typically in these types of videos on other channels I have to skip through the video past the boring 'talking to the camera about nothing to fill time' parts, but these videos are wonderfully put together and easy to watch. Excellent content
@@DirtLifestyle Montana overlander here. Slush can suck for sure. Solid ice, I mean 1 inch hard solid ice is some deadly stuff. I almost went over on blue mountain near Missoula and its no joke, I had 1 tire over the edge. I am glad I wore my brown pants that day.
I agree! Let the little guy work.... make him a part and it'll do him so much good! I remember when I was a youngster I just wanted to do everything my dad was doing.
The opening statement is the most true thing I have ever heard about camping in the PNW. Spent some time in Sweden and they have a saying "there is no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing choice" so true for here.
Having Chris along adds something special for us who's kids are in other states. It brings back great memories. I have a picture of my friends kids and mine on the front of my early bronco in Moab on one of our many trips that brings a smile to my face every time I think about it. Thanks
Love the PNW . Growing up there and being active in Boy Scouts in addition to living in the boondocks gives you an appreciation of good equipment. Literally the difference between being miserable and having a great time.
adapting and overcoming to find the enjoyment out of the circumstances is truly the difference between that being a miserable night and it being an adventure
Did gokart racing with my dad from 4-15 with my dad and the most important lesson I/we got out of it, other than driving related, was the ability to deal with being out in bad weather. The track we went to was in a valley and seemed to make up its own weather. Racing in November in the rain At 8 years old while winning my local kart championship taught me to love bad weather. There’s no bad weather only bad clothing. Also racing in the rain is the most fun experience of my life.
snow camping is my absolute favorite. forest is quiet... most people are home... you do have to work for it but it's absolutely epic. i usually have 1 or 2 snow trips in already but it's so dry here this year it just finally started snowing in Colorado.
Great video. I love winter camping in Washington, there is nothing more miserable than 35 and rainy. We were camping in November between Adams and St. Helen's when all of the rain hit.
What an epic trip!! When Edwin started sliding - wow.. Crazy the difference the approach angle and line can truly make (and ofcourse great spotting!!) Nicely done
So glad you guys are pushing your comfort zones. Remember, tire chains, winter tires and tire studs are your friends. When crossing those sketchy side slopes, hook up your vehicles with winch cable recovery straps etc making sure at least two vehicles stabilized to one crossing. It could save your life. As it gets later in season and avalanche danger is high plan accordingly. We had an avalanche take out a disco on route two west side of Stevens Pass. Everyone survived even though the disco took a few hundred foot scoot downslope. Get some fat wood and have everyone bring a little dry firewood in each vehicle. Get yourselves a good fire reflecting shield or even a collapsing wood stove. Your edits are getting really good brother.
My truck did better than I thought it would, and funny thing is at the end when we all topped off with fuel I used the least amount of fuel, it was definitely a fun trip although I would like less rain next time
LOL, when you guys broke the shovels out there was no questions about the level of dedication. I love the mindset of not letting a little physical labor get in the way of you and your goal.
LOVE winter camping! Great that you showed the good and the bad - like sitting under a tarp weighed down by wet snow or rain. Also good to remember that your feet will be inside snow and ice covered boots; very cold. I wear crampons around camp so I won’t fall when the snow around camp packs to ice! In remote areas, even paved roads become treacherous. But camping in a silent, snowy forest with no bugs - wonderful!
Thanks for watching the video folks! These are tough to make, especially with kiddos along for the ride lol. And if you like overland camping make sure you check out my buddy Edward Shin's RUclips channel. He is WAAAAAAY UNDERRATED! ruclips.net/user/KrokemOutdoors
Hey man. I’m headed up to snowqualmie in about 20 min. If you do another overnighter with your kid let me know. My daughter would love other kids to go snow camping with.
I'm a winter person love camping in the winter love taking my son he's older but man it don't get any better then watching your kids put things you taught them to use
Epic, always love seeing you get out there with folks like Edward. Throwing a video idea here - maybe a tips/tricks/gear that make adventures like this with the kiddos easier for you?
Great video Nate. Watched after an epic snow wheeling trip in TSF in OR. I spent a couple seasons in the barracks across from the elk at the end of your video when I was on trail crew. Something to check out is High Rock Lookout in those parts, amazing building and view.
I love the rain, and I love the snow and cold. What I don't like is the combo of those things, when it's just above freezing, still cold with melting snow around you and it's raining.
Oh man. That slide. Hey I’m a California guy and we wheel in the snow. That reminded me of a slide a took down a mountain trail for about 200 feet. Totally locked up with no steering. I just aimed the wheels toward the mountain and prayed. Over the edge was a 200 foot drop off. Had my pregnant wife and two friends in the XJ. Thank God it was on a straight section of trail and it leveled out and we came to a stop about 10 feet in front of a truck wanting to go up. I CRAWLED the rest of the way down in 4 lo. That got my adrenaline pumping. I don’t think my passengers knew how close that was. CHAINS. I’ll never go off-roading in the ice or snow without chains now. Learned my lesson.
