Not unexpectedly, this one is getting a lot of down-votes. I think people think, by down voting videos like this, they'll get more of the woodworking videos instead. But the only thing they could achieve is getting fewer videos, because woodworking video take much more time to shoot.
Downvotes are probably all from members of PETL, People for the Ethical Treatment of Lawnmowers. The next video needs to be of the building of an all wood, drill motor powered tractor with a brushhog attachment.
Perhaps improving your lawnmower with some sort of wood attachment could have had a positive impact on the upvotes/downvotes ratio. At least I was expecting that, but I still upvoted the video, though, because I've never mowed grass and found it mildly interesting.
What they don't understand is that everyone needs to take some time out and have some fun. It looks like you had a blast. This video reminded me of when I was a kid and I would go to my aunt's house and mow her overgrown yard with a push mower.
What I expect next week; 'Last week, I found my mower wasn't working quite right. So I'm going to make a new one out of this old scrap oak, poppler, and an engine I found in a ditch on the side of the road'.
Chris Walden Oh yeah?? Well what about while I was raking I found the rim of a gigantic flying saucer that's been buried in my backyard since 1953? And what about I go have a look-see inside?? :)
To my astonishment, I sat and watched this whole destructive ballet... then sat here and wondered to myself - wtf? Did I really just sit and watch Matthias cut his grass?
When I was in college, some guy paid me to come over and mow a field with grass about twice as tall as that (albeit with a much larger tractor). He said "if we mow it down and then keep mowing it, it'll look like a lawn". I thought he was full of it, but by that time the next year, we were mowing it to 1/2 inch tall with a fairway mower set on its lowest setting and it looked like a golf fairway.
Does anyone else ever hit a piece of trash when mowing with hopes of it completely disappearing.... Yet find it just makes a big mess that you and up having to pick up later! lol!
WoodenCreationz I use cub cadets a lot and cut a huge field often. There’s always trash in it but at this point I hit the trash and just plow it everywhere.
This is one of the best videos I've seen in a long time! I live on a postage stamp and don't have the need for a riding lawnmower, never-mind a super destructo rig like that! I had a blast imagining that were me on that mower!
This may be pointing out the obvious but for under powered riding mowers you can mow very tall grass and weeds by making your passes such that they are not full cutting width. In other words, run the mower half in uncut grass and half over grass that is already cut. It takes twice as many passes but it reduces the power required by half.
And who knows what the hell is in there... once I hit a big ass rock and another time I almost destroyed a bees nest cutting through a customers tall grass! And Boi fix your lines
I actually really enjoyed your video, I was very impressed with how the mower made short work of so much long grass. I had to do a similar thing when I was landscaping for a guy over the summer holidays, I really enjoyed it and I made some money to help support myself this year. Just want to say you are an inspiration to me as a student studying engineering, I'm actually studying Software Engineering but I'm still allowed to have multiple interests, I hope. Anyway, thanks for being awesome and keep doing whatever it is you feel like, because if you are enthusiastic about it other people will enjoy it no matter what.
Quicker and more efficient to do it in rows or large circles (rather than just randomly). Particularly if you drive anticlockwise and the exhaust shoots over the cut lawn.
Matthias, you've got some crazy grass over there... even with a dull blade, some clumps had to be mowed repeatedly? I'd have taken out my flamethrower... if I had one :P This brings back memories of mowing the lawn with a petrol powered push mower. My dad made me do it. Ahh... memories. You never realize what you've got until you have it no more.
Is it strange that I've wanted to do something like this? In the area that I live in, the council seems to leave huge areas unmowed for years. All they do is mow around it. Very frustrating.
RandomMacFive Some times it's not council land, it can be privately owned, And they don't really care what happens to it. Like the place outside my house, gets rubbish thrown all around it with very tall grass, it's kind of sad really.
The right tool for the right job. Check the crank for excessive run-out at the blade connecting point. Something stopped the former blade. That's what shears the key at the flywheel end.
