Scotty, I am the owner of the Camry with the oil leak and "surface rust". We had the Toyota engineer look at the rust on the axle and his solution was to treat it with baking soda and water.
Surprise, the rust is still there. We have dealt with Toyota's customer service and they also refused to do anything about the rust.
Just wanted to update you on this.

IDK, if it is wise to disagree with Toyota engineer, but you certainly have better chance to remove that rust using muriatic acid first, and then neutralize it with baking soda AFTER, to prevent further corrosion.
Now, what was his solution for oil leak, again?

Did have nice red leather seats, am radio, and manual transmission. A hoot to drive and easy to work on. Or, if you prefer a truck, as many today do; how about a 1949 International Harvester KB-2 (that's a 3/4 ton pickup). Comes complete with 70 hp flathead 6 cylinder engine, manual transmission, manual steering, no power brakes, drum brakes, crank out windshield, no A/C, no radio (wasn't even an option), vacuum operated windshield wipers, 6 volt battery, non adjustable bench seat, no power windows, no power door locks, manual floor mounted starter pedal, drivers side rear view mirror only. Could reach a speed of just over 50 mph on level ground. It's best feature is that it was built like a tank such that I wacked it with a sledge hammer and it didn't even scratch it. Try that with a modern day truck. I miss those 2 vehicles and wish I still had them. Now I'm forced to ride around in modern sissy vehicles with their A/C, power seats, stereos, etc.

In some cases that might be closer to the truth. I forger the exact name of the container & car cargo ship that headed into a massive storm a year or so back but the ship was carrying Toyota cars and that ship did get swamped out it partially sank in shoals on purpose the captain headed the ship onto a shoal where it was pumped out and repaired. Not too long ago I took my sister car shopping while her husband was overseas on business and we looked at Toyota cars here locally where I live. I found two cars where the carpeting was wet behind the front seats. The dealer said the lot detailers left the back windows down. But that did not explain the faint smell of sea water. After all I am a Navy sailor and know still remember what sea water smells like.

Some cars older than 2015 have it, however: usually the more high end ones.

    • @timothykeith1367

The made in Mexico U.S. spec Fiat 500 is only rated at 38 mpg. A somewhat larger and more powerful car with a crumple zone can get the same 38 mpg. The lighter EU spec 500 can get as much as 50 mpg. People buy tiny cars expecting to save gasoline, but that was not the case with the U.S. spec Fiat 500. The most unsafe car sold in the U.S. is the Mitsubishi Mirage, but at least it gets pretty good fuel economy.

Also your phone battery degrading isn't comparable to cars. For phones people fully charge them every day and discharge extremely low, almost all the way down. For cars most start with limitations on max charge and it's unlikely you'll dump and recharge it completely as often as your phone. That would mean traveling 200 miles a day or more. LiFeP batteries are indeed less energy dense and heavier as you say but they don’t exhibit thermal runaway combustion, don’t spontaneously combust. That’s why Tesla is spending money to replace the older batteries in cars that are still under warranty with more expensive new batteries - THEY ARE TRYING TO AVOID ACCIDENTS AND LITIGATION.

@@brianvogt8125 You apparently don’t understand technology life cycles and the war between China and the US.
There’s enormous capital invested in research and setup of proprietary high tech car production lines and factories. Car companies have to go with the best technologies they have within a certain timeframe or their competitors will steal their designs, beat them to deploying those technologies. Once you have the factories you must sell a certain number of cars to recoup costs, make enough profit to fund more research, keep the company in good shape. Otherwise you stand to lose all your research costs and fall behind your competitors… China. I have been testing LiFeP batteries and they’re very heavy and huge. They came out after LiION batteries so they needed more testing and refinement to even work as car batteries. Even now they’re barely practical, but they’re much safer than LiION. It’s also the software in the charging controllers that make a big difference aside from the quality of individual LiION battery suppliers.
Finally, if Tesla didn’t jump in, jump ahead, and win the initial EV war, China would own the entire market and Mandarin would be the lingua Franca of the EV world. EV is NOT ACTUALLY ABOUT CARS or “SAVING THE PLANET”, it’s part of WW3 BETWEEN CHINA and THE WEST.
