Noble laureates, admissions and teaching in Stanford University: Talk with Prof Krishna Saraswat-2

In the second part of my interview with Prof Krishna Saraswat, a renowned professor in the Electrical Engineering Department of Stanford University and an authority on the subject of semi-conductors, we discussed the secrets of the university churning so many noble laureates and issues relating to the admissions, financial aids and teaching methodologies. In the appointments or admissions though Stanford doesn’t have a written gender policy yet all efforts are made to give due representation to women. At least there is no discriminatory attitude towards women. The admission in various courses of the university is not very easy because together with quantitative achievement of the candidates emphasis is placed on possession of leadership qualities as well. Various departments have evolved their own teaching methodologies but rote learning and one way communication process is not encouraged.

The federal government is the largest source of funding for basic science R&D, but the business sector is the largest source for applied R&D. The higher education sector is the largest performer of basic science R&D in the United States 🇺🇸!

@@Razdanvinodk Correct! The federal funding is I have been told liberally available to the private and public universities both. However, the professors are required to formulate proposals and convince the efficacy thereof to the authorities. I have been informed that universities work closely with the industries. Stanford had a dynamic provost by name of Frederick Terman during fifties and sixties ( 1955-1965) who is credited with encouraging numerous start ups by providing land and even funding on liberal terms! The advent and rise of Silicon Valley is attributed to his dynamic leadership. Prof Saraswat told me that it was only after Terman that Stanford rose to the level of a famous world class university!

भारत की आजादी के बाद भारत में अभी तक ऐसे विश्वविद्यालय हमारी सरकार क्यों नहीं बना सकी जिसपर हम गर्व कर सके ? भारत अभी तक फॉलोअर की भूमिका में ही नजर आती है नेतृत्व वाली भूमिका में क्यों नहीं नजर आती !
भारत में PHED की डिग्री तो वे लोग भी ले लेते हैं जिनमे ईमानदारी से 10 th स्तर तक की भी जानकारी नहीं होती, बहुत ही शर्म की बात है।

Gender को प्रेफ़्रेंस देने की नीति कोर्ट ने ख़ारिज कर दिया था। परंतु यहाँ के विश्वविद्यालय बहुलता का सम्मान करते हैं एवं आरक्षण शब्द की बजाय affirmative action की बात करते हैं । वैसे भी यहाँ हमारी तरह से वर्ण व्यवस्था नहीं रही है ।लेकिन काले लोगों के पुरखे भयंकर ग़ुलामी के शिकार रहे हैं । न भूलें कि बहुत बाद में आकर यह ग़ुलामी प्रथा ख़त्म हुई और काले लोगों को गोरों की तरह के अधिकार मिले। परंतु शिक्षा के मामले में काले लोग जिन्हें अफ्रीकी-अमेरिकी कहा जाता है काफ़ी पीछे रह गए हैं । 🌹🌹🌹
