I just happened onto your RUclips channel yesterday when I was searching for crumb quilt blocks. Today I’ve been exploring some of your other videos. I have tons of scraps in totes and bags and who knows what. I had lots of my own and then I got lots more from a friend who passed away and from my mom from downsizing her to a much smaller house. I’m a hoarder and can’t throw out anything good! I’m finding lots of awesome ideas from your videos. Thank you!
Welcome! I’m happy my videos have been helpful for you. I love the challenge of grabbing a handful of scraps and finding a way to use all of them. Happy Scrapping!!!
I used to use those shoe box containers. The lids never stay on. I started buying the large canisters with screw on lids. Turned on their side they serve the same purpose. Now they sell rectangular containers with snap lock lids. I know you probably won’t even read this comment but I try to comment whenever I can. That helps to keep you at the top.
I read every comment that RUclips shows me in the app. They don’t show me if you comment under your own comment or someone else’s comment. So just “new” comments. Thank you for leaving a comment. You’re absolutely correct. The lids are horrible. I’ve changed what I use too. I’ve been using the plastic locker containers from the Dollar Tree but I’ve being overrun by my scraps. I either need more or larger containers. 🤣
You are Fantastic. Easy to listen to and i learn a lot. I was searching RUclips to get re-motivated to start quilting again but didn't want to purchase any more fabric, but use what I have. And WoLa - There You Are! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I have a hard time spending money on new fabric when I have so much here already waiting to be used. Welcome back to the fun and crazy world of quilting!
Brilliant idea to use shoe boxes as the sides don’t slope inwards. Also shoe boxes are a good length without being too wide. I think I might have turned OCD over fabric scraps. I can use 1.5” x 1.5” so I have really nothing to throw out!!! It’s fun. Love your Channel. From Scotland
It was several years ago. It’s the start of a series. I think It went from this into the crumb series. Then of course string blocks. String blocks are great for scraps.
I just want you to know I was searching and searching for something to watch on RUclips. I think I just stumbled onto your videos. But now I’m hooked!!!!! I love anything scrappy!!!!!! I watch RUclips videos on my tv but I have to go my iPad to leave a comment. I find myself watching your videos over and over. That’s what I do when I find something I like on tv.
I'm so happy you stumbled across my channel. I'm very grateful you took the extra steps to leave a comment, I do something very similar. I watch videos on my little tablet but leaving comments can be a bit challenging so I have to use my phone to leave a comment. As you can guess I LOVE scrappy too. I will actually cut up yardage into small bits just to have some more scraps to play with lol. I'll be looking forward to chatting with again. Happy Scrapping!
RsIslandCrafts - Robin I have some yardage and many many fat quarters. I’m afraid to cut them and I mess up. Also I’ve been sick some and lost the desire to sit at my machine. What do you to get motivated again.
Tilas8 Im sorry you’ve been sick. It’s been a rough year for everyone. I actually lost my mojo for about a month. I’ve been forcing myself to sew a bit here and there because I know if I don’t then I won’t sew for months. This time I’ve been making crumb blocks. Just mindless sewing scraps together. I woke up yesterday and had my mojo back. Woohoo!! If you really don’t feel like sewing then maybe organizing your fabric and scraps. I know when I started seriously organizing my scraps I had to do a lot of ironing first. These type of things take time but no real creativity which is usually what I need.
Good to know that you only receive notifications if it’s a new comment. I think you do not need bigger containers. I think you need to make leaders with the scraps as they become scraps. Once the leaders (or spacers when you chain piece) get to be a certain size toss them in a basket. Eventually that can be a charity quilt.
I’ve tried leaders and enders and It just doesn’t work for me. My friend tried them this past winter and she was happily surprised to see how fast the blocks added up.
thank you for these videos. I love the way you break it down, and give an assignment. I have really struggled with getting motivated these days. I am hoping this helps.
