I’ve grown monstera for almost 40 years as a tropical indoors. To get a fruit from it is a dream! The aerial roots should not damage the host tree. They are only stabilizers. I’d agree fertilizing the ground is vital. Looking forward to ordering a fruit from you next year!
Love this fruit, been eating it since I was a kid, have 6 I'm waiting on right now, but still not ready in Nov. And yes, pineapple and banana is the flavor, with just a tinge of fiberglass.
I'm glad you acknowledged the snake thing Tom. I was sweating bullets watching you go into the depths of a Monstera! Buy yourself some 'leg gaiters'. I won't go into our yard without them on. (Mind you, we have some pretty nasty bitey ones here in Australia.)
He has some very nice mature looking Monstera deliciosa vines. If you get a chance to stop by his farm again when Monstera deliciosa fruit in season, then ask him for mature fruit then the one you got or even better with a true vine ripen fruit. A true ripen correctly fruit has more intense tropical fruit tastes than just banana; pineapple ...+ wonderful fragrance. One of my top picks for growing tropical fruit here in San Jose ,CA Zone 9.
I am growing 5 Monstera Deliciosa plants in a forrest in Florida Zone 9a. None are thriving, but all have survived. One was about 2.5 feet tall, another was 1 foot tall, and 3 were about 4 inches tall. All developed a fungal leaf spot, but like I said none died. The new leaves emerge healthy, but get fungal spots within a month or so between May and Aulgust, when it was 100 degrees and humid. Slight recovery September to November, but slow growth & no fruit. Plants purchased from 3 different vendors, and all evolved similarly.
I had no idea that Monstera Deliciosa is edible. I thought that was a flower buds. I've been cutting it off every year and throwing it away because the bush keeps getting bigger every year and I am trying to keep the bush under control. Thank you for educating me. Now I know is edible. 😆Growing in zone 8b/9a Paso Robles Ca.
Most fruit bearing trees and plants respond to stress which causes fruiting because the plant thinks its in trouble and needs to fruit to have offspring to survive. Cutting back on watering and a little excess Sun might stress it into fruiting.
I mentioned this to Tom; growing up in Mozambique, (Portuguese Colony) a lady had Monstera Delisiosa. However, we thought it was poisonous because no one knew that there is a very short window of when it was safe to eat it. Nowadays there are probably thousands of them and people are killing the plants, believing that it’s poisonous.
they like some shade. I just take cuttings and dig a shallow hole and put some fertilizer down. but down here in South Florida you can take a 12 inch segment and throw it on the ground and forget about it and it will grow
Depend on the condition of the plant. If you get the one at nursery where they grow them in protection of a greenhouse/shade to be sold as houseplant, then it can get sun burn or even dieback when you plant it under strong natural sunlight. This plant can be in shade / bright shade /half day sun/ filter sun. In some tropical locations with lot of humidity it can grow in full sun, but its leaf turns more of light-yellow color or get some sunburn. The right amount of sunlight would help with fruit production better, than the one in full shade. You can propagate it by cutting. The less stress way is better if you like it to fruit soon. When the cutting gets stress or even the plant get stress, then the new growth would set back to its younger age.
Monstera is not really a choice edible fruit. Like a crappy banana with a low grade pineapple. They are beautiful in the landscape if kept under control. I have some 50 year old plants and they always have fruits but not worth the risk of eating them.
Any chance would you upload video your 50 years old Monstera vines. We love to learn more about them. Hope you got the right variety and harvest the fruit at the right time.
Closest thing to hell on earth feeling was when I tried an unripe monstera delisiosa. I would run to the other side of the road if ever come across one. I am talking about biting into a minute amount left me in agony for many many hours. Please please stay away from it.

This fruit name sounds like a magic spell from Harry Potter 🤣
P-Diddy's favorite fruit.
This is more of a question for Tom but anyone can reply....Do the monsteras prefer sunlight or shade? Also, how are they propagated?

It isn’t about keeping away from it. It’s about eating it when ripe 🙄
Hate that you’re killing the avocado trees though 😢😢😢
