i left a chevy dealer 8 years ago for an independent chain. best decision i made. yes it was overwhelming, first year i spent almost 30 thousand in tools just to work on everything, sometimes it sucks on newer vehicles, not having the specialty tools, service info or programming capabilities, but we move forward. and not having to work flat rate is a huge bonus. after a few health things and a different shop, i'm back at the original one i went to after the dealer, have been back for over 2 years, and i'm here to stay. not sure what i have in tools and boxes but i'm well over $150k, that's canadian though. when i was at the dealer i had about $10k in tools and boxes and had everything i needed as the dealer had all the specialty stuff.
lol Spent decades in marine and snowmobile repair shops. Went the same way. Matco box and tools along with snap-on etc. about 60k worth. Then got my sanity back n went with simple Craftsman tools so the family could live in a nicer home and eat better food hehe... What did I learn? Matco n snap-on overcharge by 80 plus percent. The tools that broke most often? Snap-on, followed closely by matco.... Tools that lasted the longest by far.. many times triple or more..... simple Craftsman...and at roughly 1/4th the price. Still have Craftsman tools from my grandpa over 50 years ago. So... yup... great tools all... but for you just starting... don't fall in debt to those trucks and lose tens of thousands u didn't need to go into debt for. Love the trucks but man.... they get their hooks into you and it seems like all you do I work to pay the truck... Now let the haters commence lol... Now you will hear how it is soooo convenient.. the truck comes, you give them your cash and you just keep going deeper and deeper into debt so soon.. you 20 year old guys will wake up one day and realize now you are 50 and you still owe thousands to these guys... That cool truck now is dreaded ....every week... Be careful. Craftsman is everywhere now....so trading in broken stuff (when it happens) is on the way home and no waiting for weeks for the truck to bring your replacement. or reason why it was your fault and they refused to honor warranties...
One thing you will find with diag and used Cars in a dealer- you will want some storage for known good parts. Especially connectors and such that are special order and/or the only option is broke when delivered... Save you the headache and bs from your manager.
Cheers to your new box man! I still got to make a video of mine! I had my channel locked out and had to make a new one oh well will be adding videos when time permits! Cheers!
🍻😎🤙
Looks great and nice set up. Can't wait to see the hutch.
I always liked Matco boxes, very nice. I wish you all the best at your new shop brother.
Loved the intro. Congratulations on the new box Dow.
Sweet new Matco 4S Justin! Good luck on your new endeavour
Awesome Awesome tour that Matco 4S box Rocks I was just looking at one on my Matco dealers truck today and the $13,000 reasons why I don't need one I did buy the 90t double box end flex head ratcheting wrenches today though as well as the new digital tire inflator and new torch cause my old one finally took a nose dive I bought a few other things too have an awesome time at your new shop it's always good to work with new people and see how they do things
“Worst drawer” looks better than most 😂 can’t wait to see the end product of the box
Love the intro it’s been a while since I watched cheers 🍻
Good luck on your new adventure.
Heck yeah brother, congrats! Good luck at the dealer and with your career. Don't worry about us, career and family first brother.
Magnetic screwdriver holder, stick to the side of your box and put some screwdrivers and pry bars in it
Good luck with the move to your new job, hope all works out for ya and I’ve been enjoying the content!
Those Westling socket trays are pretty awesome I have them in my box and they just look so damn good!
Love the new box
Congrats on the job and the box. Stay safe
Good luck at the dealership. I love that box. I use the Ernst socket organizers. You can change the pegs on each rail. So if you needed 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 on one rail you could. Like if you wanted to put torx bits on one rail.
Good luck bro, change is scary but can be good. Hope it all works out in the way you want it to.
Great video. I like the way you have organized it and made it all fit. Amazing job.
Glad you liked it!
Looks good like the set up
Best of luck to you, man. I'll always be subbed.
I’m happy with my Westling machine socket racks.. they are strong and simple
Nice tool box Justin
Man that really is nice! I love the dual long top drawers. Awesome that you were able to pay cash👍
Looks good i still have my 5 drawer Everest cart with a 10 drawer side box
After seeing you put that us general to work I’m definitely going to have to look into it.