I got several good chuckles out of this; your video took me back to the farm shenanigans of my youth. Thanks for making my morning. More of this kind of thing is quite welcome. Naysayers be damned!
Brings back fond memories of the clearing of the same overgrowth on our former property in Pennsylvania. It was always enjoyable to clear brush and grass on the part of the lawn every fall. Thanks for the memory. As to the negative votes: some people need to get over themselves. I have always enjoyed the ragged edge that you bring to woodworking; creating jigs and tools to replace or enhance the woodworking process is why I subscribed in the first place. That same approach is reflected today in your yard work. I say "mow on!" Thank you for sharing another part of your life.
Man's triumph over nature. Few things are more thrilling. I have to say, it is just as much fun to watch a herd of goats denude the land in a day. Are there any goatherds in your region?
I love mowing super tall grass! I've only done it once, but I used a 6' wife mower attached to the back of a tractor, followed up by a little ride on mower! Fun video!
I have never found it to be a problem to just not watch any videos that don't interest me. I don't get the people that give it a thumbs down because it is not the content they want to see.
Yeah, well, I think it is more likely because of the fact that he is "destroying" natural things. Like, the wasp sucking video got a lot of downvotes as well. Sheesh, there are plenty wasps to go around! xD
I don't know if this is something you would be interested in trying but I saw a push mower with the metal along the front edge of the deck cut away and back from the edge so as to allow the blades to make contact with the grass before it can be bent over. I've never seen it in action but heard it works really for taking down even small saplings.
Nothing wrong with having fun and by the looks of it, you was having a blast. I'm in the process of building me another off road mower because I'm too cheap to buy a four wheeler and I get the tractors for free most of the time.
I don't know what's the most absurd : a genius filming while mowing his grass, or me watching a genius filming while mowing his grass. Monty Python's spirit inside.
Hahaha. Mathias you on the riding mower showed that grass who's boss. No pokemon hiding in the tall grass there any more. They either fled or surely succumbed to a quick and violent death bestowed to them by the blades of your beast mower. Video was awesome! MORE! Perhaps make an attachment that vacuums up the cuttings, mulches em up and disperse it over a wider area. Stihl made a hand held gas powered leaf blower, that also sucked up mulch, and leaves. It would then further mulch whatever it sucked up further and ever blow it out the leaf blower end either directly out or into a bag attachment it came with... OR into a big garbage can sized hopper maybe? And the vacuum end could be specially made out of plywood. Fitted on the part of the mower that shoots the grass out. Or behind the mower, whatever you think would work.
Given the title, I was half expecting you to run over a football-sized rock you couldn't see and there would be sparks flying everywhere, possibly with you running away in panic. Made for a pretty exiting watch :)
Funny I totally saw this video going different from the description. I thought the mower was going to blow up and you were going to build one completely out of wood lmao. this was actually entertaining to watch tho, and I could tell it wasn't that easy to shoot either, all the different angles and edits. I thank you for that. also that lawn mower is a BEASSTTT.
Matthias: Been there, done that. One thing to watch out for is the screen on top of the engine can become blocked with grass seed / mowing debris which can quickly lead to engine overheating as it blocks the cooling airflow for the engine. As these mowers don't have temperature gauges, the first sign of overheating is often strange noises coming from the engine which is too late. Keep up the good work! -Arlen
My life has no meaning. I just watched a video on mowing the lawn. Next week: watching paint dry. :-) (seriously, Matthias, that was strangely cathartic...)
I live in Australia on several acres, before my girls were old enough to leave home if I wanted to mow the grass I had to sneak out of the house and jump on the mower before they realized. I used it as a zone out time, not having to think about work at all. I enjoy wood work too but if you do it all the time sometimes you just need time out.
I like this video. I have an old Murry mower that I specially modified to do just what you are doing. I use it to mow our paths down through the woods and along the creek.
