i couldn't figure out why i wasn't understanding the sign language. I just realized its BSL not ASL
Ohh That Sucks. Couldnt we have only one Sign Language.
henry pendle couldn't we all use one language? Better start learning mandarin then. Its harder than it seems. BSL and ASL are two completely different languages with their own cultures and developed independently from each other and naturally like any other oral language. Each city has their own dialects and its no surprise every country has a different sign language.
Avbitten Same
It took me a while to realize that as well.

IM LEARNING SIGN LANGUAGE... I'M NOT DEAF...BUT I LOVE THE LANGUAGE💓
Elaine Bird nice. Keep going.👆👆👆👍👍

Sign language should be learned by everyone no one knows who will be deaf especially those who disliked hearing aids or if the hearing aids dont work for them.
@@YaeGalvus yeah sign language should be taught in schools
I'm not deaf or learning sign language, I just love your content
Me too
I want to but I don't know how to start!

Just got here through my recommended right now
Your mum and dad are amazing people. I recently started to learn to sign. I tried to get my 13-year-old to learn to sign, but she doesn't want to learn for me. I am partially deaf, and it would mean the world to me. How can I make my daughter understand how important it is for me.
frenchie girl in the usa I'm so sorry. Tell her that you love her so much and that if you were to go fully deaf you don't want to lose communication with her, and that it is a possibility. Good luck. If worst comes to worst you could higher an interpreter, good luck!
Thanks for the suggestion.
frenchie girl in the usa My kid is way younger, but these are my ideas anyway :
Tell her that it's an investment in your relationship. With sign language, your relationship will be way better because you can talk to each other on a completely different, high quality level. And it's a cool thing to know a new language! You don't have to shout. You can talk to each other through windows, over a big room, via Skype or videophones. Find out all the cool, fun, practical things about sign language and talk about those with your kid.
Get people in her life to learn and use sign language, make it easy to do and a natural part of every day life. And make her meet you halfway - don't take all the responsibility for your communication. It's a two way street. She has to sign at least some if you are to get what she's saying. Make less effort to speak and lip read and more effort to sign. Shift the balance. Make new habits for your communication.
There's apps you can use to learn signs. Look them up together, depending on what you're talking about at the moment. Watch RUclips videos with sign language and captions. Maybe with someone cool, good looking, a role model or about something she's interested in? Music videos are a fun gateway into sign language. Worked for me, at least.
Challenge, compete, be silly, use games, reward with something fun, be serious, mix it up. And don't ever give up. She'll get around eventually, if you keep signing and don't make it easy for her to refuse to sign.
make her watch Switched At Birth, it made me start to learn lol.
If she doesn't understand sighn write down how important it is for you to communicate point to it then sign. Then she will understand and the sighns you want her to learn write down the sighn then point and sighn so she learns what you want her to do.
I think it's sad when a parent of a deaf child refuses to learn sign. I know someone who is profoundly deaf and has been since birth, but his parents absolutely refused to learn and they forced him to use his voice until he was 13.
He has an easy time communicating with hearing people, but it's a shame he had to go through that. He's in his 20s and his parents still refuse to learn sign (I mean ASL, btw)
I have friends who are deaf so I took ASL to be able to communicate better and my state only made ASL a foreign language in 2015 even though it's been around for hundreds of years.
I’m honestly shocked that parents are allowed to just refuse to learn sign language if their child/ren are deaf. It’s one thing if the child could communicate with a device like an iPad, but just refusing to learn how to communicate with your child… 💔💔💔
I love watching BSL to catch the differences in ASL. Some signs are the same, like "communicate" and "think". But then there's signs that are the same but mean something different. The BSL sign for "scared" is the same ASL sign for "color".
I have a new found respect for the deaf. I always have respected the impaired, visual and audible, but this opens a new prospective into it.
Thank you! I was born deaf, but my family never learned to communicate with me so I had to go through years of speech therapy to make it easier for them. I think your mom is wonderful for learning BSL!
Maigen White why didn't they ever try to learn to sign? I have never heard of a family not learning to sign when they have a deaf child
Absolutely fantastic video Jazzy! You and your mum shared some really insightful stuff on parenting a deaf child - we're going to share this video on our Facebook and Twitter channels on Friday :-)
National Deaf Children's Society Aw thank you very much NDCS, this means a lot to me! ✨

I admire your mom. I use asl when it's convient for me and those around me. My mom says shes too old and doesn't understand it and she won't learn. I took 3 asl classes but because i don't practise much it's harder.