It was a Great Box for Heavy Line!! Best Ever made just for that reason. Now time to put the suite & tie on & see how the diagnostic side goes. lol Cheers 🍻
Nice looking box man 🤤
That box is awesome bro see you tommorow 🤘🏻🐿🤘🏻
🍻😎🤙
One of my main things I liked about your channel was you showing you actually working on stuff unlike most the other tool channels! But good luck on making your self better!
Thanks Brotherman. I’m sure we will still do some real world repairs and utilization of specific tools along the way. All in good time my friend. Might not be in an actual shop setting, but maybe that’s a good thing. Everyone here knows that I can get down right in my driveway and I think there’s a lot more appreciation the driveway repairs because it shows how you can get something fixed without having a lift and being in a shop atmosphere. So let’s just play it by ear
Nice Justin 👍👏 used cars at the dealership shouldn’t be too bad where I work at they hand out used car inspections as filler work
Hey i like the rolled up sleave with the smokes
Blow molded cases are both the best and the worst thing to happen to tools. I love the organization they bring but they take up so much room. If you notice most techs now have two boxes just to fit all the cases they own. Many times i have contemplated taking all the tools out and throwing all my cases away but I can never bring myself to doing it. BTW love those Sunex sockets; they are the best.
Absolutely agree 100% there are certain blowmolded cases that I do not mind taking home and putting in storage for a later date, there are other items that I feel should remain in their blow mold case. But I’m not afraid to throw away a blow mold in case. I’m kind of 50-50 it depends on the layout if I like the way it lays out are usually leave it and make adjustments around it
I like the new box of your I think if it was 28-30 deep you would have no problem getting all the tools in there I understand it is what it is and can’t make deeper it will work out for you
the only thing missing is power sterring great looking box justin 👍🇨🇦
Check out the socket trays from Westling. Absolutely phenomenal
Welcome back 90s and the cigs rolled up in the sleeve haha thanks for the video
🍻😎🤙
VIM mag rails are the way to go, matco grid is nice but it takes up part of your depth in your drawer, ive tryed alot of different organizational items and im now converting everything to VIM, i even turned my mac dealer on to them befor VIM. started making the magrails for MAC tools
On the drawers there are dials you can turn to make the draw hard or softer to pull open and close
Holy shit thats a lot of tools lol goodluck on new job 🤙
I just bought my 4s yesterday! 🔥
Nice!! Hope you enjoy it. Cheers!! ToA New 4S Box!
Agree with the Matco Tool peg board, but for $200 you can obtain several sets of the VIM nag rails 16" long which can also be cut to fit your drawer. FYI really strong magnetic pull.
Good luck at the dealership man, that’s probably the best looking matco box I’ve ever seen.
Thanks Brotherman 🍻😎🤙
Hey Justin I think you need to organize my tool box! Lol mine needs some love! I’m definitely getting some ideas from your videos!
Thanks Brotherman 🍻😎🤙
Matco offers a top drawer for that box. It adds a lot of extra room and wasn’t too pricey. I had one on my 4$
My buddy bought the top drawers add on and it totally changed it the hutch was a little short until he did that I know they aren't cheap though
Westling socket trays are the best cost a bit but you can get the I guess you would say starter kit with 1/4 metric and sas sam with 3/8 and 1/2 for like 100 bucks may be more than that but I think it's real close but you already know about them lol
Awesome box I felt the same way when I moved all my tools into my snap on. Look into that big top drawer Matco offers for those that would be a ton of extra room for you congratulations again
I have the top drawer on my 4s and it gave me a ton of more space
Thanks for the advice I will consider that in the future 🍻😎🤙
The new intro, 👍.
good video
Must be glad to be going into the used car side , can definitely rack up some hours
For your pry bar issue.... Matco makes a pry bar holder for their boxes that mounts on the side and is lockable
Good to know. Thanks for the very helpful information 🍻😎🤙
Like the new intro.
