Finally, someone is teaching guitar playing in the context of playing good music!!! It's not just about theory or technique or memorization. It's about having fun :)

The entire “practice” mindset is more a means to tell many interested in playing that they are “less than”, that they need to be somehow “punished” through endless repetition until somebody else decides that they are finally “worthy” of holding a guitar. Too much emphasis on this repetition without a chance to breathe, and that’s when the guitar gets clicked back inside the case.

you are awesome, I wish I had you as a teacher when I was 15. I'm 62 now still trying to "get it" You inspired me, hopefully a young player latches on to your teachings and takes it forward to play like Clapton, Hendrix and other greats, to usher in a new century of creative musicial masters.

When I bought my guitar, I didn't really want to play other people songs so badly. Enough if I could mingle around the fretboard with the right combination of chords and scales. Thank you for your explanation. It really helps me to understand better.

This is epic. im learning guitar in my early fifties. im doing what i consider an exceptional course, and i have learned the 5 pentatonic patterns, all minor and major root note locations, adding in the blues notes for blues scales, the full diatonic scales and all the modes. This video is eye opening because i often run my patterns alone without any backing tracks, which is something i have started adding, and i think just the backing tracks have made a big difference in my ability to be melodic and musical. i love your idea of being "self generating" alternating between chords and solo phrases. This will help with my timely transition to chords as well. i can't wait to get home and start using this! Thanks a bunch. You are an exceptional teacher.

Yes! Timing has ALWAYS been my downfall! Second downfall is loosing my place in the progression. We as musicians like to "get lost" in the music, but the REAL musicians are never lost, even when they seem to be in their own world! TY for making these vids! I'm 62, Wish I had RUclips when I was in my teens!

Learning to sing the head will self-generate the tune and get the ball rolling with a strong rhythm guitar. Playing in time with voice synced to the guitar. Taking singing lessons to help expedite. Key to the Highway for me presently.
This is not on directly related to your topic but it stresses practicing scales vs getting up and putting out a jam song in time and making music.

My left hand pinky finger and ring finger are kinda weakish, so I run the hell out of the scales, I mean I spend hours a day to build up accuracy, strength and speed, especially focusing on those two weak fingers. (I want to use all four fingers, not three). I reward myself by noodling around with some songs and backing tracks. So I do about 90% practice, 10% playing songs. When my pinky finger and ring finger get stronger and I gain more confidence in using them, that will change. I can put on my makeup with my left hand now. 😄
