Sure we all missed this wonderful character afterwards. But it definitely was the right thing to do! He was the youngest and should have been in his home town going to the movies, buying ice cream and dating his first girlfriend at that age. Instead he witnessed + kept the record of deaths and amputations and cases of war neurosis and all that without completely falling apart himself. Thank goodness he was the first one to go home, if it had been for me he should have been allowed to leave that hell hole before Trapper did (I'm not counting Henry Blake here... for obvious reasons). As a viewer, I'm of course glad we got to watch Radqr "turn into a grown man" a bit longer, yet the lighthearted experiences of any man's twenties will never find their way to him. Like many reallife veterans who left before the end of the war, he had serious reason to get back home which has nothing to do with a lighthearted youth (his uncle died, do Radar had to take over as the male family leader). It's good they at least let the character get back home earlier because the most precious chapter of being young was just skipped in countless young veterans lives anyway.

Radar and Hawkeye were my favorites. Radar carried a sweet gentle vibration to a show filled with Hurt and dying during a war.Hawkeye was the show showing a variety of emotions in the face of adversity. All great acting.
Also the part where Radar is escorted back by the MPs from Tokyo/Seoul after he wins the Soldier of the Month contest (I think that’s the name?) and he’s still drunk. I laughed so hard.
I think the thing most people remember Radar for was when he spoke at the same time as Sherman. Sherman was giving orders and Radar was giving a verbal report at the same time.
...which episode was it that Radar wakes up and kisses Major Houlihan as she was trying to wake him to make a phone call??? That was an all time classic comedy scene...
My favorite Radar episode was when the Korean women said he was the father of her baby. I also loved his armpit sandwich's. I used to pretend doing that with my kid's when they were little. Funny thing was, they liked them and would ask for more.
I liked Radar more in the Col. Blake years.. He smoked, drank, fooled around and was a bit more sneakier...In the Col. Potter years, they turned him into a grape NeHi drinking wimpy kid...

That John Wayne quote from Radar always bugged me, because it's from a movie that didn't come out until 1963 (Radar was in Korea in the early 1950's). But then, a lot of things bugged me about Radar...
Radar developed a "bad" case of decency. He didn't smoke or drink and he was a virgin. There's no shame in that at all. In fact, I found it quite refreshing.
I read somewhere that the Mash cast said Mr Burghoff was difficult to get along with. Well, I might have been difficult to get along with too if my co-workers constantly made fun of my height. There are so very many episodes where the writers and other actors have written so-called comedy into the sketch that revolves around belittling Gary Burghoff's character because of his height. This is nothing short of continual bullying and workplace harassment I'm surprised I never saw the other actors with black eyes courtesy of Radar.