Video please cool
i dont think it that hard if you do focus a little bit and think about how important sign lanauge is to deaf people
Wow background lights are beautiful!
The biggest thing I love about this is as someone studying ASL it's cool to see the similarities between ASL and BSL just like American English and British English and where it differs and trying to think about what, culturally, made people decide to do the Sign the way you do. All Sign Language is so beautiful to me, and I hope eventually to learn more than just ASL
im glad that your mom is willingly learn sign language for you. because not a lot of mom does learn sign language when they have deaf babies.they force them to speak and so on. Im really proud of your mom
I sat here for thirty seconds bewildered by the fact that I had no idea what either of them were signing. I was terrified my two years of sign language classes were suddenly all forgotten. I got chills of anxiety. That's not the sign for "month", that's not the sign for "did", oh my god oh my GOD why is this not making SENSE--oh. This is BSL. Not American Sign Language. That took me long enough to figure out.
omg same
Oh, no... The fact that you said the sign for DID scares me a bit... You sure you didn't learn SEE instead??
Couldn't you tell by the mum's accent?
@@gabriela1490 maybe
I watch so many deaf youtubers now simply because I want to learn bsl! I don’t know anyone who is deaf but now I feel ready to communicate with someone who was deaf and it makes me feel better to know i could include someone who might otherwise be excluded because like you said so many people don’t sign. Xxxx
It was emotional story which has same story of my life too. I am also hard of hearing aids and didn't learn sign language. But like your mom did something to communicate with you. Same thing my mom tried her best to make me speak without showing sign language. I started speaking at the age of 6 while I started wearing hearing aids at the age of 2. In school I had very tough life, studying with hearing kids and I am only one who has deafness in my school which made me very suffer in school. Didn't get proper support from no one but got managed to succeed my studies with my help of my mom and my older sister. They spent lot of time to study and teach me.!i did think of getting cochlear implant for my hearing but I couldn't since doctors have adviced me not to do so because I am not fully deaf otherwise it will ruin my current hearing. Today I am finally a a Bachelor degree holder. All thanks to my family who is stood me throughout my life. I agreed your point that finding job is very difficult and I do finding hard to get job to be independent. Thinking of future is very difficult because we don't know how will we manage our life support who is with us. Thanks for sharing your life story and God blessing you with good family. Always keeping smiling
Such a touching story. Finding job is very difficult for deaf people as there are lots of people out there don't want deaf people to work for them because of the communication which is annoying.
You always keeping smiling too x
One of my Favourite Videos! Your mum and you are so beautiful xx
Aww thank you Blake, love you xx
Blake Holden , I am deaf. My email is joao-serra@live.com.pt
My son (18months) is deaf, severe - profound in his left ear and moderate to severe in his right, sensory neural/conductive loss. He is a candidate for cochlear implants. I was very worried about making the decision towards cochlear implants but after watching your videos I am so much more confident about it :) I am also learning sign language from a profoundly deaf lady and hoping to do my level one next year. I love learning sign :)
But if he still has hearing u gotta remeber they have higher advantages hearing aids but. Imant is something good down the road when. It get really bad
Hint: *turn on subtitles for those of you who didn’t understand.*
I am deaf and have 2 cochlear implants. I only hear with one for now. I know how you feel on what you've been through during your life being deaf. I went through the same thing. You are an amazing and strong person and you have inspired me a lot. Thank you, Jazmine! I speak with ASL, (American Sign Language) and I am loving it. :) Love your videos!
8:31 mel go OFF! love it
your mom rocks! and I love her sweater! hugs from California!
Mother and daughter bond is even more powerful. GOOD!
This video really made me want to learn sign. I was so ignorant to the reasons why sign would help me and people around me. Thank you so much for sharing your stories.
My mom said I was a mean baby I basically never smiled to anybody but my parents. I love doing that. But now I just smile when somebody compliments me.
What a beautiful family!!! You are both wonderful inside and out !!

