  • I put a £30 Chinese copy of this famous mic up against the original. I noticed a few things - not just the sound.
There is a hum in one section - I moved in closer, and somehow dislodged something and the copy appears to hum - it doesn't hum, but the hum was very evident when I edited it. Oddly, the hum has gone now, so forgive me for letting you hear it in the middle section.
The copy is close in, thinner - but used at a distance the real thing is just the bass end is a bit weaker, and that could be an EQ fix? On stage - I doubt it would even be a problem.

To me the copy sounds way too thin and maybe even a bit harsh, the capsule is really cheap, I wish they tried a more decent one, not a good mic except maybe for karaoke fun and a good look for music video recording

Hardly a fair comparison with the buzz in the background. You should have scrapped it and repeated the test.

First off, calling it a “Chinese copy” is downplaying the crime. It’s not a copy it’s a COUNTERFEIT, and you should call it such. They put the Shure logo on it. That’s counterfeiting.
There’s a noticeable difference. The Chinese has a lot of noise. Also it’s brittle and sibilant. The 55SH only sounds “period” to you because you’re mentally biased by the look. The spec sheet places the 55HS in the ballpark of the SM58. Of course, to really compare them fully, you need to sing into them.

Ok, I'm halfway through, and I've heard enough. Don't quite see the point of comparing a crappy mic with an even crappier one! Sorry.

I think because so many people are buying 50s mics? The difference in price is £150+ I suppose some people might think the Shure is streets ahead and think it good value, others far less. You do hear people ask if they're any good, and I think it maybe unfair to say they're rubbish?

@@pauljohnson4590 No, I don't think it's unfair at all to call them rubbish!!! 😛

Can you test for SPL levels where each mic overloads? And frequency response differences?
