o some
you musnt say high school
Sweeny tood hair :D
Wish Alex be in the Place of Kirk Shit Hammet
Jason King It would be great)))
@sexybeast507 Yeah okay there buddy, you're living in a dream world bud, you do know that all Kirks solos sound the same right? the dude doesn't understand anything that isn't penatonic, and don't even get me started on the wah, I'm all for wah and when you think about Zakk Wylde uses wah more then Hammett but Zakk uses it well, same with pentatonics, Zakk uses it too but is much cleaner MUCH cleaner this guy could kick Kirk hammetts ass while playing the fade to black solo (which sucks balls)
Πολύ μιλάς συμπέθερε..
