They're solid, but I would love to see the addition of an additional defenseman still. That said, I love the recent youth injection. Cheap veterans are nice, but cheap young players have something to prove and can be hidden gems. An additional top 6ish forward would also be nice, in case any of our very solid regulars get injured (as tends to happen)
@@aidan8473 I hear you on defense, that was the one area I felt JBB did not address in the off-season. Especially with Cernak's recent string of concussions in the last few years. But I have to say De Haan has been better than expected as a depth sighing. Then you add Lilleberg and Crozier coming out of no-where in a way, kind of like Perbix did last year. I'm still waiting for Sheary to find his groove, Motte is starting to find it. Still cringe when I think about the Jeannot trade but hopefully he can find his stride when he returns. Bottom line, I don't see JBB making a big move. Especially with so many teams driving up the price. GO BOLTS!
What the Devils need to do is "buy" from their own injured reserve. Stand pat is perfect for them. While I agree Chicago is in sell mode, do they even have the bodies available *to* sell? They've resigned their best trade bait, iirc (which I do think was the correct move), and everyone else is injured. I do not what Jarmo to salvage his job in Columbus. I remember him building a *better* team in the 1st half of his tenure, but it hasn't been a *great* team, and it's gotten worse since. I don't particularly love the idea of him handling the trade deadline this season when he's a lame duck, but so long as he's gone after, I can live with it.
At the end of the first period in DC last night it felt like a wake for the Caps era of OVI-Backy-Carlson, some great regular seasons and one glorious Stanley Cup! Turn out the lights the parties over. SELL SELL SELL!!!!!!
Jets need a depth defenseman. When they went to the conference finals in 2018, they were mostly healthy. The same core players have been there since, but the team has lost 1 or more top guns to injury in recent years, thus early playoff exits. What killed them each year was lack of depth. We're seeing that right now, with Scheifele missing recent games. A top 4 D man who can slide up or down would be ideal.
Totally agree with the Rangers being potential buyers. We need our First Round Picks in order to be able to rebuild softly in a few years (Panarin, Kreider, Zibanejad are not getting younger). Until then we maybe need some depth here or there, that is all. We saw last year where the all in strategy led us.
Most of the teams on your sell-sell-sell list have assets they would like to move but that other teams won't want. And the players the buyers would want, the sellers wish to keep but may not be able too. Agree with you, it will be interesting to watch (to say the least).
@paveldatsyuk8268 Was there ever a heated wings panthers rivalry? 🤨 I don't see what the issue is unless you're one of those "you must pick 1 of 32 teams to cheer for for your entire life, not allowed to cheer for anyone else even if your favorite players change teams 😡"
The Kings could really use a guy like Sean Durzi. I wonder if they could pick him up for a 1st, Mikey Anderson, Danault, and Turcotte. Then sign Durzi to a 7 year, 10.5m contract with a no trade clause. Sound good, Blake?
I put the Devils in the same boat as the Flyers and Islanders. I’m not sure any team in the Metro will be out of the race any time soon, but they all have some contracts they can get something back for to give a team a rental if they wanted to write this season off. Especially NJ, which has Toffoli that they can sell off for solid value and has been shelled by injuries this year, it wouldn’t be the worse thing if they felt out of the race. But if I were their GM, I’d agree with you only because they have a good chance of making the playoffs if they can get Hughes back and go on a run.
A part of me thinks the Stars should stand pat. This seems like a team that has not played its best, but several players have recently come around. Lundquist seems to be turning the corner, Harley paired with Heiskanen is brilliant, and moving Johnston along Hintz and Robertson was good call. To me Stars should just stay
Also please do a story about Dominic Toninato and why the Jets love this guy so much? No one had ever heard of him but Winnipeg has made every effort next to Stanley to find him a role on this club. Is he someone’s cousin?
I understand the argument for the Bruins buying but I don't think they have the resources to do so without jeopardizing too many years of Pasta/McAvoy. If there's a guy they can sign and extend like Lindholm and Coyle I'd have more faith
I think the Bolts standing pat is enough. I think their roster, as constructed, is absolutely capable of coming out of the east. Especially as their injured D all trickle back into the lineup. Seattle wouldn't disappoint me if they went on a sell sell sell, with everyone on an expiring contract and even some with one more year were offered to build for the future. Also, talk someone into taking Grubauer's contract off their hands.
My teams are on a similar type path. Pens and kraken both really inconsistent. Pit (in a perfect world) sell gentz and resign him back as a F/A. Kraken have seemed very old hence my comfort with them possibly selling to get faster and build for the future.