I can't help thinking this is a segue to a box jointed wooden lawn maintenance accessory. I actually found this video somewhat relaxing. The thumbs down hater's are going to hate, regardless of what you do. =Brian=

Downvotes are probably all from members of PETL, People for the Ethical Treatment of Lawnmowers. The next video needs to be of the building of an all wood, drill motor powered tractor with a brushhog attachment.
You should take down votes like up votes: information about people's desires. What you do with that information is a whole other matter.
Perhaps improving your lawnmower with some sort of wood attachment could have had a positive impact on the upvotes/downvotes ratio. At least I was expecting that, but I still upvoted the video, though, because I've never mowed grass and found it mildly interesting.
What they don't understand is that everyone needs to take some time out and have some fun.

sharpen your blands and also in grass that long cut it at a high setting then a low won and it will be as good as the lawn next door
Not at all woodworking.
I had so much fun mowing the tall grass, I made a video about it!
More here: woodgears.ca/misc/mower.html
Yeah, he is not quite in the pantorouter precision mode!
Talking about other things than woodworking, how did it go with the (plum?)tree you planted? did the deer cage work?
Essa brincadeira me parece ser bem divertida!!!rsrsrs
Not woodworking? It's all about the techniques of breaking the bonds of cellulose fibers to appropriate tolerances.
From reading the web article I noticed u possibly wanted to collect the grass. Maybe u could use the leaf collector as seen in a previous video
What I expect next week; 'Last week, I found my mower wasn't working quite right. So I'm going to make a new one out of this old scrap oak, poppler, and an engine I found in a ditch on the side of the road'.
Strangely interesting to watch. Gives me renewed optimism that my upcoming leaf-raking and wheel-barrowing video will do well!
Moohaha don't count on it!
Chris Walden
Oh yeah?? Well what about while I was raking I found the rim of a gigantic flying saucer that's been buried in my backyard since 1953? And what about I go have a look-see inside??
:)
Oddly enough, I'd probably watch that one as well. Already saw your crow-baring and shoveling segments sprinkled through your previous video series.
Well then that would change everything! This would also solve the advertising dilemma since you would have a few billion views...
DO IT! The only thing I missed in Wandels video was rock music soundtrack.
My conscious mind is telling me that this is boring, but my subconscious mind cannot resist a good lawn moving video.
To my astonishment, I sat and watched this whole destructive ballet... then sat here and wondered to myself - wtf? Did I really just sit and watch Matthias cut his grass?
For someone typically so precise & methodical in his approach, the shot of you mowing aimlessly (~1:00) was hilarious!
When I was in college, some guy paid me to come over and mow a field with grass about twice as tall as that (albeit with a much larger tractor). He said "if we mow it down and then keep mowing it, it'll look like a lawn". WoodenCreationz I use cub cadets a lot and cut a huge field often. There’s always trash in it but at this point I hit the trash and just plow it everywhere.
I ran over a newspaper once. It shredded it and blew the paper everywhere. It was no fun cleaning it up.
Every... single... time...
if you got a cater no problem if not
For some reason it just shoots out perfectly fine with me
You really gave RUclips's compression algorithm a workout!
I love how you just drove right into it instead of working in from the already cut area. Looked like you had fun with it.
And I thought my lawn was tall. You, Matthias Wandel get kudos from me for even attempting it.
if you scotch-tape a cotton-ball over the camera's mic port, it really cuts down on the wind noise.
And now with a simple new setup on the Pantamower we're in business!
This is one of the best videos I've seen in a long time! I live on a postage stamp and don't have the need for a riding lawnmower, never-mind a super destructo rig like that! I had a blast imagining that were me on that mower!

Wow, that old MTD Really Kicks Grass!!
I find it a very fun video to watch! Any time I can sit back with a cup of coffee and watch someone else mow is a GREAT moment to enjoy and savor!
1. Sharpen the blade,
2. drive in straight lines damnit!
Erik Pearson 😂😂😂
I was thinking the exact same thing.