You have a very very similar story to me about finding out how you was deaf, it's so nice to hear someone going through something similar and getting so far.I am a dancer, i'd like to get far in that too.
Anyways it's good to hear that that i'm not the only one who went through that. :) xx

Im so happy your mum signs because i care for deaf children and their parents never tried to sign
beautyoffreedom x What? If you have a deaf kid you SHOULD learn sign language so that you can communicate with them.
I wish I had taken ASL growing up in school in America. It should 100% be mandatory. I've met several deaf people through my job, but luckily they all had interpreters with them. One day a deaf woman came in without her interpreter, and I wrote down my communication with her, and took her where she needed to go. The night before, I looked up how to sign 'thank you,' so I could say that to her at least! I still want to learn ASL, but it's hard to properly learn it online. I think I'll look into local adult learning classes! Love your channel, Jasmine! Keep posting awesome videos!! Makes me want to learn sign language (even if it's not BSL) even more!
I’m not deaf, I haven’t learn sign language before or know anyone who’s deaf but I still absolutely love ur content! I love ur mam being in ur videos too! 💗
So interesting! I love your channel, I sign ASL so I have to use CC on your videos but they're awesome all the same
Leah Sauter Ooo sounds awesome! Thank you x
I've seen your videos before and probably commented on some of them, but I forgot to subscribe! So thus, you have a new subscriber! :)
This video is interesting because it is fabulous there were resources for your mother and you such as a teacher of the deaf coming to your house and teaching you both sign language. I can relate to that as a Deaf person because there were resources for my parents to have in order to learn sign language among other things.
It was your decision to get a cochlear implant and I believe that the choice to get a cochlear implant should always be made by the deaf person, not the deaf person's parents. This is because parents of a deaf child should really learn sign language first as that will most definitely allow the deaf child to learn how to communicate much earlier than a hearing child would!
Your mom said it was shocking when she found out you were Deaf because when one has not ever met a d/Deaf person, one hasn't really comprehended the impact of hearing loss. But thankfully, like I mentioned earlier your mother was able to quickly find a way to communicate with you. Not only that, your parents were able to teach Holly how to sign too as that is extremely important! I believe the whole family should learn sign language for the sake of communication with the deaf family member. My whole family knows sign language and I am fortunate this is the case! I've noticed that if the Deaf person is the oldest of his/her siblings, the rest of the siblings will know sign language due to being exposed to sign language all their life. But if the Deaf person is the youngest, the older siblings may not know sign language due to not being exposed to it when they were younger.
I know you both were using BSL. I am an expert in ASL and know a few signs from a few sign languages of other countries. I did see that you made a video in which you taught how to sign the alphabet and colors in BSL and I think you should make more videos to teach more BSL in a topical format.
Once again, it was an excellent video, but one thing, Jazzy - you played too much with your hair and that was a big distraction as I was trying to pick up on the signs your mother was using when she talked about you. Ha.
Hahah but thank you for subscribing by the way!
I'm glad that you think the video is interesting. I definitely agree, the whole family should learn sign language to communicate with the deaf family member. I just don't understand why people don't make an effort to learn sign language, how can they all communicate?! Forcing the deaf family member to speak is not good. Aww thank you, I will do other BSL videos in the future. I'm more than happy to teach my viewers BSL :)
Oops, I will try to stop playing on my next videos. Sorry if this was distracting to you!
You are welcome, Jazzy!
One simple reason why parents of a deaf child do not make an effort to learn sign language for the sake of effective communication is because they are still going through the grieving process due to coming to the realization that their child is not going to be like them in terms of being able to hear. Another reason is that parents may be trying to make their child just like them so that child can be "normal" by having the child get a cochlear implant, have the child go through speech therapy, etc. Yet, another reason is that sadly, many parents do NOT do their research on the most effective methods to communicate with their deaf child and instead, depend on the help and advice of doctors who absolutely know nothing about the Deaf Culture/Community. :(
Now, when it comes to family members outside the immediate family circle, many of them don't make the effort to learn sign language because of several reasons. One could be that they don't bother to find resources to learn the language. They don't really have an excuse in this present day and age due to the Internet having plenty of FREE online resources. Another reason is that they may have misconceptions about Deaf people where they think they can't function in society without being able to hear.
I am glad you are more than happy to teach your viewers/subscribers BSL. Please make videos for BSL signs regarding animals, foods, transportation, and emotions (not necessarily in that order). :)
Hello
I have only recently discovered your videos and love them. I have recently completed BSL level1 and started level 2 a few weeks ago. Its something i have always wanted to learn. Watching your videos have been so great for more practice and learning. I think basic bsl should be taught in all schools and hope it happens one day.
It is great to see your lovely mum can sign with you. :)

