  • Listen. I know it's not a messer, but doing flowdrills with a greatsword is well, eh... great. Also, Landsknechts used them under the name Schlachtschwert, so I guess I can get away with it? In any case, have a quick review of the Regenyei spadone no. 3 and find out if it's suitable for more than just Italian sources. ;)

    It looks gorgeous! But when it comes to costs, you forgot to mention all the things you're likely to break in your house by accident when you inevitably get excited showing it off.

    I had the chance to use one of these and fell in love with it instantly. Finally managed to get myself one. It is on order so it will probably take a while till i get it.
    Mine will have a devided grip, wrapped in plain brown leather, pear shaped pommel and the crossguard and pommel will be blackened.
    I have no real idea how it will turn out, but i hope it will look as great as i imagine it to be. :)
    Thanks for making this video and helping the community to get some insight in this rather "niche" style of fencing.

    Great video! But since I have one of these on order, I’d love to hear more about the grip, what you didn’t like about it, and how you changed it. Maybe another video?

      Regenyei's grips tend to be somewhat flat. Redoing the grip gave the opportunity to shape it a bit. I could also add some risers. They feel good in the hand and look good. :)

    Nice review, thanks! I'm always unsure what to think of the more unusual Regenyei products. Given your focus on messer fencing, what do you think of the Regenyei messers?

    • @VirtualFechtschule
      @VirtualFechtschule  4 года назад +2

      Avoid them. They used to be the only option out there and mine lasted long enough. Time hasn't been kind to the product though. The nagel is still dangerous as heck, but after a change now no longer accomodates rubber tips easily. They are too light to teach you to fence well, but too stiff for hard sparring. They look rather meh. It used to be a good option, but other people started making better stuff and Regenyei didn't really catch up.

    That's a nice looking sword. Do you know anything about the quality of Regenyei's Flamberge Zweihander? I was interested in it, but I don't know much about Regenyei.

      @VirtualFechtschule  3 года назад +1

      Hi! I can't really comment on the quality of that one in particular, but the Regenyei greatswords give you decent value for money in general. If you want something more closely mimicking originals, you had best look for another maker though.

    Great video! i’m considering getting a steel greatsword and this one in particular seemed interesting to me :)
    one question about the grip though, you mentioned that you liked making your own, do you have any particular guide or tutorial you would recommend to for making sword grips?

    Do they custom make a piece? Like if I want a danish style type XVIIIe blade, a danish style pommel, and a danish style guard? 🤔🤨

    • @VirtualFechtschule
      @VirtualFechtschule  3 года назад

      Hi! I don't think that they do customs that often, but it can't hurt to ask. Otherwise there's a couple of other makers that do nice customs: Todcutler, Landsknecht Emporium (does greatswords, maybe?) or even Kvetun (if they can ship it from Russia).

    Is it safe enough for -controlled- sparring? I'm thinking about getting one of Regenyei's two handed steel trainers but those look quite unappealing compared to the Montante & Spadone models.

    • @VirtualFechtschule
      @VirtualFechtschule  3 года назад +2

      The big danger with any sort of greatsword will be hard whacks on hands and heads. I'm no fan of Regenyei's thrust safety compared to other makers in the first place, so having this instead of the rolled tip will not make a big difference. So yeah, controlled sparring is possible, but keep it slow until you build up your core and shoulder muscles, because stopping this sword mid-swing is hard. :P

      @@VirtualFechtschule Thanks for the answer! I just recently managed to talk my clubmates into buying messer and spear, it will be a while before I can convince them to get into greatswords... Almost everyone appears to be on "longsword default setting" but because of people like you there is inspiration to branch out to other exciting things. Thanks for sharing the long Lecküchner messer video (so far the first one RUclips), it will be extremely helpful for our practice. I can read the original German manuscripts but seeing someone perform the pieces makes everything way more accessible.

    Is it sharp or does it come sharp? Does it come with a scabbard or sheath of any kind?

    • @VirtualFechtschule
      @VirtualFechtschule  2 года назад

      The sword is blunt and comes without any scabbard. I'm sure you could get a sharp version as well and I'm assuming they'll be more than happy to build a scabbard for it too.

    the great sword is unusual not because of it's length, but because of the way it was used.

    • @VirtualFechtschule
      @VirtualFechtschule  3 года назад +1

      I don't fully agree. There's a number of different ways in which to use the things we call greatswords and not all are very different from how other types of swords were used.

      Depends on the country of origin. The Portuguese, Italian and Spanish people didn’t have the gigantic swords that the Germans and people from Switzerland used.

      It is on the shorter side. But as said, this is an earlier type. The truly big greatswords are usually associated with the late 16th and 17th centuries.

      @@grunztiertransmutator770 To some extent, yes. This is especially the case with the absurdly large ones. There's some Iberian ones that would be perfectly usable as functional blades from as late as the 2nd quarter of the 17th century, if I recall correctly.

      The spadone was made in an age where italy was relatively poor and most armies were rather small and most battles took part inside cities in the form of skirmishes.
      This thing pperates very well similarly to later greatswords models (pike-line breakers) but their actual use, where they excelled,was in skirmishes, where they could keep many opponents at bay or slice two or more mammaf*ckers at the same time if they got too cocky.