And who knows what the hell is in there... once I hit a big ass rock and another time I almost destroyed a bees nest cutting through a customers tall grass!
And Boi fix your lines
Erik Pearson I mow in rows On an old CRAFSTMAN 12 hp OHV lawnrider
Fish Killl I mow in rows on first gear in rabbit mode which it goes 0.5Mph if theres tall grass
I cut grass for a living and this brought a tear to my eye.
I love your videos so much, that I just watched you cut grass. You looked like you were having fun, and that is what life is all about. Good for you!
The best part about this cinematic essay on lawnmowing is how many people are getting angry over it, which makes it that much more entertaining.
I actually really enjoyed your video, I was very impressed with how the mower made short work of so much long grass. I had to do a similar thing when I was landscaping for a guy over the summer holidays, I really enjoyed it and I made some money to help support myself this year.

Some areas are preserved as Natural Prairies around me. but they usually have signage up.
Peter O'Brien This.
Mowing grass is good for people, and bad for everything else.
Peter O'Brien Not a single sign in sight.
Prairie looks beautiful. Why would you want to waste time and petrochemicals replacing it with mowed grass if no one is going to use the space?
RandomMacFive Some times it's not council land, it can be privately owned, And they don't really care what happens to it. Like the place outside my house, gets rubbish thrown all around it with very tall grass, it's kind of sad really.

riding mowers are one of my favorite things!
That reminds me, I need to not mow the yard for months on end. I keep forgetting to do that.
That was amazingly cathartic to watch! Thanks.

Thumbs up but only because it only took a few seconds to make me appreciate our 38hp diesel and pto driven mower.
Thanks for sharing the countryside.
I love mowing super tall grass! I've only done it once, but I used a 6' wife mower attached to the back of a tractor, followed up by a little ride on mower! Fun video!
Is it weird that I love watching people mow? I could do it all day. I really like those forestry mulcher videos.
HAHAHA Matthias!! You just got 30k+ people to watch you mow your lawn! I'm proud of what you have done here my friend.
I have never found it to be a problem to just not watch any videos that don't interest me. I don't get the people that give it a thumbs down because it is not the content they want to see.
I have never understood people that make this argument.
What do you think the thumbs down is for, exactly?
Yeah, well, I think it is more likely because of the fact that he is "destroying" natural things. Like, the wasp sucking video got a lot of downvotes as well. Sheesh, there are plenty wasps to go around! xD

ronwc64 Have been thinking of modifying a pushmower for that. But I'd rather mow with the tractor, and those aren't as disposable to just do that to.
Nothing wrong with having fun and by the looks of it, you was having a blast.
I'm in the process of building me another off road mower because I'm too cheap to buy a four wheeler and I get the tractors for free most of the time.
I agree, mowing is highly underrated. For a process that is loud, with the risk of dismemberment, I find it almost hypnotic if not cathartic.
Looks like fun Matthias! shame I haven't got enough lawn to even warrant a push mower ha!ha!
You had fun, and that is all that matters. I like mowing tall grass as well.
Reminds me of my Grandpa's farm - much happier times. Thanks for this one, Matthias - ignore the haters!
This is so satisfying. You are awesome, Matthias
Looks like fun. I like your Lawnmower Test Track. Almost got my hay fever to act up. Thanks for sharing.
I don't know what's the most absurd : a genius filming while mowing his grass, or me watching a genius filming while mowing his grass. Monty Python's spirit inside.

Canada - watch out, Matthias is riding ! Looks like you have fun Matze . :)
wheres the benny hill music
Given the title, I was half expecting you to run over a football-sized rock you couldn't see and there would be sparks flying everywhere, possibly with you running away in panic.
Made for a pretty exiting watch :)
I'm curious how many stones you hit going through that field?
pestr999 none
Love it !
nice, he must be bored of something....
I liked the camera angles! I think for next season you should put a wooden supercharger on the mower. Thanks for all the good and fun videos!
i have never seen a ride on mower perform that well jeez...
nice vid!!
