As always Corbin, thanks for keeping us updated on all things Hyundai, Kia and Genesis Evs. Though I love my 2022 I5 Limited, like a lot of us I am getting tired of the trips to the dealer. At the dealer I bought my I5 from, it takes over a month for me to get a service appointment and I called just after seeing this video. First available appointment was January 3rd. Called another dealer who said middle of December.
In October my 12 volt started to die (like a lot of us) and when I called the dealer they said I could bring it in for them to test it the following week, but made no promises about when they could replace it. I ended up buying the AGM Weize (works great thanks again Corbin) and installing it myself. I did reach out to customer care and they sent me a check for the battery.

I was at the dealership this morning for an already-scheduled regular maintenance, and when I checked in they mentioned the recall and offered to do it at the same time. I have fortunately not had any ICCU issues yet. All total I was there for about 2 1/2 hours, and the recall was completed successfully.

What exactly did they do? It sound's like it's a faulty ICCU (which is a large piece of hardware the size of a large King Size Pillow) is determined defective now,
is not fixed via software, but a hardware change, that sound's rather involved, taking hours ????

Welcome to the club. I've had two different Ioniqs since December 2021 and this has been a 9 month ritual with the hope that this is the last time. Hopefully they will eventually have a final fix, but at the same time I love these cars so much that this being the only flaw to me feels like a blessing given the crapshoot that comes with buying 1st generation cars.

Just last week, I had my 2023 Ioniq5 12V battery replaced under warranty because it wouldn't hold a charge anymore after I used the compressor that was included with the car to inflate a slow leaking tire. They also did a recall that had something to do with Level 2 charging. I guess I'll have to take it in again. Nice that Hyundai is staying on top of this, but it sure would be nice if they could program those ICCUs over the air...

Hi, I saw this recall a few days ago on X and as you said X also stated Hyundai would not be sending out the recall until January. When I read that I just thought I'd wait. After watching your video I opened the app. and tried to schedule the recall. The first date it gave me was February 5 2025. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow. Thanks for a great video. I really love my Ioniq 5 and it's the first EV for me. I've had no issues thus far, but it is a 2024 and I've only had it since Sept. I'm 70 and my dad used to talk about horse and buggies and now I"m driving an electric car.

What a coincidence. I just got my '22 I5 SEL back from the dealer after having the Iccu replaced. They had it 2 months and tried several different fixes (replace charger door!) before the final fix. Hyundai national got involved and worked with the dealer to find the final solution. I was given a brand new Sonata loaner and was reimbursed by national for the week's rental cost before they gave me the loaner. The problem announced itself when I tried to charge with my level 2 home charger. It would begin to charge and then 'click' the charging would halt. My local service dept was mostly unfamiliar with EV repairs, it seemed, so they depended on national to steer them to the solution. This was the first problem the car had given me in over 2 years. Hats off to national for making what could have been a real pain in ass into a mostly painless process. If this happens to your I5, go straight to national and request that they monitor the repair process. The dealer was Phillips Hyundai in Bradley, IL.

Corbin, thank you for staying on top all our issues and presenting solutions. Really appreciate it. I just did the recall. In my case, there were no codes and they did the software update. My car was needing jumpstart over the past 2-3 weeks and the voltage went around 9.7V. Once it is running, voltage held around 13.5-14.3. Do you know how the 12V is charged while the car is being driven? Is that done by ICCU? I asked this to the service people at the dealership and they were throwing jumbo mumbo at me. So basically they are clueless. reason is, this past weekend i jumpstarted the car and drove it for 60 miles. I tried starting it back up after 15 minutes and the car was completely dead.

I put a BMS on the OEM lead-acid 12-volt battery. It cycles once per day. 1) This is not normal. No wonder it does not last the typical 5 years as a typical “starting” lead-acid battery would. A deed-cycle battery instead of a starting battery would be a better fit for the 12-volt battery. 2) Regardless, something is draining this 12-volt battery. Therefore, I’d be real surprised if the ICCU charging is the root cause.

I just finished an eight service adventure with my 22 Ionic 5 RWD. It started with my inability to slow charge my Ionic5. It would charge DC (level 3) no problem but level 1 and 2 charging would not work. It would start the charge for about 10 seconds and then announce the charge "terminated". I took the car into my local Hyundai dealer 3 times over 3 weeks then, on my fourth visit they said they needed the vehicle on site so they could investigate further using external (national) resources. I was given a loaner. Finally following 6 weeks of work I was informed that the ICCU had to be replaced and this would require an addition 2 weeks of work and testing. I got my Ionic 5 back in full working order.