Great overview Shannon. Next time just put the Wild in Sell and give GMBG a hint that he needs to sell everything he hasn't nailed down with his stupid NMC's
I would say florida is more of a "potential buyer" than anything else. They mainly need like 3rd line winger, maybe upgrade defense if possible, but don't really have assets or cap to do neither, at least from stuff they currently have. Only way they probably could do something is like trade guys like Lundell (or if they have some really promising juniors) to some pending UFAs which are currently "better", but that kinda feels stupid in the long run. Depends a lot how desperate they're for success this year I guess.
From a NY Ranger season ticket holder, you’ve got the Blueshirts in the correct category. The team through injury and underperformance by Igor are not 1 or 2 players away from winning. My feeling is that Rangers should try to make a deal for a 2nd/3rd line center with some term left on their contract. I’m would not be in the rental market.
Would love to see Detroit stand pat and all those guys that have better records changing up their team; cause there is something to be said for changes in personnel screwing with the mojo.
Why is it teams with virtually no cap space eg. vancouver are buying yet Winnipeg which had more cap space than most ends up fretting about making another move because of “ call ups” and Perfetti’s bonus? Is our accountant not very good?
You're not wrong ! As much as people like to shit on Miller or look at how we did in January the Rangers have a really good core. We would be on the market for a center, but it's not looking that good.
Playoff experience was tremendous for NJ last year and they need more. They aint winning the Cup this year but I want them to get in. The more this young team gains in terms of learning experiences, the better.
Coyle's been a top 6 forward for awhile in Minnesota, I'd expect him to be successful in the top 6 of Bawston. Zacha and the rest of their adventures at Center are the real surprise for me.
I think that old, hockey adage needs application regarding the Canucks as potential buyers. They have got to ensure that they don't overplay their hand and disrupt their chemistry when addressing the deadline.
The Rangers took a heavy hit in losing Chytil. That said, they should stand pat. No player under 26 years old should be traded for a rental, even a 1.5 year rental like Vatrano. Also, both Vatrano (two years ago) and Tarasenko (last year) could have stayed by accepting offers to fit into the Rangers cap space. They went to lousy tams for money. Rangers should only take them back if they come virtually for free. The Rangers young talent is too good to bother with mercenaries. If they can't go deep in the playoffs this year, so be it. But you don't trade the future. Rangers fans denigrate Kakko, but he is a super solid top 6 defensive forward. Not many teams in the NHL have a top line with all three guys putting up numbers. Someone has to watch their backs. Kappo is that guy and the Rangers trained him well. Since he hasn't put up big numbers, he will be a bargain as a RFA. Both Lafrenier and Kakko are among the team leaders in even strength goals the past two seasons. Rangers are at least 12-0 when Lafreniere scores; he gets no cheapies. Anyone who wants to move Miller doesn't know hockey. Farm (with Perrault) is untouchable. That leaves moving any of the bottom 6 or Jones (who has real offensive potential and should not be dealt, especially with Gustafsson leaving end of season). BTW: I wrote these sentiments on a FB thread posted by Hockey Writers and the comments were all liked by . . .Chris Drury. . .who was lurking on the site.
Good Video, as usual, Shannon - I basically agree with all of it. Even though I agree with you on The Islanders, I see them as Potential Buyers, because that is what Lou does. I agree with you about My Rangers & My Chicago Blackhawks
There's a school of thought with the Kings that trading got them into this mess. Not naming names, but we all know who...Why John Gibson is still in Anaheim is a big mystery to me. If he hits the block there'll be an instant bidding war. More to the point is that he has more trade value now than he will if the Ducks wait the season out. The risks of holding him: 1) he gets hurt, God forbid; 2) at year's end teams will have more time during the off-season to work with homegrown talent, and generally have more options; 3) he's three into a six-year contract, so if you want to move the whole contract, the value keeps decreasing the longer they wait. I did notice a footnote on Spotrac that he has a 10-team no trade clause in effect until 2026. I have no idea who those teams are, but I can hazard a guess... 😃...For the teams on that list, a circus trade could send a wave of prospects their way, and they could use the rest of the season as a training camp of sorts. Moving on...I don't see the case on a few teams on your "strong buyer" list, particularly Vancouver (Lindholm looks like it'll work out), and I don't know if I'd write off Calgary yet as gotta sell. Let's see if they were able to make a tune-up during the break first, but the porpoising going on in the Pacific right now, to me, makes them a stand pat for now...Arizona! Ah, geez!...If they go to the block now - again - it becomes more of the same and maybe breaks the fan trust gained back with a competitive year. You can only sell your kidneys but so many times until you die...That's it...Welcome home, Shannon. You survived California - or what Fox News likes to refer to as a dystopic liberal-controlled Hell with feminists, Zombie pothead surfers, homeless tents, street poop, and death waiting at every corner. Either they are complete liars, or you sir are a very good shot...
