What genres do you guys generally enjoy reading? I don't usually branch outside of my typical go-to genres 😂
My computer translates "너의 여름에 내가 닿을게" as "I'll Reach Your Summer", which I think is a more accurate translation.
Also, WARNING! I went back and re-read the plot summary on Kyobo's website for 가짜 모범생 (Fake Model Student) after reading the book, and their plot summary gives away so much info! I hate spoilers, so I tend to skim the plot summaries VERY quickly just to make sure that it seems like something that would appeal to me, and thankfully I generally forget most of the details after skimming, as I did here. But don't read the plot summary of this book on Kyobo unless you want basically the whole story given away!

Hi, Madison. Kudos to you for keeping up with language learning in your busy life. I've read only one of 이꽃님's works, 세계를 건너 너에게 갈게, and I absolutely loved it!
Honestly I think YA novels are one of the best ways to learn a language. It familiarizes you with the natural way people actually speak in that language.
A small recommendation - I have a feeling you might like 연의 편지 by 조현아. It was orginially a Naver Webtoon that has been published into a book. It's a short, sweet coming-of-age story accompanied by lovely art :) I first read it on Naver and then went on to buy a copy because I loved the art & story. Let me know if you end up grabbing it ☺

Ooh thanks for the recommendation! Definitely adding that to my TBR list!

My favorite genre to read is fantasy but I find fantasy books a little too hard in my target languages so instead I have been reading a lot of murder mysteries and middle grade. I recently read The Thursday Murder Club in Farsi and thought it was really fast and engaging. I also learned a bunch of cool idioms from that book.

I feel like fantasy books also tend to be on the longer side, which just adds to the difficulty of getting through one in a target language, not to mention all that fantastical vocabulary. It's like the "final boss" of reading in a second language 😂
I feel like mysteries are a uniting genre that almost anyone can enjoy -- plus they tend to pull you in and make you want to finish the story even if your brain is tired

In English and French, I tend to prefer fantasy. However, I've found that reading in various languages does kind of force me to expand to different genres, and that's been super fun! For Korean I've been picking up some mystery focused books lately, which I don't usually gravitate towards, but I've actually come to really enjoy those.
I am also in the process of reading 세계를 건너 너에게 갈게 right now, I've been loving it and should finish it before the new year

Hi, I love that book! It's a solid choice. Hope you finish it soon😄
If you liked it, you'd probably enjoy some of her other works too. Another recommendation is a YA novel called 훌훌 by 문경민.

Everyone is talking about how much they loved 세계를 건너 너에게 갈게 and now I'm wishing I brought it to the States with me to read 👀 haha can't wait to start it when I go back!

Omg that book sounds soooo depressing lol. I am very flexible on genres but the ones I don’t usually like (cough romance) I am pretty inflexible on 😂 hope you enjoy your time home!

Yeah, I don't like romance once it gets the least bit "spicy", as they say. But I loooove a good romantic yearning.
I think that's why I tend to like Korean romantic webtoons. There are a few ones that are clearly labeled as spicy (that I don't read lol), but a lot of them focus primarily on that yearning-centered pre-dating situation that I love so much, and then once the main characters are actually together they often become more of side characters and other characters start their pre-dating yearning arc 😂 perfect for me!

I can go for pretty much any genre.. they all have their season of time to enjoy them. But, I haven't allowed myself to watch anime in a while... I love anime and just tv shows and movies in general but they just don't get me as many new words in a foreign language as books or short stories do...so I rarely watch them these days. Of course anime isn't just one genre... and I have my favorite genres even within anime.
But yeah just today I watched the latest Makoto Shinkai movie (in Japanese of course). If you don't know who he is he is like the Hayao Miyazaki of this current generation so all Japanese people know who he is (not just anime fans). His latest movie Suzume came out 2 years ago. I've seen almost all of his movies in the past 10 years. I didn't realize Suzume was on Netflix and so on a whim I finally watched it. I was blown away! I cannot believe I denied myself that for two years - it was a good mix of modern historical events, fantasy, and a bit of comedy too. It's def. going to be a classic for all of Japan because of the topics it deals with. Also, as with any Makoto Shinkai movie, the drawing style is soo beautiful!
So yeah I can go for pretty much any genre or a mixture of genres in the same work.

I find that I tend to enjoy a much larger swathe of genres in films/dramas than I do in books... maybe because good acting and filmography can do a lot of heavy lifting even if the story isn't exactly to my taste, and I can't skim in Korean, whereas I can fast forward through a dull part of a movie/drama episode pretty easily

I read pretty much anything in any of my languages! I often end up reading books recommended in social media with knowing as little as possible about them, so that I can be surprised 😂
I recently read the novelization of "君の名は" and a random book "そして、バトンは渡された", which where both fine books but weren't for me 😅 the former I had seen the movie (which is "Your name") and I preferred the movie I think 🤔

    • @SomedayKorean
      @SomedayKorean  Месяц назад +1

I feel like I've seen a trailer for "Your Name" somewhere.. was it on Netflix?
Yeah, I also like to be surprised by stories, but that contradicts with my desire to know if the genre will appeal to me (like if I can tell from the brief description of the book that it's a depressing story, I tend to not go for it, although I somehow skimmed the plot summary of the Fake Model Student story and still bought it, so maybe my system is flawed lol) I need to figure out a place where I can see what the genre of the book is without having anything spoiled to me, but I'm not sure where to find that kind of info 🤔

I can't read books only in korean, i can read just a few webtoon kn korean but in my level intermediate, i'm not advanced yet, i can't understand korean news yet.
And i love thriller, horror, comedy.
i read in hangul korean 물귀신 water demon and i can understand 90% it's really intermediate, in my level, not too easy and not too hard and i'm proud i can understand.

Nice! I don't mind thrillers, but if horror gets too gruesome/gory I don't enjoy it personally.

@@SomedayKorean OK, fir example the webtoon 물귀신 is horror but not gory, it's about a child, his friend fell in water but he saw a water demon and didn't save him and then he becomes to be scared of water, even if he's an adult at university he still saw the ghost of his friend then his friend and his mother died...lol it's not too scary, we saw he is just traumatized, not gory scene at all.
And i was surprised i can understand 95% of it in korean.
