- The Baja 1000 is a Mexican off-road motorsport race held each year on the Baja California Peninsula. The race was founded by Ed Pearlman in 1967 and is sanctioned by SCORE International. It is one of the most prestigious off-road races in the world, attracting competitors from Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, England, Finland, France, Germany, Guam, Guatemala, Holland, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay, Yugoslavia and from every state in the United States, as well as the host country of Mexico. The race is the final round of a four-race annual series, including the SCORE Desert Challenge, the SCORE San Felipe 250 and the SCORE Baja 500. The 2017 Baja 1000 marked the 50th anniversary of the race.
The Baja 1000 allows various types of vehicle classes to compete on the same course with classes for; cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs and buggies. The course has remained relatively the same over the years, about every other event being either a point-to-point race from Ensenada to La Paz, or a loop race starting and finishing in Ensenada. The name of the event can be misleading as the mileage varies for the type of event ("Loop" of 600 to 850 miles starting and finishing in Ensenada, or "Point to Point" also known as the 900.

Banshee didn't come out until the late '87 and did not hold up like other Yamahas very temperamental 2-stroke that always broke down my 86-250r beat it in a drag race every time when I had a quadzilla lt500 that you could couldn't keep up couldn't catch up I used to love the two strokes when I was young I didn't mind having to rebuild the engine every 8 hours at least the top end and then every 40 hours you'd have to replace the rod bearings that was a pain unless you had the 900.00 to throw a wiseco crank in it and bearing kit and gaskets you still only get 40 hours out of the wise go crank too it's kind of expensive before we used to call them hookers had to have their nails and their hair done every time you took them out

This brings back memories watching this in VHS wen I was a kid and this was the coolest stuff.
when I was a kid and a quad nut I would watch stuff like this or read about it in dirt wheels and dream of Runing the BH1k or at least the Tecate 250 but never did make it .. at least I finally got a banshee in 91 then a new on in 94 ... I still ride but mostly just put around ..

My dad bought a 93 new and then I got it in 95 and he bought a 96. @ 13 Years old it was a rush when that power band hit🤘, hang on for the ride haha. Good ole days! Thank you pops and Yamaha 🤪

By the looks not counting the engine pretty much stock thats all there was back then i guess you could say the screaming gost aka BANSHEE was in its early infancy so there was not much aftermarket stuff for it was pretty new

I would like to see a 3 wheeler try to beat a bike or 4 wheel in desert racing haha... These are long races, average speed, suspension, and reliability more important than peak hp.

The banshee is not the best race quad in the world especially when you hurt him he had to rebuild the bike to run the race for every 8 hours of riding that thing you got to put it in the shop for 40 hours get everything redone because they are very picky about blowing their top end and the bottom end so if you're super rich it's the best quad in the world for you because it's been more time in the shop than it does on the dirt

@@estebanruelas872 well why is it I can buy a broken down YZ250 fix it rebuild it whatever I have to do to it and I can ride it for months I can buy a banshee fix it and ride it for 2 weeks I bought a Suzuki lt500 quadzilla repaired it I could ride it for months I could buy a banshee completely restore the motor pulley I mean bearings whatever needs to be replaced on it cranks rods Pistons cylinders and I can ride it for a month 30 days before it f**** up that's not riding for me if I get the chance I'll ride everyday all day every chance I get to go ride I ride even after being hit by a car I still ride