Detroit stands pat. Grand Rapids is on a roll right now, Berggren, Edvinsson, Johansson, Mazur, Cossa, Kasper are the future of the franchise and trading those guys for short term gain is very non-Yzerman. The Wings are good enough to make a playoff run anyway, whether they make it or not, we'll see.
@IceNinja2007 it's possible for sure. I just think with the run GR is having that maybe Yzerman keeps that team together to give them true pro hockey playoff experience as a team. Could really help Cossa too with his development, backstopping a good team. The only other possibility I see is if Sprong doesn't want to extend and I really hope that isn't the case, that guy has been a beast all season.
Every team needs a good housecleaning occasionally. I think Conroy has a good vision and a plan. He has valuable assets to trade and good young players to build upon. Best of all we have 3 really good goalies. Our retool is well under way.
Mostly agree but considering how close the wild card races are I think Detroit might want to be a little more aggressive. I think they have to explore options to upgrade the defense, but not at the expense of valuable future assets. It seems like a trade would have to send a D-man both ways, and whatever minor pieces required to make the deal. That said, they are dangling a forward(Berggren) for trade, so I don't know how that could result in an upgraded defense.
The only asset I think the Hawks have that they could trade away is cap space. I can see them being used for other teams’ deals or taking on bad contracts. The only guys that they might have been able to sell, they already resigned.
As a Rangers fan, I completely agree with Shannon. If they were still playing like they were at the start of the season, then yes put them in the should buy category but with how they've been playing recently potential buy is probably the better spot for them.
Yzerman will find a way to be a seller and still improve the wings .... like Bergen and picks for Chykryn. Some sorta longer term move, def no short term buys or sells.
The wings have a metric ton of assets in their system. I wouldn't be surprised to see Stevie Y sell off some of those assets for an experienced play off performer. But not until the off season. I dont think the wings brain trust has any expectations for the play offs this year other than having their core cut their teeth on play off hockey.
I get that the Jackets should sell if they can. The problem for all potential sellers is their rosters are loaded with underperforming players who won't bring a great return. Couple that with the fact this years draft isn't all that spectacular and most trades probably won't yield much in future assets. I can see moving any expiring contracts, but I'd wait a year on the others.
Torts was pretty clear. Any offer that is great should be considered and accepted. No throwaways, but nobody should think they're safe if the offer is good enough. Obviously Tips has a brand new contract. But if Edmonton says we need to see who we are and will send McDavid for Tippett 1:1 so they can show they're more than just McJesus, he could go. But on a serious note, he said Danny is obviously in charge, but the theme is going to be if the offer is great for the future, you take it. No matter what condition of team is.
If Van is going to add anything else I hope it’s more size upfront. When Garland is your biggest player against Boston I have a hard time seeing them getting too deep into a playoff run that becomes physical, tight checking with the whistles put away.
As a Wild fan, they should sell and sell hard. However they have term on guys that should be on the block. One player they don’t have signed that I look forward to seeing on a playoff 4th line is Duhaime. Someone should get that guy.
Philadelphias problem is that their number 1 goalie left due to some off ice issues. In Pittsburghs case, I can see a sell/buy type deal. Trade Jake for assets or else they’ll lose him for nothing and than take some of the picks/prospects they get for him and quickly turn around to trade those assets for a guy like Clayton Keller
I think flames should sell. Given Kuzmenko, hes probably looking for ice time and to prove himself after that steller rookie nhl season. Good trade chip along with all the other chips we got.
Thing about Colorado is they have Kovalenko coming over in March from the KHL where he is a point per game player. Also Landeskog is skating again and there is a chance he will play in playoffs. So they have a pipeline without even doing anything.
Buying does not always mean going for it. It can just as easily mean setting up for next season/the future. The Blues both sold and bought last year, and they will probably do the same again.
Rangers have gone all in the past two years and while it's worked, I think this is the best they've looked without rentals. Better they keep pat and not get burned down the line.
