Another brilliant episode guys. Trips down memory lane, you can't beat them.👏👏HH
Charlie was my hero growing up. I was 16 years old when he left Celtic and was devastated and angry that he left us for money and the good life. When he returned in 1989, I was looking forward to him repeating some of his earlier magic, but truth be told he made me angry again as I felt he stole a wage for the next 5 years and was injury prone, looked slow and lazy and unfit for most of his second spell. I often reflect on what might have been had Charlie stayed at Celtic for a few seasons beyond 1983. For younger viewers who never saw Charlie in his peak - he was one of the best young players in Europe. In 82-83 he scored 48 goals in 53 games. Astonishing. he also used to score special and spectacular goals with pure skill and cheek, That's why Celtic fans loved him, it was his style and skill, the way he did it was simply poetry in motion.
Great listening
Charlie Nics goal at Ibrox, into the Celtic end, is the one for me. Where he cuts inside and blooters it into the top corner.
To add more context to the 5 Asides at Wembley - it wasn't played on astroturf and the playing area was roughly the size of a Wimbledon tennis court. The venue was more like an old school games hall surface - concrete with painted markings for other sports - basketball, netball etc! Also the goals were low (about 1m high and 3m wide).
great show again guys
A couple of things to add context for younger viewers: Sportsnight used to come on at 10pm on a Wednesday night, it was a primarily an English programme and usually featured English football (FA cup replays etc. England internationals) or occasionally a Scottish team in Europe. So very few English people would have seen Celtic. Another thing to consider, there were only 3 TV channels, no internet, and no football was ever shown in pubs and video recorders were just coming out - not many had one. So if you wanted to see the game, you had to leave the pub to go home to see it.
Should have mentioned that on the Saturday after we won the 5 asides at Wembley, we played at Firhill (not far from Charlie's home) and when Charlie came on as a sub in the second the half...the fans were singing "5 asides at Wembley....we won the 5 asides at Wembley..." (to the tune of Guantanamera)
KEVIN - The Elland Rd game in 1970 was not covered by BBC, it was covered by ITV Brian Moore commentator.
Howdy guys hope yous are keeping well☘️
Brilliant 😂 remember it 😂😂
🍀🍀--Hail-Hail--🍀🍀
As dodgy , low down , louche podcasts go ,that was pretty good. Hail Hail 😊🍀🍀
Peter Peter gee us a wave 👋🏽 😂
Kevin is talking pure nonsense about Nicholas in 1986 World Cup. He wasn't at the races in the two games he played v Denmark and Uruguay.