I love it. It's exactly the philosophy I have raising my kids. Introduce a bit of (controlled) chaos in order to build resilience and problem solving. We take our very little ones on backpacking and off-roading adventures like this, too. Happy to see that you all had a great time. Cheers, Nate and Chris. I hope to see more adventures with you and your family.
Nate the point you made about being in the snow reminds me when I used to go to the desert in California in my younger years. We would show up with very high winds, 6 foot tall fire blowing sideways wearing goggles drinking a beer, just happy not to be at home. Watching people leaving because they don't like the wind.So the point is make what you can out of the adventure & make some memories. Great shot of Edwards new truck almost going off the cliff. I bet he got his heart a pumping in that moment .
Nate, hands down the best off-road content on the internet. Love the how to videos, but your adventure vids are incredible. I know how much work goes into making something like that. Keep up the good work!
Absolutely loved the video, you all did great! For me personally was being able to see that full size Chevy in action. As I have one myself and now I will be looking forward to doing the same. Keep those great memories rolling! 🙌🏼
Yep, we've never stopped Overlanding, even with the kids who are now 5, 4, and 2, but all of them have been camping and overlanding since they were a newborn (the oldest was camping @ 3 months). So it is a part of their lives. I will say for us, moving from a ground tent to a huge RTT was a game changer for overlanding with kids. All 5 of us sleep in the RTT.
I always can't wait to see you're videos every week!!! And with your overland trailer, it has been spot one with the way I have been trying to build mine, even down to the Harbor Freight trailer frame. Keep up the amazing work!! I'm just on the other side of the mountain from you, and would love to take my wife and daughter on a wheeling trip with you guys if there is a spot for us to go along!!
It's easier to camp when it's below freezing, so that everything isn't just wet all the time so yeah, a lot more work when it's just around those temperatures you're having on that trip. But still a lot of good times can be had 👍 I'm not yet going on camping with my family, because our daughter is just below 3 years old and minus 20 celcius would mean a lot of extra work to prevent her having frost bites 😬 So we'll wait a bit. But I'm certainly looking forward going on the camping trips with my family. My wife haven't been into camping that much, but she'll learn 😅
Ive taken my son snow camping since he was two years old. I took him on Christmas one year and he opened his presents in the tent with the tent open with a snowy view.
Great video nate! Have to say the filming of this is top notch and what an adventure! I have a 4 year old daughter I’d love to get her out in the outdoors with me.
That's the way to do it! If the trail doesn't fit, you fit the trail... Definitely need to have shovels and man power on this kind of road... Especially in that kind of weather. Looks like so much fun. I was on a trail last year and it got so narrow there was just no place to turn around anywhere. We had to get out the tools and make us a spot... I actually enjoyed it though.
The mountains Western NC is nearing 70 degrees this week so snow is a long ways off. Thanks for allowing us to come along on your snow trip. How about a walk around of the FJ!
What a great experience!!!!! I miss my montana camping days. One time I got stuck in Idaho and I couldn't turn around. And I was pulling a trailer. Love this and taking your son is great.
Beautiful country, and great video. I’m in Northern NM, 6000ft. Spend lots of time little more north and in southern Colorado. Specifically around Silverton. We run trucks and built utv’s. People need to understand that snowy conditions in some terrains can be absolutely deadly. Be safe out there!
Hey what’s up bro…I take my kids off-roading overlanding all the time, great to see that. I know that exact gas station in Packwood you guys ended your video in off FR-52 Skate Creek. We just got back from Snoqualmie pass today looking to explore some new areas and everything was snowed in and closed….it was an awesome trip though. Great content, awesome to see PNW’ers doing our thing.
Love the family stuff man!! So good! Love the lessons your trying to teach your son. I definitely need to be doing more of this with my daughter! Thanks for the inspiration!
Great drone footage! Keep getting that young man out there to enjoy and to learn. My 21 year old son went with me dang near every time I went out. Converted the Grand Cherokee to a camper and we would head out for two or three weeks at a time, (I had a lot of vacation time saved up). San Bernardino Mountains, San Jacinto Mountains, Los Padres National Forest and now where I live: The Sequoia National Forest 20 minutes from the Giant Sequoia Trees at the famous "Trail of a Hundred Giants"
Thumbs up all around 👍😀 Great vidio, it's real man, doesn't get any more fun,!! The huge smile on your four year old! Epic, he will remember that for ever. Thank for keepin it real. 👍❄🤏 🇨🇦 😎 😛.
