Norfolk Southern actually has *22* official heritage units - nearly everyone seems to forget that there is an SD45-2 on their roster in the Erie Lackawanna paint scheme (NS 1700, painted in EL colors in 2015). The unit almost never leaves its territory in eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, so it's no surprise that it's probably one of the least-chased heritage units in all of North America.

My own opinions on heritage units by railroad: CSX: Nice but could be better. Pride in service units are peak. NS: Peak, just sucks that some of the ACes are in storage UP: Wannabe Lionel CP: Nice but missing the Milwaukee and Soo CN: Some look better than others (GTW is the best) KCS: Not necessary, KCS Belle is their heritage BNSF: *crickets* Amtrak: All of them are peak, but there should be Phase III as actually applied to P40s Metra: God-awful, as much as I like the railroads they're representing. Milwaukee is the least bad. Not exactly heritage units, but keeping the Burlington lettering on some of the old coaches is a touch of class. Metro-North: Very well-applied NJT: The geeps are peak, the electrics just look bad. SEPTA: Basically sticker units but it's the best they can realistically do given their roster. Shortlines/regionals: Some of the best out there. Veterans units are always good IMO. Also the "We Are One"/NS 4822 stuff is empty virtue signaling by companies that screw their employees at every turn. Very typical of large companies nowadays.
Companies do the "we are ONE" thing when they want to assert corporate dominance over brands or companies they acquired. in the case of CSX, its a way to dominate over regional railroads they acquired or operate over. It's dumb, and shows how disconnected corporate leadership is from the management that actually runs the company.
If bnsf made a bn unit would be a A. Executive B. Cascade green with tiger nose C. Cascade green with white cab D. Cascade green default. Or for lols E. vomit bonnet
So a few things that should be noted about the new Norfolk southern Heritage unit -the contest was announced shortly after Norfolk Southern approved an engineers contract that almost all their unions voted against -supposedly the reason they couldn’t do D&H was because they were not able to obtain licensing from CPKC
I just had a thought imagine the amount of backlash a class 1 would get if they put a heritage unit into long term storage? I’ve been watching these for a while now, not a train enthusiast but they have been growing on me. Might hit up the local crossing soon.
I'm going to say, as a Polish Railfan, we have something similar here. Not exactly like, 'heritage units' specifically, most of our railway companies use old locos, but locos painted in special liveries, they're few and far between, like, we do have some EP07s painted in old liveries, but like, each of them seemingly have an unstable future. EU07-005, one of the oldest locos in PKP IC's service, got repainted into old PKP Colours, while a newer loco, well, 1970s/1980s new anyway, EP07-XXX[don't remember the number], known as 'Szpinak' aka 'Spinach' due to the livery, got scrapped after some license or whatever happened. ET22s, pah, these barely get painted in any liveries besides PKPCargo Blue. Anything else, well, depends on the looks. EDIT; About the actual topic of the video, i really don't think there's much of an issue with US 'heritage units' being more common. With how big the US is, and how lacking the rail network/railroads in general are, as-is, i think it'd be somewhat good for these to be more common, more people will see 'em, ig.
I’m from New York, so I don’t really know much about other state trains (I know a lot about Steam Locomotives mainly), but I think Heritage Units looks cool. I don’t know a lot of them, but I know the UP heritage units. Other than that, I think the heritage units looks cool, it represents the memories of the older railroads.
I live 1 minute from the CSX yard and I have seen 3 different heritage units last year. If you live near a yard, you have a much higher chance of seeing one.
To this day, UP 1979 is the only special interest UP unit I have never seen. It's been trapped in Nebraska local service for most of the time it's been out.
Hey BMSF 1458, absolutely love your videos buddy. I found your channel a couple months ago, and inspired me to make my own channel. Thank you for all the great videos, and hope 2025 is good to you and brings you lots of GEVO’s, lol jk, I meant Heritage Units and fallen flags, love the content buddy.
I'm a rail fan and an aviation history enthusiast, and it bothers me that people would be up in arms over what should be a good thing. What foamers seem to forget about heritage units is that it's not just about being a PR headpiece for the railroad it represents. It's about preserving history, giving people a means of learning about these machines, and keeping them running for future generations to witness as opposed to just scrapping them when they've outlived their usefulness. But well... what can you ask for, from the toxic minority of any community? If railroads stop making heritage units like they're asking, they'll suddenly start screeching about how they aren't "doing enough to preserve historic locomotives". You literally just can't please them.
I got very lucky this summer to see CSXT1836 leading ethanol empties along the Geneva sub. But me seeing heritage units including the UP ones passing through my railfanning area is very low the only time they do is if they get put onto a train that goes through my railfanning area which doesnt happen all that often.
lol imagine if there was a dash 8 inflation, we are lucky we have a dash 9 inflation during the years of 1996-2016 for Ns and for bnsf 1993-2022 or 2023. I would imagine if it was like that for cn csx and up too :/ I think it would be cool and awesome.
