A sad but well researched piece. I saw several of Imogen’s films and always felt she was talented yet very much under rated. Such a short life of a beautiful lady, rest in peace.
One of the best "coverage" of anyones' life that I've ever looked a . I spent a lot of time with Immo when she was working at a theatre on the Sussex coast and we stayed in contact because we both found that we could talk to each other honestly without any strings attatched. I had just (stupidly and sadly) left my partner because of their fame and she was trapped in a world with everyone wanting her to be the Imogen of the screen. One or two details missing but nothing that wasn't "as it was". A sad epitaph of someone who wanted to be loved and to give love but found it hard to do or to be anything that wasn't a performance. She was lovely, a very dear soul xxx
@@MarkMahoney Thankyou!! One little anecdote: we were invited to open the Storrington Carnival and the owner of the Helecopter company at Shoreham said;"I'll take you in one of my choppers" We went to Shoreham, climbed into the thing "Ensrom" I seem to remember and up we went and as it rolled and turned, with the glass (perspex) bobble that went down and out of sight between your legs, the short flight made me so sick I bowed out of the afternoon and hitch-hiked back to Worthing finally accepting a lift on a Mods' scooter (and me the owner of a big blue throbbing Harley!!!) what a come-down but Imogen loved it and all for the best perhaps, she enjoyed the pilots company. You know what they say? Two's company etc. but once again, not a good choice.
She was the granddaughter of artist John Hassall whose 1908 poster "The Jolly Fisherman" known as "Skegness Is So Bracing" because of its message, may be his best remembered work. Back in 1972, there was a documentary made about her- her aunt clearly disapproved of her lifestyle and we saw various aspects of her life, and her being body-painted. Sadly, show business has a big downside to it and many people- a list too long to mention felt that their worth was not being shown courtesy of their screen persona. The press, in fact referred to Imogen as the "Countess of Cleavage" which she must have felt was very derogatory but this short film shows why this title was coined for her. Perhaps, that is the downside to be very beautiful in a business that may be glitzy on the surface but underneath is less than wholesome in many of its aspects. A very sad life story in so many ways.
It's far more dangerous to censor what the press can say.. The countess of cleavage is an endearing term of phrase.. There are much worse phrases to call someone.. And fabulous Imogen did not kill herself because of that... She suffered from depression... Remember her with happiness and love.. Each must remember in their own way... Others must not be Fascist in how the dead are remembered.. Imogen believed in free speech 💗🌻👍.. And kindness.... Please do not reply to me in an angry or dismissive way.... Live and let live
A Beautiful Tribute of the Life & Work of Imogen Hassall, and another great and tragic loss to the Industry, So many big Film stars and well known TV names, battle with depression, in private, and often tend to sadly die way to early, one of the most important skills as an Actor is to "Feel" emotions with a deep, passionate, intensity, which will lead to magnificent Performances on Screen & Stage. But that skill can lead unwittingly to extremely low times at sad moments in real life, and dugs and drinking makes it worse, My fellow Actor & Friend Richard Burton, being one example who struggled with Alcohol, at low times and sadly died aged 58 as a result, and Caroline Flack aged 40 more recently, two amazing, wonderful, extremely talented, and so very kind, Professionals, it was a joy to work with, and know, and who I will forever miss, I loved this tribute to Imogen, sadly I never got to work with her, but have watched a lot of her work, and enjoyed her performances, and a sad end for such a good and so Beautiful Actress.
A very sad loss and what a beautiful woman who I remember from Hammer films and Carry On in particular. Thank you for all the clips for I did not realise how many parts she had played.
So sad; such a waste of talent. Depression is a dreadful illness. I never knew she was a Woking girl by birth; her house is only a couple of miles away from my home. RIP beauty.
Such a beautiful young lady, such a tragic end to her life. Just so sad that she couldn’t find the love or help that she so desperately needed. Bless you Imogen, sleep well young angel ❤
A very well made and respectful piece. As an educated and talented actor it must be pretty soul destroying to be typecast and pidgeon holed based on your beauty. Suffocates your creative spirit. Also losing two children must leave such an emotional void. Thank you for this fine tribute to an underrated actress who never achieved the career she perhaps should have.
A really lovely person, had the pleasure of meeting her at a Marmalade concert in Newquay and she signed a photograph of herself that I still have to this day.