Nothing more satisfying than a good mow session! Very therapeutic ...
I love mowing. What a beast of a mower too!
Who would dislike this? This is so satisfying
that looked really satifying to mow
Matthias: Been there, done that. -Arlen
arlen raasch Thanks for the reminder. I will have to check that!
Needs evil maniacal laughter as you destroy those defenceless grass blades.
My life has no meaning. I just watched a video on mowing the lawn. Next week: watching paint dry. :-)
(seriously, Matthias, that was strangely cathartic...)
Good effort on making this video, good work!
I truthfully dont mind to see a bit of what you do but I do personally like the wood working videos
keep em coming! !
I like this video. I have an old Murry mower that I specially modified to do just what you are doing. I use it to mow our paths down through the woods and along the creek.
Nice dude what kind of mowers is that it looks like a true value riding mower is it?
That thing looks so much fun to use. :)
I like it too. You sure are having fun.
looks fun!, were you planning on doing anything with that area you trimmed down?
Oh dear! He's finally lost the plot. I think he must have been sniffing the wood glue.
I can't help thinking this is a segue to a box jointed wooden lawn maintenance accessory.
I actually found this video somewhat relaxing.
The thumbs down hater's are going to hate, regardless of what you do.
=Brian=
Well, that looks like fun!
Don't listen to the haters Matthias. But you gotta play "Flight of the Valkyrie" with a title like that!
+Simon White if I did, then whoever owns the copyright on that music get paid, not me.
Damm that looked like alot of fun
This looks ooooh so satisfying !
It seems your mower blade's are blunt or not sharp is it supposed to mulch as you cutting the grass?
I like how you can replace the audio in this video with any song and it makes a great music video. Entertainment for hours.
For a moment I thought I was going to build a wooden tractor and improve cutting. Greetings from Chile
For someone as detail oriented as you, I am shocked to see such a lack of pattern
This looks soo fun!
underrated... if i had a ride-on (especially one that performed as well as yours) I'd probably enjoy it more.
I had to mow some tall grass when I first moved out to the country, it was slow going but lots of fun!
Almost stalled out the engine a few times hehe... I did mine with a beer though, but that's not recommended because the beer was flat before I got half way down haha
Mowing is a form of mindless relaxation....something we all need to stay creative.
Loved it! Made me smile. Thanks!
That is a pretty beast mower:)
Is their a minimum hp for this type of mowing ? Will a 20 hp full press lubed engine overheat?
And the point of moving long areas of vegetation was what exactly, seemed a bit unnecessary ?
Man! Where to begin? The mower apparently doesn't have the seat safety switch OR it's been disconnected! It sounded like the mower was left running while clearing a plugged chute. If safety glasses were used, there were no side shields. Operating mower with dull blades.
Nay...I never sharpen my blades, I exchange them for new ones when the machine quits cutting (unlike my saw blades). Safetey glasses are for touchy-feely wimps when cutting grass. I cut the chute guard off of my mower...I also never bag cut grass because I like the mulching effect. Removing the seat safety switch was the first repair I did on my mower...before it cut its first blade of grass!
And, yeah! I love your woodworking videos, but I liked this one too--by confession AND by YT Like button!
What was it they said in Jurassic Park: The Lost World?
"Don't go into the long grass!"
I couldn't help but keep imagining tiny raptors.
how does your mower not bog down or have belt slippage/the blades stop when you mow that tall?
It does slip, I have to slow down sometimes
you really know you have an audience when you get this many views from mowing weeds. I watched and waited for that quirky humor.
My allergies started bothering me just watching!
Hi Matthias,
I've been following you for some time now and have enjoyed all your projects. But what I miss is your software programs.
Do you have any new software developments in the works?
Jerry
Many years ago I used one of these to maintain the lawns at a holiday Lodge where I was caretaker in Scotland. Hours of fun. I even used it with a broken leg for a while with a pot on. No brakes! WEHEY!
