Great info, thanks for sharing. This 3M filtrate 1900. Surprisingly allows more airflow when it’s dirty than the 1500, 1000, etc because it has much more pleats and surface area.

With smoke from wildfires being a reoccurring summer event in our area, this merv 13 filter is all we use. In winter months, I scale back to a lower merv rating.

Interestingly, the lower Merv rating 3M filters actually have about the same static pressure when they’re clean but more static pressure than the 1900 when they are dirty. It’s because the 1900 Has Way more surface area because it has way more pleats.

I've been using the 3M 1500 (merv12 ?) filter in my no frills basic Goodman furnace for almost 20 years now,, sometimes over 3 months because the furnace doesn't run continuously, No problems except to replace the ceramic igniter one time, even when take the filter out it doesn't seem to be very dirty and I have an Australian Shepherd although a small house.✌️

Everyone’s household will be different. 3M makes great products.

I tried Aerostar 18X18X1 Merv13 and they were very flimsily edges, not a lot of pleats compared to the 3M, louder sound because of the restrictive airflow at the intake vent, and had a larger gap around the edges for air to slip past. The 3M 1900 18X18X1 is much more sturdy design, doesn't deform when the air turns on, much quieter when operating because of the higher air flow, and fits really snug for a perfect fit within the air intake.

No doubt 3M is the top dog for MERV 13.

@@FurnaceFilterTalk - but the 3M 1900 is quite expensive to use if say changing every 60 days.

Hi Don - Have you tested the 3M Filtrete MERV 14? Since the MERV 13 allowed such good air flow after 3 months still, wondered what the MERV 14 might be like?

I recommend never going above a MERV 13. It is just too risky. I would test it but 3M doesn't make it my size. (18x18x1). That being said out of all companies and based on what I have seen on the MERV 13 3M might be an exception. The additional filtering I can't see being worth the risk though!

@@FurnaceFilterTalk Ok thank you. I have asthma and was looking for as much filtration as possible but there isn't much difference. I sure don't want to risk my H/A system. I'll stick with the MERV 13. Thanks for that detailed review. I was thinking of another brand until I found your channel.

It’s merv 13 because they put more cheaper pleats in. That’s probably why it doesn’t get clogged as fast. But even then, it doesn’t really make sense.

It has twice as many pleats as other brands. Their pleats are very sharp and the processing methods are different. The larger square footage of media is why it last longer. Same reason 4” and 5” filters last longer. Pretty great filter.

@@BalancedWorkLife - yes the 3M 1900 is good but quite expensive if say changing every 60 days. If you don't have severe allergies - I'd rather get a lesser expensive MERV 8 and change every 30-60 days.