Deanna Cenzano Thank you!! I struggle when a tutorial gives too much all at once. I thought it would be fun to break things down into doable chunks. We didn't collect all these scraps in a day and we won't be able to use them up quickly either. I don't know about everyone else but I swear my scraps multiply when I close the sewing room door lol.
Thank you for this tutorial! My pile of scraps are accumulating at a frightening rate even though I am a beginner! I will take note of your ideas for storage and projects.
Thanks Brenda! I told my daughter I won't be doing that again this year because she opened everything up the second day. I guess I should give her points for making it to the second day. She just can’t help herself. She needs to know what is in every package even if it’s not hers 😂.
jj b Welcome! Just when I think I cleaned out the last bin of scraps I find another container tucked away somewhere lol. There’s always “the next to tackle” in my craft room. Lol
Love this series, what a lofty goal to tackle the scrap bin... thank you for the inspiration, I am also still trying to recover from the dreaded Irma... where are you? Did you get thru it ok.. I still panic when the wind blows
juliana giles Scrap management is a never ending job lol. I live in Cape Coral not far from where Irma made landfall. Thankfully we only had minor damage. Soffit, siding, some shingles, nothing too big. How did you guys do? I’ve lived here for 35 years so the wind doesn’t bother me too much. It’s the lightening that scares me.
My problem with my scraps is that I have some that are not good enough quality to be used in a quilt. I used them when I started quilting, or for things for my puppy. I guess I should separate out the pieces that are top quality and keep them separate. Thanks for the ideas!!
petmom ful A couple years ago I decided to be brave and start tackling my scrap bins. My many, many scrap bins. Like you I had some less quality fabric when I started quilting. I also felt the need to save EVERY little spec of fabric thinking I would use it for something because I didn’t want to waste the money I spent on that fabric. It was hard but I tossed lots of “bad” fabric and pieces that were really too small to be useful. It took awhile to get things cleaned out but I don’t feel smothered by my scraps anymore. Thanks for stopping by! Happy scrapping!!
I completely agree. While I love mixing scraps I do prefer to keep my holiday scraps separate. Plus, when I want to make a Halloween project I want to easily grab those scraps.
Love this clip. I have 2 x 60 litre tubs of scraps which feels too overwhelming to deal with, so I just start filling another tub 😢 the ONLY scrap thats sorted are my 3/4"-1" wide bits that I use on my rag rugs. Everything else is tubbed. Tomorrow Im going to pull a tub out and start sorting as you've done ... love your vids. Im always learning something xxx
Thank you so much! I used to do the same thing. I found It less overwhelming to set a time limit. Maybe there’s a movie you want to watch or some of my videos 😉. Then you grab a few handfuls of scraps and process them. Give them a good press and then cut them to the sizes you like to work with. Even if you only have the time to work on your scraps for an hour a week those tubs will empty faster than you ever realized. Once I had the majority of my scraps processed I started using a small plastic bin for my new scraps. When It is full I go ahead and cut those scraps up. That way I’m not drowning in scraps. Rag rugs sound like a great way to use up bunches of scraps.
@@rsislandcrafts I liked the idea you showed on your clip of one small bin to process at a time. Makes so much sense! I pulled one of my huge tubs out this morning, and sorted fabrics into categories ... kids, florals, batiks etc. That took me 4 hours to do, now there are little piles of fabulousness waiting to be ironed and cut all over my sofa 😍 Looks like another WIP in the making 😊 and yes I've watched a bunch of your videos ... starting to wonder if Im a stalker lol 😉😊
Barryna Nahu How exciting! Some people might be intimidated by those piles of fabrics but I find It a bit exciting. Sometimes just getting started on a project like this is exciting and motivating. Once I had my scraps processed and sorted I found that I use them much more often.