Can. U do a update on this box? How it’s holding up and if ur glad u bought it over a snap on?
Hey I just realized if your back at a dealership in the low desert you get to meet the new Cornwell Guy. His names George. Really cool dude, put the work in building that route back up. I see him on payday 😅
Nice 👍Cheers & Miss me some Cornwell 🍻😎🤙
Check out the Sunex 8008 or 8011 for pry bar and long screw driver organization 👍👍
Freeeeeeeesh
Ernst socket rails and wrench widget holders
Have you look inside the lifts ? I almost did the same thing lost my 3/8 ratchet ( Cornwell ) and found it were I left it. Inside the lift opening at the end of the points
I have not. I may do that when I get to work in the morning. The vehicle we last used it on was not on a lift, but that doesn’t mean that somebody didn’t potentially borrow it and leave it in the left so I will definitely look thank you
Have you considered getting the top drawer add on. I did it my 4s and I got a lot more space. I’m planning on getting a locker and a hutch.
Someone else has also made mention of this ad on. I am taking it into consideration and most likely will purchase it at a later date. It takes time to save and that’s my plan. Honestly I would like to have an end locker More than a middle drawer. Only because I have a lot of testing equipment that I prefer a blow mold in case and I feel like a locker would be better moving forward in the immediate future
Channels to watch if your looking to learn diag. Scannerdanner, pine hollow and L1.
I’m trying to decide between master series and a Matco 4s
Hey Justin does Dodge use the same fuel line disconnect tools
as GM?? Man you will love the
electrical side of being a tech
the challenge of the hunt!! That
was my first ASE certification!!
As long as you have a good wiring
diagram even if it takes a little time
you can find the problem, just be
ready to pull seats, carpets, headliners and trim to find the
problem!! I think you will do great
brother!! Cheers and Dueces!!
Oh I forgot dashes too on pulling
interior stuff apart!!😆😆😆😆😆
For the most part yes. Most domestic manufacturers use similar disconnect styles for their fuel lines
Congratulations on the new box. Good luck with everything. I wanted to ask why you didn't get the 28" deep 4s?
what seal driver set do you own ?
Hey Justin, I’ve been a road mechanic for a couple years now and my Snapon box is completely beat up because of it and I want to bring it home, what would you suggest for a nice road box/chest for service truck? Would really like Snapon one but it’s way out of my price range
Well if it's going to be a mobile box it's going to get beat to shit either way. Bigger question is home much do you want to pay for the same result?
Congrats and paid cash Even better
What brand dealership you moving too.
Your making matco boxes look good to me sir, it's gonna be a toss up between matco and sp for a service cart as the shop is starting to grow up, I'll need to be mobile again
Rocking Roll Brotha 🍻😎🤙
The biggest downside to independent shops is there looking for guys with 30 years experience that have already learned everything. Dealerships are great because theres room to learn and grow. Good luck man
Why do you use the gear wrench sockets an not your other ones
Which Other One's? I have the ICON Sockets at home for home use now. The Gearwrench Mechanic's set I bought to give my honest opinion and review same as I did with all the other prior sets. Unlike the ICON if I have an Issue with any of the Jeff usually will just trade me out. I've only had to warranty out the 8mm. Everything fits in a designated tray that I can take on the fly without having to go back and fourth which saves me time. Because I leave them all in the little box they came in they take up no unnecessary space in my box. Which is a Huge plus. That includes the wrench tray as well.
Do some weekends at the independent, that would help them and you.
They’re closed on weekends
Can you still do cool tool Tuesday at the new shop?
Not sure time tells all
Part no. for that gearwrench set on top of your box?
Description Cuz 🍻😎🤙
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway looks like a mini tool box. With 3 drawers. Orange and grey. Sitting on the top of your 4s box.
Lol kinda like moving right!? You don't know just how much you got till you go through it all and reorganize it into a new box. But, more is better then less. Once you get the hutch, that will help for sure!
