  • For today's challenge, we are seeing how long our money can go in a food market here in Mexico City! This was also my first time feeling extremely unwelcomed and that wasn't too comfortable. Tune in to find out if what I got was worth the coins!

You explored the San Juan Pugibet Market, renowned for its array of 'exotic' goods. While the market is known for its unique offerings, it tends to be pricier compared to conventional markets. Interestingly, in close proximity lies another market known as San Juan Arcos de Belém, one of the four San Juan Public Markets. This particular market boasts more budget-friendly prices, making it a preferable choice. The former, however, is often regarded as a tourist spot. So, no, you didn´t get scammed, you just went to a whitexican market where people like to pretend they know about food.

I love CDMX! I lived in Merida for the last 3 years. It really helps to learn Spanish. I think the locals in CDMX are tired of expats not speaking Spanish or even trying. Another tip is to maybe avoid filming folks or blur their faces. They will look at you rude if they think you're recording them without permission. It's a lot more courtesy and respectful that way. Good luck!

It seems like they were not able to speak or understand much of what you were saying in English, And they didn’t seem to care or give an effort at meeting you halfway to reach an understanding.

Im glad i came across your channel. I get a chance to see how life looks there. Im excited! Im going to mexico city next month in January

I visited QRO last month for the very first time. It was my first time out of the US and I didn't know what to expect. I did go to one of the markets and it was a struggle because I speak very (very) little Spanish. However, the people that I met there were extremely kind. I mean, one guy went above and beyond to help me by leaving his "store" in the market to walk me down to another "store" in the market so I could purchase some rice. Just was NOT EXPECTING this level of kindness, even though I had seen many videos talking about how people in Mexico (in particular QRO) were very friendly for the most part. THAT BEING SAID: I did get scammed! Lol! I was walking through the market and there were two ladies just kind of set up in the market but not in a booth. They both just had a table and a chair if I remember correctly. I know one was selling vegetables...not sure what the other lady was selling. I saw the first lady was selling bags of garlic and I wanted to get some. She told me 30 pesos. Well, I was not familiar Mexican currency as well as I should have been. I had some coins in my pocket and just grabbed all of them and held them out to her, asking her to show me how much I had and if it was enough. If I had taken the time to READ, I would have seen the amount on the coins. All she said was Yes. I said, Yes? All of them? She said Yes. And (dumb me) I gave her all of them. Later when I got back to the Airbnb, I looked at some coins I still left and realized that I had to have given her over 100 pesos. I felt bad but only for a split second. I figured if that was the worst thing that happened on this trip, I was coming out way ahead (and it was the worst part of the trip, because the rest was absolutely amazing).

I actually live close to Alameda Park, but I recently checked out the area where you were at in behind the US Embassy. I've been on and off here for 12+ years, and still see something new everyday. It's pretty common to be ignored if they don't understand you, and sometimes asking questions really bothers them. However, I can say that this city really does grow on you. One day you will leave Mexico City, but Mexico City will never leave you!