Does it appear in your opinion that if the dealership's determine your IONIQ 5 (either 2022 or 2023 model year) has some type of ICCU defect, it's more likely now,
your getting a entirely new ICCU , right away , or do you still face an uphill battle with long drawn out software patches first?

The blacked out display isn't a 12v issue. The root cause for a couple I've seen reported were caused by a failure to apply thermal gel to the heatsink on the gpu. One instance had a plastic film that was supposed to be removed, but wasn't, preventing proper cooling of the chip leading to periodic screen blackouts which recovered after the chip cooled enough.

I did get the car home in slow mode. Took the dealership 3 weeks to get a replacement iccu. Was given a Ford Mustang Mach E on day one until the car was ready. My only issue with Genesis UK was they were not proactive in telling us about how long they would need the car to repair it. All fixed now, I’m assuming they put the updated iccu in.

I can't believe it. We took our 2022 SEL in for the recall 14th December. Today (26th Jan) the ICCU failed. So angry. First tried taking to an Autozone to replace the battery, wasted $250 there because within 2 minutes of driving away the same warnings all started again. Given the cold weather and my car's 2.75 year age, I was sure it was just a dead battery, the fact a fresh battery immediately died proves it must be the apparently software fixed ICCU. Now my car is stuck there and the service garage is 40 miles away and closed on Sundays anyway, so I'll have to get another tow tomorrow..... sigh

I'm in the US, and just had my recall handled today (2024 Limited). It took two hours. They said the time depended on their network bandwidth to download the software fix. The repair order showed that they did not have to replace the ICCU (quantity zero for part 36400-1XAA0-QQH, ICCU ASSY). They ordered a high-voltage fuse (375F2-GI040-QQH), which I assume I'll have to come back to have replaced.
My service advisor gave me two tips: don't park the car with less than 20% battery unless you start charging it right away (so that the 12V battery doesn't go dead), and also to turn the headlights on during the daytime. This drains the 12V battery, which triggers the drive battery to recharge it and keep it healthy.
He also warned against car washes that clean the undercarriage, because that's where the big battery lives. He says it's well-protected, but still... Great advice!

What a coinkidink!! I just got home from dropping off my '24 Ioniq 5 for that recall. I didn't get any notice of it. I was there for a previous recall on the tire inflator kit that they didn't get replaced due to our hurricanes. They said they could start right away on the ICCU work but might not finish it today since it was early afternoon when I dropped off the car. I think they jumped on it right away because they were a little embarrassed at having dropped the ball on the inflator recall. 🤫

I didn't go in asking for it, but they told me I was "on the list." It would take years to replace them all with your car being in the shop for a while possibly getting something it doesn't need while they up the prices of everything to pay for such a recall.

My ICCU experience with my '23 Ioniq 5 - both software updates done, the second just two weeks ago with no indication anything was wrong with the ICCU itself. Then, just last week the dreaded "Check Electrical System" warning. Fortuneately I was close to home and was able to limp home. But the OEM 12v battery was DEA. Charger would not bring it back to life, so a new battery was necessary in order to get the car out of the garage. A tow to the dealer and a replacement for the ICCU followed. All seems good now, although I haven't observed the new 12v being charged. I sure hope this is the end of this.

Have to say the last ICCU fix was simple and brief, did it during a tire rotation. Hopefully this one will be the same. I've had no problems with my 2023 Ioniq 5 12V battery so far.

My I5 2023 wouldn't get charged after fixing recalled. I had to go back to dealer and had them check and ICCU needed to be replaced. I need to wait until the end of month to get fix and no loaner available. Maybe y next problem for this car is 12V

Interestingly enough, I did the same as many, got the first update done. Within weeks the next recall came out. I needed to drive over 200 miles for work and charged at a charge point. It puts out over 40kw, and sure enough a day later I ended up doing a remote climate start. My Wallbox reports the car abruptly disconnecting charging and the whole thing is dead.
Read an article saying if charging above 40kw it may destroy the iccu. If this is even remotely true it’s ridiculous. I believe these cars support 800v charging. How even for my 2023 is this still a problem when this goes back YEARS. Anyway, now waiting for the part that no one knows when it’ll arrive.