True Story. lol
the new job not like the idea of you having 2 boxes in there aka roll cart to work out of then the harbor freight box for over flow slash not every day tools as for keeping wrenches in order have you looked at the toolbox widget line i know he has stuff for wrenches and plyers and such not sure about sockets he is also a mechanic and a US vet so i am in the works of getting some of his stuff to get my wrenches in order
Congratulations on your upward move. I still hope your channel does not all that much but i know it has to for the best. I know you are going to a dealership. But for heavy-line like now or??
What's the plan to transport it to the dealership? Got a forklift and flatbed ready?🍺
Most likely I will call a neighboring tow company and pay them to safely load it up and transport it
Are you still keeping you small stand up cart
No I’m trading the Jamestown into the MATCO Tools rep.
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway I meant the the little tray like kart with one drawer that you just got
Can you adjust the volume on your new intro? I like it but I have to actually adjust my volume on it.
🤷♂️ I’m not sure how to be honest. I paid someone to make it for me.
Justin Dow... Are there any tools you don't have but need going into the new job? I have stuff that I don't need that you might want that I could send to ya. Check out my toolbox tours (see what I did there) and let me know if you see something you want.. DM on Instagram.
I’m good brother. I appreciate it. If anything there’s a handful things things that I don’t need anymore or that I had three sets of somehow LOL I’ll probably have to start creating some kind of list of what I’m gonna sell and for how much
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway Yes sir I am going to make a list of things that I'm going to sell too..
Ok so buy a bigger box than you think you need. Got it 😁
I get rid of all the plastic boxes stuff comes in saves room in tool box.
Still hasn't got that external mic :(
Why not the Icon box and hutch
Didn’t you have one.
As I've explained in previous videos, I didn't like the dimensions of the drawers & I was happier with the US General 56" being at work.
I'm in same shoes....yet I'm master at diagnostic.. hate to leave my boys that were there 4 me in hard times.... ones that we fixed mothers cars and daughters off books .....u cant do that at dealership..u got to lie with that pen if know what I mean in paperwork
Is not going be enough
Damn bro looks like you already need a bigger box lol
lol I know right. lol
I have the same tool box 🧰
Nice 🍻😎🤙💯
Don’t do the Matco socket peg board nonsense. I went with Ernst socket boss rails, or if I had to start over vim magrails. I did my screwdrivers and wrenches with toolbox widget. And dump those blow molded cases! They waste so much space.
Sk wrench racks are 2 bucks right now
Get the extra drawer an why a hutch? Imo its just a waste of space
I will be working more on a computer and my diagnostic tablet and for that reason I decided to go with a hutch. Something that I can have a computer desk mixed in with a tool storage cabinet. Nothing more and nothing less.
Why don't you see it as crappy and still go. No expectations
?? What’s Crappy?? Yes I will miss the crew that I worked with and that I grew so fond of. There are a lot of things that I will miss about the independent shop lifestyle. All that being said it’s time to move forward. Technology is forever changing and I want to change with it. I want to learn the side B of things. See if side A was the nuts and bolts side of being a mechanic then side B Would be the electrical in Diagnostic side of being a technician. Now one day I either want to be an instructor or would like to open my own shop. Without knowing both sides I do not believe there is a way to be successful in either category. So I’m looking at my future as a whole moving forward. I have spent 10 years of my life learning the nuts and bolts side of the Automotive trade. I should like to spend 10 more years on the electrical and diagnostic side. Once I have completed that timeframe I would like to move into either an instructional position at a college or have owned my own shop where I can hopefully train and Mentor others.
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway woah wasn't talking about all of that. Just put your expectations low. So they don't get cut down
@@jesselyons2002 Thanks Brotha. I'm hopeful. Cheers!
lol wifey just said.. he bought 60 k worth of tools to do a 1k job lololllll just kidding :-)
Good luck in used cars, I lasted four years.
Your too damn young fir retirement. I'm just starting in the automotive field and I'm 47.
Wow thats cool
Never too young to retire 🍻😎🤙 it’s one less thing to stress about if your focused on the road ahead 💯