I have a unique Imogen story..in 1976 I was a fit young man working back stage at a large theatre on the south coast UK...Imogen was appearing in a play at the theatre for a weeks run....she became very friendly towards me, towards the end of the weeks show she commented that I was tall and muscular and could I go with her as her minder to an agent who owed her money ! I didn't think my then girlfriend would approve so I said I couldn't help her ! Back then without the Internet I never really knew who she was, just thought she was a traveling actress, she was very beautiful ! Was very saddened to hear she died...such a troubled soul.
What a fascinating story! You were a lucky man and the friendship could’ve gone a lot further! How close we can be to an opportunity to miss it so easily.
well done really good biography, i initially didn't recognise her name but i miss her now, very tragic her father dying on the way to see her debut on the stage, also looks so glamourous career but we don't see the stress and anxieties never mind the rivalries and jealousies
I remember her well, I was born in the late 50's and can remember seeing her in many roles either on tv or a film. I always thought she was stunning. What a tragic end to her life. so many of these actors seem to have very different degrees of mental health issues.
Imogen Hassall was so so beautiful looking back at this. Gorgeous. So tragic and what a loss she was. Even if I am 37, I never forget people like this and like to always look back and remember them for their wonderful qualities and happiness and enjoyment they gave us being able to watch them, but more importantly how tragic their own lives were away from their work and that they weren't able to find happiness because of personal struggles in life. It's lovely to remember Imogen for how beautiful she was here. Her death at 38 was the tragedy of a kind loving human being who in real life was lost and broken inside and that what you see on film isn't truly how someone feels. I personally want to remember Imogen particularly who is no longer with us but others also that are no longer here from these eras years ago and although it's the past, they're always in our thoughts and with us. We'll meet them again.
Nice informative film Mark I for one would have never have got to know about her if I had not watched this, she was truly stunning, those smiling eyes instantly recognisable, was only watching Carry On Loving (again) a few weeks back her part always stuck in my mind, now she is rightfully remembered by me and now not forgotten. (The David Jason book is a good read too)
Very sad story about her life. She died way too soon. She appeared in carry on loving even then she was vulnerable. She's a wonderful actress whose talent deserved more tv parts on the small screen. Rest in peace nice lady.
I just came across this on the Internet how sad I remember her when I was a lad thinking she was absolutely gorgeous, I have a saying in my life nothing is ever what it seems we always think everyone else is okay but quite often it’s just the opposite😢
It really is a sad story. She also lost two babies, one stillborn and another miscarriage. Her second husband Andrew Knox also died of a suspected suicide after boarding a ferry in Jersey he disappeared presumed lost at sea.
Superb insight. How difficult it is for some to like themselves. This beautiful lady did not manage it. Others are luckier in that they are able to survive long enough to reach that goal. A good partner made it possible for many. RIP.

Had a crush on her in carry on Loving watched it earlier today i looked to see how many of the carry on team we're still with us didn't realise she passed so young and the circumstances heartbreaking would be a Liar if i said there weren't a Few tears RIP Imogen
She died just a week before John Lennon. The poor girl obviously needed help for her mental health. Alas, back then, you were just told to 'pull yourself together,' or 'snap out of it.' She certainly was a beautiful woman.
The pub was called the Crooked Billet, I was there the night Jenny came in but don't remember an argument, it was her local. I can understand how she felt, every man in the pub looked at her (me included) as an object, I was 17 at the time. Most men were scared and intimidated by her, all I ever said was HI and that was it.I was shocked when I heard the news though.
An all too common story, fame doesn't always mean happiness. Her presence on film made a scene glow, unfortunately the entertainment industry has a habit of putting out the lights with devastating effect.
Hassall was married to actor Kenneth Ives, and before they were married, they had a daughter called Melanie Ives Hassall, who died four days after being born in 1972. With her second husband she lost a second child by miscarriage
Carry on Loving 🌹Jenny Grubb her family when Terry Scott turns up 😂, I just love the scene and with Terry on the sofa. Zip up and down. I'm going to be sad to watch this as I knew she died young and one of my fav Carry Ons. I see you got Carry on film locations too so watch after. ( With narrating this I think the word Imogen or She is more appropriate than Hassall most of the time, as we know it's about her ) thanks for posting this though good work.
Very sad what happened to her she was very lonely she was looking for love all her life in the end it was drink and drugs she was found dead in bed with the phone still in her hand she would ring people she trusted for help and to talk about her depression on the day she died again she had pills and drinks but people stopped taking her calls this was the end nobody came there was no help very sad...
I only ever knew her from Carry on Loving. Such a sad ending. The 1970’s was a bad time for women in movies imo . They were always portrayed especially in British comedies of the time as sex objects for the male lead. If she have had proper support she could of gone on to have a decent career. RIP
Such a beautiful lady, her dad would have been so proud of her. The saying at the end is very fitting of today. Freedom is possible but is a constant struggle. Someone has visited her grave and is on yt. I don't know how to do links.
I have every Norman Wisdom film and remember her well. She was stunning but you never mentioned she carried a baby for nine months then lost that baby four days after giving birth. That and a later miscarriage must have played heavily on her mental health. R.I.P young lady x.

Poor girl, so sad.
What a shocking end to a beautiful actress i remember her from my childhood always thought she had a great flair for comedy acting...
Yessss think Imogen would have been a good side kick for one of the 70s great sitcoms
What a beautiful sexy woman and what a tragic ending. She reminds me of Sally Geeson from Bless this house.
I only ever knew her from Carry on Loving. Such a sad ending. The 1970’s was a bad time for women in movies imo . They were always portrayed especially in British comedies of the time as sex objects for the male lead. If she have had proper support she could of gone on to have a decent career. RIP
And they fought ferociously and stood on each others heads to be portrayed as those sex objects

Yes, so very true. There were and still are advantages to be seen as a sex object - particularly for women, of course.
A very beautiful woman. Her looks remind me of the late American actress and model Cynthia Myers.
How Sad beautiful and talented x
She really was gorgeous.