@@rsislandcrafts Well hubby came in from work, and let out a huge sigh seeing my piles ... but such is life. Happy wife ~ happy life 🥰 Im a third way through the tub. Im putting them in ziplock bags as I cut using the same system as you have....right down to crumbs 👍🏽👌🏼never ever thought I be happy working with my scraps! Thank you for the much needed inspiration ♡
Poor hubby. I was wondering about him. He’ll be happy when he hears how much money you’re saving by organizing and using your scraps. Good plan about the ziploc baggies. That was my first system and one I still use for certain things. Anything that keeps your scraps organized and allows you to actually use them is the perfect system.
Im trying to train myself to cut all my stash into different size blocks and strips. I bought an accuquilt cutter for this. Bough all the square dyes, 2.5 inch, 3.5 inch, HST, Its going to take a long time to do, but Im trying. Good luck to you as well. Then making some scrap quilts.
I started cutting my scraps with my Go! Cutter. Great way to clean out a ton of scraps quickly. After a day of ironing of course lol. Now I’m alternating using the Go! Cutter and cutting strips from 1”-5” wide. It’s definitely a process but afterwards it’s so much easier to work from the scraps. So far using a small plastic bin to hold my scraps and cutting them when it’s full has been working pretty well for me. Happy scrapping!!
I really wanted that accuquilt too. But I’ve tried my friends and my hands and back was hurting. And it was just too expensive for me but I did invest in a large stripology ruler. I have yet to learn how to use it.
The accuquilt cutter is sooo much easier than rotary cutting. I bought it for later years if my hands start hurting. But now use it for scrap cutting and piece quilting.
Tilas8 If I didn’t get an amazing deal and won many free dies I wouldn’t have It either. If I had to buy It now I seriously doubt I would. I haven’t done any research but the sizzik looks fun. It’s supposed to use their dies and other dies I think. You would need to do some research because I could have things mixed up. I don’t use my go cutter very often. I find that I’m not that type of quilter. It is nice for some scrap cutting but some quilt stores let you rent theirs (in store) so that would be less expensive. I do like the big strip cutter ruler but I haven’t bought one yet.
🤣 No. It’s actually much better now than It was a couple years ago. I’ve emptied those shoe boxes three times now. There’s always more scraps to be added.
I have two large storeage totes of scraps. I have friends who don;t use theirs so they give them to me. I know its a lot of work for me to get them organized but its worth it. I see it as free fabric for me.
Mary Carpenter I love the gift of scraps from other quilters. How exciting!! You get to play with fabrics and colors you may not have chosen yourself. The scraps may be free but you definitely earn them because you have to iron, trim, and organize them before you can use them.
Mary Carpenter Excellent question! I don’t consider those “scraps” . I have separate containers for squares, triangles, circles, etc. I was thinking this morning that I need to put up a video showing how I store those types of fabric pieces. This series is mostly for those chunks of fabrics that we tend to jam in a container and don’t use. My scrap bin had become 3 large baskets. All 3 of my adult children (18, 25, 28) moved out together so I finally had a craft room. When I started moving into my new craft room I knew I needed to do something with all my bins of leftover scraps and throwing them out wasn’t an option for me. I thought maybe some other quilters might be in a similar situation so I decided to make these videos so we can all help each other out.
I didn’t realize how much scraps I had because I used several small containers. When one was full I just started another. When I started organizing I kept finding more and more containers lol.

This way when I have any scraps they go into the drawer of that colour, But I need to do something because, they are filling up lol
I always tell anyone who will listen that I will gladly take their scraps. Many quilters are happy to pass on their scraps because they don't want to deal with them either. Good news for us, right? My stash started as fabric for purses and kid's clothing so my stash consists of lots of novelty type fabric. Makes it hard to separate into colors. It sounds like you need to make some color quilts. Have you heard of the RUclips channel Mom and Pop Quilts? Right now Mom (Laura-Lynn) is making a quilt a month from her color sorted scrap bins. Even though they are one color quilts since they are made from scraps they are beautiful and have depth and movement. Happy Scrapping!!