It's all about the experiences Nate, my kid is 13 now and he remembers all the nonsensical things I dragged him out to do when he was little. I keep not one but two sets of tire chains in my Explorer. It's bone stock but when I have all four tires chained up I can pretty much run with anyone out in that slick stuff. I almost never use them but would not even consider going out in the Colorado mountains with having them for insurance. Nobody but truckers use them around here these days, the highway dept keeps the roads plowed....when I was a kid, tire chains were standard equipment around these parts.
My heart skipped a beat watching Edward getting close to the edge. Never rolled off a cliff but did slide to the edge. Got a couple grey hairs that day. Be calm, think problem out, work till desired solution and have a winch and don't go out by yourself.
Damn seeing the Elk I thought you started in Packwood. I have in the passed use chains on my F350 because the back was so light it always slid. Yeah more of Chris , I miss seeing the little guy on my dog walks.
I love the Chris cam footage. The videography and editing you do are top notch and really set your channel apart. Thanks for doing this channel it is one of my favorite by far. One day I would like to get to a place with my Jeep that I would feel confident that I could at least keep up with you on a trip.
Great adventure content that is worth sharing with everyone in my family. Great job while training the next camera man, fabricator , wheeling buddy. Keep living the dream.
Awesome video Nate! I am jealous of your scenery, maybe one day I'll make it to the west coast. My son is coming close to 4 weeks old, I'm excited to eventually bring him on adventures with me.
I wished that I lived closer. That really looks like some amazing Territory out there. Watching from Elkview WV. That’s really great that you are taking your son out with you. I have twin daughters that are 15, and they have been wheeling with me since they were 7. Awesome video.
I need to know that song you used when you all were sitting around the campfire and did awesome cinematography with the rain. Pleeeease. You put wo much work into your edits and videos that part hit me right in the nostalgia. Good job on not just family time but Making memories that subconsciously last forever.
We live in the same vicinity and I've seen/wheeled many of the local stuff in your vids. I love snow wheeling! That said...If there's even a hint of winter weather I carry a full set of tire chains. I've also slid over "the edge". I really enjoy your content. It's fun to watch other experiences, so I can gain some more knowledge and/or wisdom. Even in my early 50s there's something new to learn.
Great video! I’ve honestly had so many bad experiences in the snow I’ve avoided it like crazy. I’m determined this winter to get out of my comfort zone though cause I really want some snow camping
Thank you for sharing, I love your content. I’m a complete newby to off-roading and last year purchased a stock 2019 Tacoma OR. I have this burning desire to take my girls winter camping but also have a mad respect for what the great outdoors can challenge you with. I live in Colorado Springs, CO and would love to hook up with some seasoned folks who could help show me the ropes to help my desire come to reality. If you have any guidance or knowledge of groups, people in my area it would be much appreciated! If not, no worries but thanks again for the awesome content!
First time I winter camped was in the back of my truck with a tarp draped over on a piece of plywood with a 1/2 inch foam pad and a tarp at -16°C (3°F) with a -15°C rated sleeping bag. Was wearing a Hoodie and sweatpants inside the sleeping bag but that was a very cold morning. Then I bought a rooftop tent, a cheap diesel heater and a CO detector.
typically in these types of videos on other channels I have to skip through the video past the boring 'talking to the camera about nothing to fill time' parts, but these videos are wonderfully put together and easy to watch. Excellent content
Thank you very much 🙏 that means alot
Same here. Great job.

Hi
❤ this!

Awesome....Chris is a lucky guy to have a good Dad that takes him out
What a huge compliment, thank you 👊

You put wo much work into your edits and videos that part hit me right in the nostalgia. Good job on not just family time but Making memories that subconsciously last forever.

Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
My friends and I call it #miserycamping. It's the best. You never remember the camping trips where everything goes well.
Your videography/editing/music is getting so dialled.
Love the content mate!
Great video! I’ve honestly had so many bad experiences in the snow I’ve avoided it like crazy. I’m determined this winter to get out of my comfort zone though cause I really want some snow camping
I need to get my Disco set up more like yours with a good roof rack.
I remember all the backpacking trips I did up there in the cascades back in the Boy Scouts. very envious!
Love winter camping! I've got some dope spots here in CO if you ever make it out here
Thank you for sharing, I love your content.
Beautiful filming in this one! We need a rig walk around on Dave's Toyota please.
Thank you! Maybe one day 👍
I second that, I was hoping for a quick walk around the 40.
Wow it's crazy to see you guys searching for snow. Here in Fairbanks, Alaska we've had a constant snow cover since late September.
Maybe I'm just more......outdoorsy, but this looks like an enjoyable situation to me. Beautiful scenery, fun wheeling, good friends....... 👍👍
Nice vid. We only dream about seeing snow like that in the deep south ...
That's amazing. Wish we got snow more than once a decade in Eastern Oklahoma
1:20 Nothing beats dad carrying you like a sack of potatoes.
Lol
great video and great concept! Would love to get my 5 year old out there like this as well. Thanks for the inspiration.
