I see a lot of appreciation for James McAvoy here, and it’s well deserved. But Sharon Horgan’s performance should not be overlooked or outshined by him. This was brilliant. The recognition she’s FINALLY getting is definitely earned.
As someone that VERY nearly lost an uncle to Covid, and seeing every family member’s response (not just my own)… This was heartbreaking. Luckily, my uncle survived, but he’s STILL in physical therapy after coming out of it months ago. They doubt he’ll ever be the same. That’s something a lot of people don’t understand about this illness. Sometimes even when you survive it, it can still disable you for life.

It happens a lot in elderly care - that initial infection or fall or injury that requires treatment and time in hospital (and less mobile), the person can never quite get back to the strength they had before and end up in a spiral of further weakness, illness.

@@telectronix1368 My Mom passed away in Sep. 2018 at the age of 94, three days after breaking her pelvis in a fall. You are told that it can happen quickly but even then it was a shock how quickly. I was in the room with her but I was reading and only realized that her raspy breathing had stopped. In retrospect, I was glad that, despite the pain she had experienced, it was fast and, in the end, peaceful. Mom had Alzheimer’s and after 10 years of caring for her, she had reached to point where I knew that it was only weeks before I would have to find a place for her. She was experiencing paranoia and almost constantly fear in our home because, aside from me, she recognized nothing around her any more.
And, of course, with COVID, she wouldn’t have been safe had she lived to 2020…
The fact is that dying, whether you have people with you or not, it is the one thing you do entirely alone. You come into the world being aware of people around you. Dying, you do alone. And most people who are dying in hospital usually seem the choose to go when they are alone. People could have been around them every minute for days. They step out of the room for a minute or two and their lived one chooses that moment to die.
After my father suddenly died many years ago, I read a very good book called “How We Die”. It helped me understand the process of dying and then death, itself. In a way, it helped me understand my father’s death and, years later, my Mom’s death. That helped me greatly when Mom went.

I lost my grandma to covid 2 days before I got my second vaccine shot. It felt like I had run a marathon only to find no one at the finish line...and that the race had been the previous day. The only thing I'm grateful for is that my aunt was with her and she went fast.

I lost some good friends to the virus. I've been to the cemetery more times than ever before. My parents are fine, but many friends have lost theirs. It's hard to walk through the village now and realize that so many are gone. Almost a bit surreal. And I just hate to meet people now who still deny the virus

My Dad died many years before COVID, I held his hand when he left. Many years later I held Margaret’s hand as she lay dying on the road after being hit by a car. I had nothing else to offer as they died except being there to hold their hand so they wouldn’t be alone. I have to believe it makes a difference to them. If not, why am I even here?

I think 'dying alone' [even if we don't know we are about to die] has to be one of the biggest fears we all have. I am 100% certain that both your dad and Margaret were comforted by your presence. Personally, I am impressed by your kindness and strength in staying at those crucial moments in time, when many people's instinct [yours included] would be to run away. You're a good person, Dawn.

      - there is a highly contagious potentially lethal virus - common sense says you stay away from people to try and minimise the spread. One of the many reasons we’ve struggled with the virus is because it’s a global pandemic - everyone’s struggling and not everyone is following the rules - if everyone did the chances are we’d be well on our way to getting past Covid! How many more people would have died if we had no measures at all? It would have broken the NHS, and as it was it was straining. And look at New Zealand, who went big and early with them, not trying to kowtow to pub owners and other greedy capitalists, and came out of them with very few deaths or infections, relatively short lockdowns, a functioning health system, and an intact economy without spending much at all.
