We are a Christian society. You’re swearing an oath to the King, who is defender of the faith.
To put it simply, many moons ago, all the tribes and clans of the British isles fought each other for domination. The exasperated church stepped in, and said stop fighting, and called a big pow wow of all the tribal representatives at a place called Westminster, and proclaimed, “ Here is a King that represents us all”. He was anointed and ceremoniously crowned.
King Charles III is the 40th monarch from that meeting at Westminster.
Ps The royal line was only ever broken when Cromwell declared himself lord protector, after a civil war with parliament and England became the worlds first modern republic.