Hey 1458 new sub but I have a question about the ddax40 more specifically 2 units from Union Pacific that had an experimental siren device the exact model being the one in my channel icon but with a shorter horn the number of the models are 6924 and 6818 both are in either in museums or scrapped. My question is are there any of these experimental horns left.
its a bit unfair, Australia doesn't really paint freight locomotives into their original liveries while they're still running with current operators, like the only time to see one is in storage and that's like thousands of km away from where they are meant to be running -Werris creek-. It is mainly passenger locomotives that get the heritage livery like V/line A66, A62, Y127 and P20 theyre now heritage only ran and locomotives in the Victorian Railways liveries. it would be nice to see a NR in the old National Rail livery for a celebration or something
its the "slant" that should be a straight line down at the end of the cab... i could live with that. PS- assuming he reads my comment, CSX just did a special interest unit thats a SD70AC flared 4720 "CSX ONE" IT also means that all departments should work together and its not just 1 individual person, its all people (hence one) and most of the "stickers" represent most of the major departments.

Honey wake up BNSF 1458 posted another video
So I see we’ve started using the Moist Critical title format
CSX 4720 looking weird with that orange and in general but at least this did something good with 4851 but didn’t go with the poll with the most votes but I don’t give a crap about that, I give a crap about what’s cool and interesting
When I first saw 4720 I was instantly thought of Conrail SD60I’s. (cause the Mac’s had different paint)
My own opinions on heritage units by railroad:
CSX: Nice but could be better. Pride in service units are peak.
NS: Peak, just sucks that some of the ACes are in storage
UP: Wannabe Lionel
CP: Nice but missing the Milwaukee and Soo
CN: Some look better than others (GTW is the best)
KCS: Not necessary, KCS Belle is their heritage
BNSF: *crickets*
Amtrak: All of them are peak, but there should be Phase III as actually applied to P40s
Metra: God-awful, as much as I like the railroads they're representing. Milwaukee is the least bad. Not exactly heritage units, but keeping the Burlington lettering on some of the old coaches is a touch of class.
Metro-North: Very well-applied
NJT: The geeps are peak, the electrics just look bad.
I saw it believe a CSX heritage unit, it was trailing a CSX lead in lake county, Ohio and had B&O plaque on her side and B&O colors.
Colour
@Baconbs718 back across the pond with you.
Companies do the "we are ONE" thing when they want to assert corporate dominance over brands or companies they acquired. in the case of CSX, its a way to dominate over regional railroads they acquired or operate over. It's dumb, and shows how disconnected corporate leadership is from the management that actually runs the company.
Bro you got to quote that!
I like heritage units, I dont really care if there are too much of them honestly. To me they're a nice way to honor the railroads of the past.
If bnsf made a bn unit would be a
A. Executive
B. Cascade green with tiger nose
C. Cascade green with white cab
D. Cascade green default.
Or for lols E. vomit bonnet
There's still a pile of A around, relabeled as BNSF.
They're ahead of the trend lol.
Considering all new locos suck and look the same, it would be nice to see an older loco, like an SD9 or something in the heritage paint.
So a few things that should be noted about the new Norfolk southern Heritage unit
-the contest was announced shortly after Norfolk Southern approved an engineers contract that almost all their unions voted against
-supposedly the reason they couldn’t do D&H was because they were not able to obtain licensing from CPKC
CSX is obsessed with Hertiage units
the goddamn lego train at 6:18 caught me so off guard 💀
i saw heritage inflation and thought it was gonna be something different.
Csx 4720 looks like BNSFs 25 anniversary units and up 1979 and conrail merged into one locomotive
Great episode. I'll stand ten toes down that NS 4822 looks good.
I just had a thought imagine the amount of backlash a class 1 would get if they put a heritage unit into long term storage?
I’ve been watching these for a while now, not a train enthusiast but they have been growing on me. Might hit up the local crossing soon.
shouldve just painted 4720 into the conrail quality scheme smh
factual
Me personally, idc if it's a hertige unit train is train. I will scream if I do see one on my sac sub division, lol
1:06 where?!!!
I just think older railroads had better paint schemes. More of them is not a problem for me!
Rare BNSF 1458 endorsement of Norfolk Southern
The honoring workers one has to be one of my favorites ever.
7:53 I call UP 1979 a Wokamotive.
4851 was painted for T&AG since NS didn’t get the rights from CPKC to do so, so they went with the 2nd popular option
Coming from aviation, I can understand how one would "think" this is the minority. It's not.
I would imagine if it was like that for cn csx and up too :/ I think it would be cool and awesome.
foamers will be anything but grateful for special units💀
I have seen Southern unit 8099 once and I really hope to see it again. I really love Southern ES44AC unit 8099.❤❤❤❤❤
Atleast the new CSX one isnt a GEVO
The GE hate is real and I really don’t understand it.
I never realized how much the Norfolk southern 4822 looks like can of Coke Zero
its the "slant" that should be a straight line down at the end of the cab... i could live with that. PS- assuming he reads my comment, CSX just did a special interest unit thats a SD70AC flared 4720 "CSX ONE" IT also means that all departments should work together and its not just 1 individual person, its all people (hence one) and most of the "stickers" represent most of the major departments.