I don't think the Flames are going to be full on sellers. Tanev and Hanifin are probably gone sure but I don't think they sell many pieces that are still under contract and might recoup some roster players back. Conroy seems to have a plan and I don't feel like that plan is a complete rebuild. Nor do I think it should be. I think Conroy is planning on doing something very similar to what the Rangers did a couple of seasons ago, which could be fantastic if he plays his cards right.
The only issue I think Washington has is who to sell. I thought they did a good job last year at the trade deadline but this year the biggest name would be mantha and Lindgren. I guess they go for a kings ransom with a team in desperate need for a goaltender but are they willing to go that far. The other easy contracts to flip are team friendly deals that I don’t think will get them a lot.
I feel kinda the same way about St. Louis - after last year's sell-off, they extended a couple of the younger guys they expect to be the new "core" but I'm not sure there's too much that's gonna move the needle.

GO BOLTS!
Well, Sergachev's season is over
@@xlr0gd205 Feel so bad for Sergy. First game back and to have a freak injury like that. Sucks.
I struggle with where to place Pittsburgh, too. I think it depends on how they do in the month leading up to the trade deadline
Minny should definitely be selling, tho Guerin signing all our assets to long term extensions and Maroon getting hurt really affects our options
Minny isn't going to sell, we have no one worth selling. Fleury has a full NMC and if we traded Ek, the state of Minnesota would burn down
Rangers shouldn't buy heavily. Make some depth trades for the fourth line but the big prospects have to stay!
Good video and even better timing, Shannon.
The Avs need another goalie to take some of the load off of Georgiev.
Most of the teams on your sell-sell-sell list have assets they would like to move but that other teams won't want. And the players the buyers would want, the sellers wish to keep but may not be able too. Agree with you, it will be interesting to watch (to say the least).
Great video Shannon! Always appreciate your insight!!
So your saying we are in the Kessel run leading up to the playoffs lol
As a Wings/Panthers fan I love where the cats are and just want to see Kane back and doing Kane things.
wings and panthers fan? so ur a fraud
@@paveldatsyuk8268 you’re weird.
It's funny it seems the teams that make the fewest deadline trades win the cup. Usually better to always stand pat if the team is playing well
I put the Devils in the same boat as the Flyers and Islanders.
I liked this video, good reasoning and good categories. I hope Van plays the Avs in the WCF
Go Avs Go
A part of me thinks the Stars should stand pat.
I think Edmonton should be in Should Buy. They need an upgrade over Ceci and a Top 6 Forward.
Agreed. They should also address their goaltending.
Flyers definitely should move players regardless of where they are this year. Just build for next year PLZ Danny 🙏
Devils should soft buy. Goalie and Dman, try to save their season and get back into a playoff spot.
Said to my wife you'd struggle to place Penguins before it came out! Tough call there...
Has THG ever used two magnets of the same team on his boards when they seem evenly place-able in two separate categories?
Chicago has re-signed the only players they could have sold, and I like the signings. I think they stay put and begin to build.
I was going to say something similar. What do they have left to sell?
They can still sell
Just depends on the price
Who do you think Vegas could buy? And how? No cap space
Only thing the Stars need is another good defender or two to pair with Heiskanen.
My teams are on a similar type path. Pens and kraken both really inconsistent. Pit (in a perfect world) sell gentz and resign him back as a F/A. Kraken have seemed very old hence my comfort with them possibly selling to get faster and build for the future.
As an az fan I hope we keep a few good players
Alright, how much did Sportsnet pay THG to use their standings... Lol.
Excellent video as always!
3rd line winger and depth defenseman shouldn't cost much. They also have some cap space.
Leafs should sell
Would love to see Detroit stand pat and all those guys that have better records changing up their team; cause there is something to be said for changes in personnel screwing with the mojo.
Wings could use 1 more top 6 forward to go with Larks and Raymond
Why is it teams with virtually no cap space eg. vancouver are buying yet Winnipeg which had more cap space than most ends up fretting about making another move because of “ call ups” and Perfetti’s bonus? Is our accountant not very good?
You're not wrong ! As much as people like to shit on Miller or look at how we did in January the Rangers have a really good core. We would be on the market for a center, but it's not looking that good.
Dallas being in the buyers club just makes sense to me as well.
I'd like for the Stars to add another defenseman to solidify their blueline.
Spot on with 14:20 lol
I think that old, hockey adage needs application regarding the Canucks as potential buyers. They have got to ensure that they don't overplay their hand and disrupt their chemistry when addressing the deadline.
Think the cats will stand pat. They are pretty well stuck from past years of trading picks and prospects away.
