    I was hoping for some elaboration on the "insidious" atmosphere since "tainted" seemed to cover most things that spring to mind.

    • @SSkorkowsky
      @SSkorkowsky  3 года назад +26

      Sure. Insidious is going to be a super nasty atmosphere. It's very similar to a Corrosive one, but also destroys equipment as well.
      For example, if you look at the map where New Home is, to the left and above is a planet called Sturgeon's Law that has an Insidious atmosphere. That planet has this moss that quickly eats through metal and biological matter, and the air is full of spores. So ships or people landing there will get these spores on them that quickly start eating holes in their suits or hulls. So it's not a Corrosive atmosphere, like acid, but some awful flesh-eating plant on a very green moss-covered world.

    What I really like about this mechanic(?) is that it can say a lot about a particular system. Any scale has its default as the assumed or perceived default, so an authoritarian system may have its scale starting at 5 when its really at 10. Additionally, it has a very political angle GMs can exploit to gently tell players the geopolitical or astropolitical affairs without beating the players over the head with it in some lore bible

    Speaking of Exceptions in Law Level, and Tech Level, just about every episode of Firefly revolves around a starship crew figuring out ways to circumvent the levels or combat the main exceptions to the levels on the planet. I'm sitting here racking my brain for examples of tech and law level exceptions in shows like Farscape, Star Gate, and Star Trek, and I just can't think of any.

    Hopefully not wearing *just* space capes.
    Also as a small correction, most of the X-Boat network is "only" Jump-4 (and most Travellers will be on a ship with at best Jump-2). There are a few routes in Imperial core with Jump-6 deliveries, but most are slower.

    • @richmcgee434
      @richmcgee434 3 года назад

      "Just space capes" reminds me of the old Larry Niven short story "Cloak of Anarchy" where one of the characters (never named, IIRC) is an otherwise naked woman who's wearing a cape that somehow levitates behind her forming a striking airborne train that follows her as she walks. The outfit evokes quite a bit of comment and discussion since it's a new trick the main characters haven't seen before, and doesn't seem practical - you have to keep moving all the time or the effect is spoiled. She's wearing it in a "Free Park" - essentially anarchic entertainment zone where the police are hands off unless things get violent and otherwise anything goes - and when the copseye security drones get knocked out and everyone's locked in without power for the night she's the first victim of the resulting havoc when someone steals her cloak by tearing it off her - which draws blood from the contact points, so really not practical.
      An unpleasant little story about how fast recreational faux-anarchy turns to violence when the limiters are removed.
      And yeah, the Imperium never did get to universal deployment of the J6 X-Boat net. Even J4 routes don't go everywhere, and anything off the communication mains is likely being routed by merchant couriers at J2 or J3 if you're lucky. Irregular J1 or J2 if you're really in a backwater.

      Long story about how the sector was populated, but essentially way back in the 21st Century, a trio of generation ships were launched at sublight speeds out into the galaxy. After a few centuries, they landed in the Old Islands and began populating it. Fast Forward a couple thousand more years and the Imperium stumbles across these two subsectors of worlds isolated in the Reft and they are all descended from the three Earth colony ships that everyone forgot about. Neubayern was colonized by the ship that was primarily German, Austrian, and East European. One of the big appeals for me in running these sectors (The Old Islands and the New Islands) is they still have these traces of culture left over from Earth, but also weirdly reinterpreted by thousands of years of separation.

    Ironsworn:Starforged settlements makes a great system for building out 'exceptions' to the UWP in a hex.
    You can roll up 1d6 settlements and sprinkle them into the star system within that hex. Might just be an orbital or deep space research team, but maybe they need help with something. Or theres an industrial settlement with a couple of 100k population, but the settlements rulership is despotic in a high law level technocratic planet. Then the player characters could be hired to expose the working conditions in that company town (either by a news corporation or by a rival tech company).
    The tension that exists between the status quo (UWP) and the Starforged settlements can really spark off some adventure hooks without too much mental energy on the part of the GM.

      Doing an Expanse-like setting would be pretty easy. Drop it down to Tech Level 9 without Jump. Remove non-human species and gravity technology (this also removes flying cars along with ship gravity). That's pretty much it. Maybe fidget around with some of the alternate thrust options in Highguard, like chemical rockets.
      There is a Traveller setting called 2300AD that is a lot like that. I haven't read it, but from what I've gathered, it has a lot of similarities to The Expanse. So it might be worth checking out to see how well that fits with what you're wanting.

      In addition to 2300 AD that Seth mentioned there is
      · A campaign called Beltstrike released for Mongoose 1st ed that's set in a tech level 9:ish system

      (Cepheus Engine is an open variation of the Traveller rules which is available online for free i.4pcdn.org/tg/1472219595188.pdf)

It's pretty good, notably for the extra success spends, but each one ultimately depends on quantity of content for me. Fortunately the Expanse version has a decent amount. Not sure I'd say the same for some of the others using the system, though. Dragon Age RPG consolidated core book is pretty good but I don't think there were many monsters in it, for example. As always a great video.
    I view Law and Tech level as an average rather than cut in stone. The Law level in London is higher than rural Texas. Equally the Tech level of Mayberry NC is lower than Langley VA.
    Planet populations, I use the Spinward Marches map. Many planets have very low populations. (The highest has a population the size of China. Pretty large unless it's spread out over a whole planet.) Instead of spreading them out I concentrate them into a small region. Similar to the early United States. This allows for Mountain Men homesteaders and the like.
    Now my question:
    After about the third or fourth planet, my creativity starts to drop off. Especially if the players are planet hoping. Do you have any advice on this?

