I wish you the best of luck in your vocabulary. The door needs to be removed( he couldn’t get it off because of the fuel lines) and coil cover removed for a complete inspection.
Commercial system design engineer here, and I completely agree. Most small gas furnaces like this don't have a lot of static pressure capability from the fan. No more than MERV 8 filters should be installed for these. Even MERV 6 "rockstopper" as we call them are fine for non-dusty climates. Bonus tip: Don't ever use carpet freshening powder. It's bad for your vacuum and bad for your air filters!
One of my relatives was complaining about air flow and was using one of these restrictive filters in her old HVAC system. She only had one small filter intake in her two story house. It has been my experience that the majority of HVAC systems are not designed for these restrictive filters but they remain very popular. The big box stores really push these expensive filters and consumers don't realize which is the best filter for their system.
My man, I had the same exact service call this week. Brand new home owner thinking he's doing good by spending a ton of money on 3M filters. Tripping high limit. Always, always tell my customers to go cheap. Great video!!!
I like some of the commercial equipment I work on. It has pressure test ports on each side of the filter to attach a differential manometer and a pair of pitot tubes to check airflow too. Nothing needs opened to measure the airflow and filter restriction. Normal airflow is just under 1/2 inch WC and HEPA filter is about 3 inches water column.
1" pleated filters are good for up to around 900-1000 cfm, beyond that the pressure drop is way too high at 16x25x1. Allergen 3Ms are even worse when they plug up. Fiberglass really sucks though, so the solution is to install a merv 8 media filter on larger systems.
Just had a recent call very similar to this one. White buildup on the filter choking air flow. Wasn't there 5 minutes. If a new tech hasn't experienced this yet, they will sooner than later. Thanks for the video.
I've found out that those filters look white like that for a few reasons. It's plugged with shit from the humidifier, or they use that sprinkle powder carpet cleaner. I can't count how many times I skipped the filter because it looked white like that only to find it was plugged solid with white powder....
It comes down to the equipment (furnace or air handler). The manual tells you what type of filter is good for the furnace. Filters & furnaces are matched to work together, you can’t just throw any type of filter. High efficiency filters cause more pressure drop & the fan motor should be designed specifically to work with those filters.

I just installed a 3M filter (16X25X1) in my furnace last week and now find out how bad they are and from other sources too. If they are really that bad, then what filter would be the best filter to use?? I can take that one out and put in one that I don't hear so many horror stories about.
I've always had problems with those filters. 3m has always been especially bad. What was it 2 years ago when they changed the style of their filter. Majority of our calls during the polar vortex were pleated filters and nest thermostat issues.
That was not a 3M filter that was taken out. It was an Arm and Hammer filter. They preload those with baking soda....white powder. That is what caused the blockage.
They need to change their air filter every once in a while. I have to change mine at least vacuum it out with dogs running around once a week. I seen those charcoal ones with the mini charcoal bits glued to the inside of the filter. I really enjoy spending a weekend ripping apart my furnace to vacuum those micro black bits out of the secondary exchanger.
The water pads are a paper material and even with calicum in the water isn't enough to cause it to even come close to clogging it. Simple the owner doesn't do maintenance or use the right filter
Thats what it is, people put tap water in portable humidifiers, it says on directions use distilled water. When water evaporates it will cause the white sediment in water to suck into return back to filter. This is a callback, title should be portable humidifiers kill furnaces. Once you run into it once, it want throw you off. 5 calls just this week on this issue.
Huh. I've been running 3M filters rated at MERV 11 for almost 10 years in my place, and haven't had a problem. I've replaced them religiously every three months, don't have any pets, and my house stays pretty clean. I wonder if that makes a difference? Edit: I do give them the "daylight" check every time I replace them, and they've never seemed plugged, I can still see a lot of light through them. Maybe I should just save myself the money and get the cheap ones.
Exactly! The one with the purple frame is the worst. I call it the Purple Devil. I don't know what filtrete is doing with their filters. That's only something that I've seen occurring over the last couple of years. It's very strange. Some of the filters almost feel like paper mache.

Only use Merv 13 if you have allergies or prone to respiratory infections, and change once a month. Personally as an HVAC tech of 10 years I recommend everyone replace filters once a month. I found from experience, over time changing the filter only when it’s pretty dirty causes the blower motor to wear out well before it should.
Make a simple U-tube manometer to check the pressure on the intake side of the blower. Decide how much negative pressure is acceptable for the system and install a filter that will not clog up and exceed that negative pressure

