    When in San Antonio, go to Schilo's for German food and root beer. They brew their own root beer.

    *_#3 The River Walk_*
    Even though all maps of the River Walk including the one @1:15 show how far it extends, many *_1st time_* visitors associate it with the central loop only, especially the upper run with all the tourist bars jammed side by side and on top of each other. So I'm very glad you highlighted the King William area to the south and the Pearl District to the north. You quickly ref'd San Fernando Cathedral which is a must see as well as Market Square. If one has never been to a mercado in Mexico, Market Square would be very fun. Yes, you honestly kind of slighted the touristy Tex-Mex joints on the River Walk but even though Mi Tierra across from Market Square is well known by tourists, it is a high recommendation and I give it many thumbs up. Loved by tourists and locals alike. Great resto, bar, bakery, overall experience. Really excellent video today. 👍

      Yeah, I love how the River Walk expansion project included lots more of downtown, including the northern part which is actually really close to my high school alma mater, located near the Pearl District. If you're a local and I tell you I attended an all-girls' Catholic high school, you'll probably immediately know what high school I'm talking about. Anyway, Market Square is boss and I have lots of fond memories of my family and I going down there during Fiesta; I'd also recommend La Villita because it's so pretty and charming and I loved going there as a kid. Also, I know the Central Library gets ribbed a lot for being the "Big Enchilada", but I really like it and find it a local treasure, especially since I love libraries in the first place and this one has a really awesome microfiche archive of the Light and Express-News.

    Excellent presentation. When we first moved to Texas, we settled in San Antonio. We live closer to Dallas now, but we love to visit San Antonio. We made sure all our out of town guests saw the beautiful sites. I would add going to the ‘Mercado.’

    Well done sir, glad to see people enjoying the history and highly recommending it! The zoo and museums ( Institute of Texan Culture, The Witte, SAMA, The McNay, Children's Doseum, Blue Star and Botanical Gardens) are very nice family friendly activities. Sea World and Six Flags also for theme park fun. St Mary's Strip, Blue Star Complex, The Pearl, Downtown and The "Gay strip" on main street for bar fun. Food here is much more than Tex-Mex but Tex-Mex here is the best in the country! Thoroughly enjoyed your highlights!!!

    Being a resident for the last 40 years, I can tell you that there is more to the city than just downtown. One of the major drawbacks is you will need a car to get around (the only public transportation we have is the VIA bus system). We do have Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Sea World amusement parks. The worlds tallest boots located at Northstar Shopping Mall. we are 2 hours away from the beach in Corpus Christi. 90 minutes from Austin and about 30 minutes from New Braunfels. During Christmastime, the people in the City of Windcrest, decorate their houses. Many go to the extremes and they usually have some type of yearly theme. Brauning and Calaveras Lake are cosing by for outdoo activies (as well as Canyon and Medina Lake). For sports, we of course have the San Antonio Spurs, Missions baseball (AAA), and UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio) plays in the FBS Division 1 (C-USA).

    We spent Spring Break in San Antonio last year and we loved it! 2 other things I'd add to the list of "must do" items are the Menger Hotel dinner ghost tour (I took my 11 year-old and she's still talking about it great it was!), and the Natural Bridge Cavern tour. It's about a 15 minute ride there from the Alamo area, and well worth the trip.

    The term "ice house" came from the Lone Star Ice Company that used to sell ice for ice boxes, hence you went to the "ice house". They began carrying certain food on the side (milk, eggs, ice cream, sodas, beer). Since it was the place that everyone went to get ice for their homes, and they would congregate there, the company began putting tables and chairs for the customers to spend more time (and money) while there. With the advent of refrigerators, there was no need to get ice except for ice chests, but they were still the gathering spot. Every neighborhood had one (or two) favorite ice houses that everyone visited. In San Antonio and South Texas, even the 7-11s were called "ice houses".

      But apparently if you go to an out building in the complex that contains a small scale model of what it looked like back in the day, you can listen in on a 30-minute audio tour done by none other than Phil Collins, who donated a whole bunch of Alamo memorabilia (and later became an honorary Texan).

    Uber is really a good idea. Unlike Austin, Houston, or Dallas the downtown streets don't always run in regular blocks. Many are also one way, so getting turned around (lost) is especially easy. Also, many aren't aware how big the city is. The metro area has 2.5 million official citizens. There are countless unofficial.

      I need to check your Austin vid, then! Galveston is cool in some ways, not so great in others. The seawall area is a tourist-party snake pit much of the time and the hotels raise their rates exorbitantly during festival times. But the downtown Strand district offers some nicer sights and eateries. Plus the Elissa! (tall ship).

    Hey man, glad to see your in the Lone Star State! Hope ya' come visit Austin! Yeah, it's overpriced, pretentious and dripping with hipsters (sadly), but the history is great...the Texas Capitol is awesome, Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park is always about 70 degrees even in 110 degree weather, the food is fantastic, you can even still go to the top of the Univ. of Texas tower. Circuit of the Americas has F1 racing in Oct, there's SXSW, the ACL festival...a snot ton to do. And no, I don't work for the Chamber of Commerce, just a guy who appreciates the area, especially in mid April when the bluebonnets and wildflowers simply explode everywhere! Happy travels and Via Con Dios, brother!

      It's a bad@$$ town, for sure. There is some extremist politics that show up here at time, which can be annoying to anyone who is anywhere close to moderate or centrist, but one learns to ignore that silliness. Doesn't cancel out the overwhelming positives. What's even better is the entire central Texas area, there is so much around here, no wonder we've been blowing up in population since 2000, a boom that never ends. And it's pretty cool we're only about 45 minutes from San Antonio, too. Can't imagine anywhere in Texas that's a better place to be.....

    Why are you not allowed to take pics inside the Alemo?

    • @bxr782
      @bxr782 6 лет назад

      When I was at the Alamo eons ago, I was told that the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the ones who own and operate the Alamo, didn't want anyone to take pictures of the inside in deference to the fallen Texan heroes. But I remember going to the gift shop they have in site and seeing pictures of the inside of the Alamo for sale!

    When in San Antonio, drink Lone Star beer. Lone Star is good in San Antonio and crap everywhere else. It does not travel well.

    If you like Mexican food, one of the best places is Don Pedro's on the south side. Or if you don't think you can go that far you could go to MI Tiaras or La Margherita. Downtown. Most Mexican food downtown is awful, But MI Tiaras and La margarita are the exception.