I'd love a third line winger that is a reliable goal scorer, but I don't think they'll be making any changes.
Thanks for your post it should be on every site
Erik Johnson makes sense for Dallas and Vancouver. RHD
Good Video, as usual, Shannon - I basically agree with all of it. Even though I agree with you on The Islanders, I see them as Potential Buyers, because that is what Lou does. I agree with you about My Rangers & My Chicago Blackhawks
Given the current lineup, I don't think Chicago has anyone to sell. If anything, I can see them buying some bad contracts for picks.
I dont think the leafs can buy enough to make them a contender.
Not with 92k in Cap Space they can't 🤣🤣🤣
As a die hard rangers Shannon is one thousand percent correct. Time for the guys to step up show us what you are made of besides very little money
Wouldn’t be surprised if Colorado picked up a goaltender too. Fleury, Talbot, Jones, Blackwood are potentials
Fleury aint moving
Detroit stands pat. Grand Rapids is on a roll right now, Berggren, Edvinsson, Johansson, Mazur, Cossa, Kasper are the future of the franchise and trading those guys for short term gain is very non-Yzerman. The Wings are good enough to make a playoff run anyway, whether they make it or not, we'll see.
I could see Steve moving someone like Perron to a cup contender, so they can use his spot for Berggren.
Yzerman will b trading picks and prospects the team doesn't see fit , Wings prospects pool is LOADED LOADED LOADED
Oilers so good they don’t need to panic buy, Flames in the sell, sell, sell basement.
What a lovely video to listen to from my desk in Edmonton
Every team needs a good housecleaning occasionally. I think Conroy has a good vision and a plan. He has valuable assets to trade and good young players to build upon. Best of all we have 3 really good goalies. Our retool is well under way.
The Flames aren't tanking nor should they. Conroy has a plan and all Calgary needs is a re-tool. Let him cook.
I would put Edm in All In, going out in the WCF , may not be seen as a success, can upgrade goaltending and still need depth scoring
Penguins just came out swinging in the second half. Up 3-0 on jets in the third. Two PP goals from two different new PP units. Put us down for buyers!
Cup or bust baby, we’re bigger and grittier and healthy….im waiting for our first sunny parade 😊
I can't argue against the opinion that Boston should buy, but I worry about the cost.
Philadelphias problem is that their number 1 goalie left due to some
off ice issues.
In Pittsburghs case, I can see a sell/buy type deal. Trade Jake for assets or else they’ll lose him for nothing and than take some of the picks/prospects they get for him and quickly turn around to trade those assets for a guy like Clayton Keller
We need more depth on defense, who can slot in the top 4 as others have stated. If he does this, we have a chance at the cup
What do you think it would take to get Hanifin? Would like to see him play with the Sabres, though not sure he would agree to go
I feel like some level of clarification was needed on the Kuznetsov/Calgary thing cause i just bout had a heart attack lol
Think they need to look for a goaltender though.
Buying does not always mean going for it. It can just as easily mean setting up for next season/the future. The Blues both sold and bought last year, and they will probably do the same again.
My sabres will be sellers for my entire life.
I dont think the leafs can do enough to become a serious contender
We'll know a lot more about the Kings' plans after two to three weeks. The coaching change has been made. Will it make any difference is the question.
The Pens should try to do with Guentzel what Canucks did with Horvat. Use the assets acquired in the trade to go after someone that can help them now.
Detroit has a third goalie to sell but I would do it for a draft pick and leave the current lineup alone
THG trusts the Yzerplan.
Rangers have gone all in the past two years and while it's worked, I think this is the best they've looked without rentals. Better they keep pat and not get burned down the line.
Yes no money anyway
I don't think the Flames are going to be full on sellers. Tanev and Hanifin are probably gone sure but I don't think they sell many pieces that are still under contract and might recoup some roster players back.
Conroy seems to have a plan and I don't feel like that plan is a complete rebuild. Nor do I think it should be. I think Conroy is planning on doing something very similar to what the Rangers did a couple of seasons ago, which could be fantastic if he plays his cards right.
with Soucy having injuries this year, could Vancouver use second pair defenseman?
But which of these "buyer" teams have cap-space?
You find a team willing to take a "bad contract" and entice them with a pick (or more) for it, thus clearing space.
I thought CBJ should be more of a Potential Sellers, but I guess I'm more of a fan too.
15:03 Well Calgary got Kuzmenko, not Kuznetsov
Everyone beating Toronto
92k in Cap Space and this guy puts them at all in 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