Hiya my mummy and daddy are deaf too and I know full BSL xxxx love ur videos Jazzy ❤️❤️🤟
This highlights a big issue I have currently with my Sister in Law (and my brother) about how they want to raise my deaf (well, hard of hearing) niece. They want her to go to a mainstream school (that's not something I have an issue with as long as that school does have that support system available) but they don't want her to learn sign language (or not yet anyway - she'll be two in August and has had hearing aids since about 8mths I think but they only need to be inserted for like the hour or so a day so she gets used to them but doesn't fully rely on them). The reason they don't want to is because they would like her to focus more so on essentially being mainstream and it frustrates me because her learning sign language from now (or a younger age at any rate) is better than when she might be like 8 or 10 or even older and can say No. (Unless she reaches a point where she actually really needs it but then it may be harder to sort of learn it.) Deafness is genetic in my family and although I don't know how far back it goes I do know that there was my Grandad and then my dad and his brother (my uncle) then there's my older (half)brother - same dad; different mum - and then me... my hearing was the worst one from the youngest age and my hearing was also detected earlier... then there's my little niece who is my brothers daughter and she's the one who actually has the worst hearing from the youngest age now.... her parents want all this mainstream-y stuff because of my brothers experiences apparently he got teased and/or bullied a fair bit and to this day (he is 35 now I think) he still won't wear his hearing aids although at this point he absolutely should. I don't know sign language because I grew up in a small town (it might be different by now if we had stayed in the city I was born) and I so wish I did just because of the fact that hearing loss clearly runs rampant in our family and if I ever have a child there is probably a VERY strong chance they too will have a hearing loss... it would've been nice to learn when I was younger rather than as an adult trying to choose to learn it. But my experience at school I may have been teased once or twice but it wasn't something where I felt totally resentful about it (well I may have in that very moment but not something I've held onto through to today). It just bugs me that what they choose not to do (now/yet) because of my brothers experience is what could actually be kind of a negative start for my niece. Like I'd love to see them be proactive about it (Like how your mum said she wanted to be one step ahead of you in learning sign language because she would have to teach you - she didn't wait for you to need it she just done it). I just hope they'll change their mind!
some people think that signs in America are the same as signs everywhere else. nope. I learned how to sign 30 years ago and ASL is so different from BSL, I am hearing not Deaf and I think both ASL and BSL are beautiful.
First video i saw of you!!!! you and your mother are so beautifull😍😍
this color suits you so good you look stunning (as you always do)
I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm learning BSL and I'm glad I finally found a deaf British youtuber 💞
Great work Jazzy! You sign teach learning English but I sign learning still deaf and hearing my left ear. I was born still deaf won't hear. But my mum signed English language. But i was little in at school and for school years. And I just sign learning for staff at Job Centre Australia from Albury. I got my cochlear from Melbourne for was two years old being surgery for hear my ear. Just cried but really loud still lots sound. I'm not sure what's your born birth? My birth 7/4/1999 years ago. 😊 I am very proud to you. 😊 I still talking speech can't understand but feelings very doesn't know for help for my speech. 😊
I'm deaf too but my parents never learned sign language for me. I got a cochlear implant at the age of 3 and now I can hear and speak pretty good, which is confusing sometimes because I don't feel like a deaf person at all. Expect when I take my implants out at night or for showering.