I’ve told customers for years to use nothing more than MERV 8 filters. I tell people that if they have allergy concerns they will be better off in the long run with an air cleaner and a U V light. 🇨🇦
I recently purchased a 6 pack of merv 5. I may pull out the fairly new Merv 11 I have in the furnace right now and consider it a loss and put in the merv 5.
Must have been doing something inside like sheetrock work or something or like people saying humidifiers. I get bulk air filters online but not 3m just pleated but not anything crazy
I had the same question. I’m using a 4” pleated MERV 10 in an old electronic air cleaner. When the filter gets dirty, it will trip the high limit and cause the furnace to cycle but a fresh 4” filter gives me no error codes and no cycling issues.
I see that Pre-2004 water heater (looks like an older AO Smith) and I pity the guy who has to change it out. The sediment likely inside and that crappy plastic drain valve. UGH
When I have low air flow the first thing I check is the filter. I never run filters higher than MERV 5 or below, even 3 or 4. Hi MERV filters will cause your furnace to overheat and damage it A filter is cheaper than a new furnace!!!
If you can’t see light through the filter then it’s to thick and is killing your blower motor and drawing more amps then it needs .. 15 years as a hvac tech ...any company that try’s to sell you a media filter is a snake
On psc motor if the filter is plugged your amps go down, not up. Your heat exchanger temp goes up. Result is open limit and your are badly stressing the heat exchangers, but your motor is not over amped. You are reducing the air load on the fan thus the motor is not working hard at all, but the net result is robbing air across the heat exchanger.
That is just terrible advice. I only use MERV 13 filters in my 13 year old Goodman condensing furnace (6400 burner hours in last 8 years since I began measuring) and I get acceptable 45-50 degree rise on med-high blower speed. Absolutely no problems. Increase blower speed if necessary to limit rise. High density MERV 13 filters trap 89% of Covid 19 on first pass as part of cleaning the air better and reduce electrical demand on the blower whenever air flow is reduced. There is absolutely no reason to replace them until heating temperature rise becomes excessive. Contrary advice is just sales hype for people who don't/can't monitor performance. Air flow requirements may be greater with AC, but that's why there are higher speeds available and proper furnace installation requires adequate duct work - not elimination of quality filtration.
nothing wrong with 3m filters if you change them reg. from the get go. Once furnace gets clogged up you have to do a very deep clean to get back to good flow. I don't think your methods are valid.
Why wasn't this checked 1st? I have seen filters plugged so bad that they were collapsed inward from the negative air pressure. Most idiots are lucky to change the filter once a year and sometimes never. Poor maintenance as usual by the homeowner.
If you listen to his explanation, he states he checked it first but it didn't appear dirty. It was filled with white dust that was the same color. Until he ran his finger over it he couldn't tell.
I've had this conversation so. many. times. with customers. Stop using these filters. They aren't helping with air quality. They are killing the life expectancy on your furnace.
Maybe a better title would be "Lack of Maintenance Will Kill Your Furnace" I have used the Filtrete 1200 Allergen Reduction Filters since I built my house in 2008. Not one problem with the furnace in 13 years. Don't believe everything you see on the interweb.
Wait you don’t check a filter first whenever you’re doing a service call, instead you like to crawl around looking at ductwork and gas lines fiddling with a fan and checking airflow.
I bet you anything they’re running those stand alone humidifiers in their bedrooms. That causes that white film on those filters, we see it all the time
Need to install TWO ! 20” X 30” X 5” deep (just example) to replace that single 1” filter to step up to MERV 11, MERV 13 and make it big enough in surface face area in case they go crazy and install MERV 16. Get that surface face air velocity down around 200 per square foot of high Merv surface medium face velocity. 400 face velocity is pushing the edge of laboratory conditions only with clean air as soon as you collect even a little amount of dust you go right into restriction. Always over engineer it more surface face velocity on MERV filters is better. But they will cry like a little baby when you give them the price to make up the custom sheet metal cabin and the price of the filters. “ but I only want to spend $20 for a Home Depot filter” with very few pleats so it gets restricted faster and has less surface area face

When I have low air flow the first thing I check is the filter. I never run filters higher than MERV 5 or below, even 3 or 4. Hi MERV filters will cause your furnace to overheat and damage it A filter is cheaper than a new furnace!!!
I'm not a doctor, but an hour into the service and then you check the air filter. ?
Merv 8 and what change out interval would you recommend?
30 days during high use season unless you leave system blower running constantly then more often
So true good job i make bank on those calls thanks to home depot and lowes and stupid people
Yes they can.
First ad was for filtrete filters
good advise. thanks.
#Mi Heating Guy What brand and type of air filter is good to use
Merv 8 or less
I've taken those filters out thinking they were new because it was white but I couldn't see through it. They suck
I hope that's your finger 9:30.
Thick filters will end up tripping the limit switches
I've had this conversation so. many. times. with customers. Stop using these filters. They aren't helping with air quality. They are killing the life expectancy on your furnace.
Also I changed it every three months
Had people been to a home show and bought $100 filter. New blower motor.
Yeah, filters only catch that bright white dust. Here's your bill.
I always tell home owners a 4 is enough.
yea nut its in the fire gonna b hot get the ov glove on
change mine every 4 weeks
Steve Lav tells his customers the same thing. Buy the cheap filters.
in one his video he did put 3M one in
Ok
put in a new filt this time joe leave the plastic wrapper on da some folks should still b in apts or mommas basement
Maybe a better title would be "Lack of Maintenance Will Kill Your Furnace" I have used the Filtrete 1200 Allergen Reduction Filters since I built my house in 2008. Not one problem with the furnace in 13 years. Don't believe everything you see on the interweb.
Wait you don’t check a filter first whenever you’re doing a service call, instead you like to crawl around looking at ductwork and gas lines fiddling with a fan and checking airflow.
so you didn't watch the whole video and listened to what i said at the end of the video and you just wanted to make a stupid comment
I bet you anything they’re running those stand alone humidifiers in their bedrooms. That causes that white film on those filters, we see it all the time
Same here.
Using distilled water in those humidifiers prevents that mineral white powder from forming. But most people don't.
Don't use pleated filters
Why do people waste their money on that crap as seen on tv the kid at home depot said it was good, like the water heater blanket. .
3m filters are the best for your health
not good for your bank account when you need new system from using them them over priced filters
Change the water heater there while you're at it , Looks old
I was thinking the same thing. Late 80s early 90s by the color scheme.
#139 thumbs Up
Filters dont kill furnaces...clueless people do
Need to install TWO !