Well Corbin, got my ICCU recall software update today, I hope this fixes it!
It took just a few hours, including the shuttle service back home, and back to Hyundai.
I have had no issues with my 2023 Ioniq 5 SEL AWD, and the time before I had them put an AGM battery in. I figured that that would be the best for Midwest climates.
I didn’t wanna chance it with that lead acid battery, especially since the car was manufactured in late 2022 🤷🏻 🤞

I have a ‘23 IONIQ 5 with dead batteries and two tows to the dealership. They said the ICCU software was fine but apparently the software the dealer has doesn’t do a “deep analysis”. Anyways, Hyundai corporate said thousands of people have this issue and one of the dealerships I talked to said they would never buy an EV - odd, since they sell them. I am being told the charger port needs to be replaced and it is on a 2 week national back order. This is my first and last Hyundai - they don’t stand behind their vehicles and their dealers clearly don’t like EV’s.

It seems like every 6 months that I have scheduled service due with my GV60 there is yet again another recall. The upside is that Genesis still picks up my car and leaves me a loaner at my convenience so no real skin off my nose at least while I still have warranty coverage. I suspect I will be cutting the car loose at that point if they can't get their recalls under control. Last service visit I asked my service advisor about any resolution to the AC charge port overheating issue, nope, apparently Hyundai still working on it. Really its been 2 years. I kind of feel like they are tossing out questionably useful software band aids for clearly significant hardware problems and hoping it buys they more time to kick the can further down the road.

    • @trainingtheworld5093

Ioniq 5 owner here. Sadly I think you’re right. They’re just giving band aids to cover up serious problems. We are in a hot country (Australia) and we can’t AC charge at full current as the car will overheat. 4kW AC charging is embarrassing.

Saw the recall on my new ioniq 6 (purchased October 30, 2024). Scheduled a service time and then waited almost 4 hours for the update to be completed. I can't beleive that a software update can take almost 4 hours but the dealer said they were haveing truouble and it just takes time. With over the air updates now a regular event what a flubber f***k having to wait in a dealers crapper waiting room. Yup my 2023 I5 is not quite 2 years old and the ICCU failed on the highway just a week after the "dead 12v battery" was replaced. Also, the dealer service person admitted that my problem with occasional errors in shifting could be due to the faulty ICCU (turn knob to R and it occasionally decides to go to D).

Do you have the Hyundai recall pdf that would list the new ICCU version number? I need that before going into my dealer. Last time when I went in for the VCMS L2 charging fix, they claimed there was no update available and marked the campaign as completed. I had to raise hell as the software version was still the old one. They finally took me in the back and showed me on their tablet where it popped up in auto mode but supposedly the tech was trained to ignore and go into manual mode and did not see anything. Basically had to show the tech and service manager how to do the update lol.

Hi, I got my UK version Model Year 2025 (MY25) IONIQ 5 N Line S AWD last week. It’s great. With a rear windscreen wiper!
I bought a magnetic sunglasses holder and a charging port lights blocker from you on Etsy. The sunglasses holder is great, but the item to hide the lights during charging does not (a) cover the newly-designed charger lights, and (b) won’t fit anywhere when you close the charge door… it’s just not the right shape for the new design. MY25 items from your on-line shop will need to be amended/redesigned to fit. Thought you’d like to know.

I’ve had absolutely no problems with my 2022 Ioniq 5 Limited until last week. (I purchased the car in June 2020.) I was taking my wife to the hospital for surgery when I received the notice to check the car’s electrical system. The car soon went into turtle mode but I was able to get it back home and use our other car for the hospital trip. I’ve made an appointment with my Hyundai dealer for Monday to have the car fixed. Sure hope this is the last time we have to deal with this issue. Good luck to everyone and, based on my experience, I wouldn’t wait to have your cars serviced.
Update 12/5: I had the car towed to the dealer on the morning of 12/2 and was told they would diagnose the problem by the end of day. I decided not to wait and the dealer provided an Uber ride home. I received a call later saying that the ICCU unit needed to be replaced, so I arranged for another Uber ride back to the dealer and they provided a loaner car. The ICCU unit was shipped to the dealer on 12/4 and the recall was completed that afternoon. I was expecting a much longer wait for the part to arrive. Great service from CardinaleWay Hyundai in Glendora California.