    • @nanowasabi4421
      @nanowasabi4421 3 года назад

      I haven't played any Traveller, but DnD 5e encourages DMs to roll on tables to randomly generate dungeons and towns, and if you get two outcomes that seem to contradict each other, thinking of some way for it to make sense will usually make a pretty unique outcome. In Traveller, one possible way I could see this going is if you roll a very high tech level but a very low starport quality, you could decide that the inhabitants of the planet see space travel as a necessary evil for some reason.
      Also, if your players aren't avid Sci-Fi readers (though they might be, considering they're playing Traveller) there's a whole treasure trove of ideas in series like Ringworld, Old Man's War, and even Hitchhiker's Guide.

      @@nanowasabi4421 This is mostly about me complaining about my own lack of creativity. After visiting two or three new planets I'm tapped as to what makes this particular planet unique.

      I feel that. Creativity is a fickle beast.
      It might feel counterintuitive, but coming up with ideas is, in my experience, a skill that can be improved with practice. I compose music, and when I do a lot of composing, instead of running my idea well dry, it seems like the more I compose the easier it is to come up with ideas. When it comes to TTRPGs, my preferred solution is just to not be creative. My players will never know the difference between a town I randomly generated and a town I came up with from scratch.
      Truck drivers never spend enough time in one town to know what actually makes it unique. Of course, in order to truly know a town, you have to spend a few years there, but if you spent a month in every town you visited instead of a few hours, you’d find something interesting in a lot of them. This gets to your issue with planet hopping. If travellers visit 5 planets over the course of 2 sessions, then even if you’ve made each planet unique, your players might not notice. A party stopping to pick up a package isn’t likely to encounter your antimatter black market unless you railroad them into it.
      The way I see it, if you have a planet hopping adventure, then the focus isn’t really on the planets themselves, but rather on the characters and events. The planets might start to blend together, but that’s okay if the travellers’ allies, enemies, and ship are interesting. Heck, I can count the number of unique Star Trek planets I remember on one hand. The star of the show is the Enterprise. And if your players complain about the planets not being unique, you can get their ship stolen or broken down and force them to actually spend some time somewhere.

The players are very demanding. "More! More! We're still not satisfied."
      There are times I fall back on the traditional TV planetary types:
      Southern California (Star Trek)
      British Columbia (Star Gate)
      A British gravel pit (Dr. Who)
      North African desert (Star Wars)

      The only "extra" books apart from the core rules you would probably want are "High Guard" (which has extra stuff on spaceships) and possibly the "Central Supply Catalogue" (which has extra equipment) - most of the rest of the books just deal with the "official" universe. But there's nothing to stop you from running an adventure on a planet without using just the info given in the core books - it's perfectly possible to build a world using the core books and populate it according to your imagination, or you could suggest that your world is the second or third planet within the solar system of a listed planet from the Official Traveller Universe ("the OTU") - the main world may be a high tech haven populated by a few billion religious followers of Elon Musk, while the world you have made for your adventure might have a few hundred miners in a rough and ready corporate settlement that is stuttering along on the cusp of failure. Your first adventures might start by simply hunting down a spare part to keep the atmospheric generator running, then be recruited to help a revolution against "the corporation" running the planet - that might bring your group into contact with some mercenaries who help you get off planet when the revolution fails....and so on.

What if there's a system that was marked as amber by the galactic commission on planetary safety (or however planets get marked as amber) but it turns out the GCPS was bribed by a trade rival so that merchants are discouraged from trading with the competition? What if the players arrive on a planet that was marked a certain law level but when they try to go through security they're stopped for something that's usually legal? The antagonist might have control over the security checkpoint, enabling them to target the players and make them underequipped. What if a planet is miscataloged as an oceanic world when it actually has no water at all, potentially leaving the players without a good source of fuel?

      Probably super restrictive and punitive law systems, where the list of things you *can* do is vastly smaller than the list of things you can't.

    Two of the issues I have with planet generation are (one) the Population on the average is 5 or an average city. At the highest levels, the population is that of China, which sounds crowded until you spread it out over an entire world. Also the Tech level tends toward 7 or Earth in the 1970s. This is not the Buck Rodgers/Star Trek universe I had imagined.
    My work around is that in the Spinward Marches (where my game is set) they are still getting over the Long Night. Planets can be seen as the equivelent of colonies in very early America. They look forward to visiting starships.
    Another work around is simply add 2 to the numbers. Or (and I'm still working on this) make the population number some sort of percentage rather than a hard number.
