Hi to you all Volvo owners! First of all i have to say that SirRobb is the Superman of old Volvo. Thanks to him i discovered why my old d5 made that strange noise when pullin off the oil filler cap. I can confirm that is a vacuum related issue. so, i noticed that when pushin hard the brake peddal the noise stoped. so in my case it was the power brake booster cause is related to the vacuum pump. the car was brakin just fine but sometimes the return of the brakin pedal was kind of slow followd by some air leak, like a wistle. Hope this info is usefull for those who didnt find anyother leak on the engine monunts or vacuum pump. Thank you SirRobb

Hi Johnny, I have just found a similar knocking noise after pulling off the oil cap of my C30 D5. It sounds very similar to this video but higher pitched. Can you remember if the sound from your engine was higher pitched? Would I be able to contact you and send you a video? I still need to check the engine mounts the same way this video suggests and also push the break pedal hard like what you did and see if the noise stops. Cheers.

Had exact same problem, went on YT found your video SiRobb and everything is sorted now. I just had to comment beacuse you helped me effectively and quickly diagnosed this! Much much appreciated for your kindness and that you are uploading such videos! 2 weeks ago I was after W124 MB pre 1993 but I couldn't find right example so I changed my mind and luckily my Gold D5 2002 S60 with 65k milage came up on Facebook marketplace and I decided to give a go beacuse my head always turned around when I saw these cars and used to always liked them : D Same as 7xx series, 9xx, 850, and pre 2002 V70s. My car was bit neglected but I am giving her proper care now. Last week front and rear engine mounts, full service plus carbon cleaning, front brake pads, central exaust leak welded, Injector seal replaced, turbine refurbished and wheel alignment done. That's so far. I am gonna check all suspension as a next step and replace gradually everything which needs to be addressed. Feel good about that! I've got one struggle with interior though and it's driver seats. Because it's Velour ( I didn't want leather interior) the seat is worn and there are holes already in a stichings. Anyway this as well will be done! They such a great cars. They have this feel of 90s/80s and when you driving one no any other from any new ones brands will make you smile and there is feeling in you that you actually never will go for modern beacuse is there any pleasure to drive a soulless machine ? : ) I like as well idea that these cars proper maintained lasts forever not needing to be replaced and people by keeping them developing some sort of feelings towards them. That's true friendship beetwen the man and the machine isn't ? SiRoob have a nice day tomorrow and wish you all the best! Cheers!

You are so right about so called experts I know this through bitter experience. Recently I took my 2007 D5 to a workshop fir a crank shaft seal replacement, a 7-8 hour job listed in Volvo schedules of work. The workshop took the whole engine and gearbox out, split the two, replaced the seal, replaced the whole unit resulting in a car that would not run properly below 2k revolutions. 24 hours work, a car unuseable and they wanted £1400, and I bought the seal.

I removed the brake booster vacuum hose from the vac pump and this popping noise STOPPED! Stick my finger over the pump inlet and the popping starts again. How contrary is that. Very good videos and much appreciated.

    • @sirobb
      @sirobb  Год назад +1

Use a vacuum tester and and check at different engine temperatures as the EGR position can cause the popping noise even with a sound vacuum system.

@@sirobb That does make sense, thank you. I was having slow start issues with my xc70 and tracked back to the ECU not seeming to transmit a signal to glow plug relay, also the original volvo glow plug connectors were really craply done so I have just made a whole new glow plug relay and distribution system controlled by a NO micro push switch mounted on plastic panel near gear stick. Also noticed that when the coolant temp switch is removed, the car is fooled into thinking it's very cold so opens up fuel rack etc and starts immediately (sort of puts it into beast mode). So I have run that to a NC momentary switch next to the glow plug relay witch. One way or the other, that get it started! These are so well built, but sometimes a bit too clever so we have to rethink the electrics. Before I got it the history shows a fortune spent at volvo garage to fix glow issues, fab remedies like wrapping tap around the glow connections!

I own an D5 with engine damage cause I've a good engine to replace. Thr engine runs and To hear was this Noise (thanks to you i knew what it is) and a metallic hard noise from a defect top engine mount. a detective Glowplug prevent from a good start. So the previous owner had been informed by the workshop that engine damage was imminent and he sell it cheap.
It's a shame what workshops tell his customers for a bullshit for the next order. Ok the dpf was full cause glowplug failure but I repaired it all and have a very good in shape v70 phase 3 for much less than good in state running cars....

The vacuum softens and hardens the mount to improve engine damping and reduce cabin vibration.

thanks man, you are great to bother replying to me.
My son in Germany googled it the other day when I was chatting to him and.I'm happy to hear he is right!😊
Was wondering how long I can let it go on for, any danger to the turbo I hope by leaving it for a while?
These motors fuel economy is allegedly 6,5 l per 100km(i think-its the d5) but with a well serviced engine and driving responsibility(mellow acceleration etc, I am an experienced driver) I'm wondering what kind of fuel economy I should expect.
      Any idea here Rob?
(It might be a good indicator of excessive vacuum leakage from those engine mounts..)
No worries if its asking too much, but if you have some idea, I'd appreciate some insight here.
      Cheers Rob.

Hi SiRobb, I have a XC70 D5 2005, got the same noise when opening the oil filler cap, WIll try to remove the hoses to the engine pads, I also agree it is a vaccum issue, my question, I was probably stupid when I blew compressed air into the hoses after removing the hoses from the TCV. Do you think I have damaged something with the compressed air. The turbo is not working anymore but that could be linked to being clogged with oil sauce after the oil cooler broke. Thx and best regards from a Swede living in Germany having three Volvos. XC70 D5 , V70 GLT 1997, S80 V8 2007 with Heico sport exhaust.

Testet it with a vac gauge. The vacuum comes in pulses, and it wont build up, it just flickers. Removing the maf makes it even worse. Thinking its the vac pump thats broken. Just wondered if there are any other things I can check before I get a new one? Can't see how the maf sensor has anything to do with vacuum the pump produces? I have the EURO3

See my video here ruclips.net/video/0zsIa4Y2Tcs/видео.html and put the vacuum tester directly onto the vacuum pump.
If the needle flickers and doesn't stay stable, the vacuum pump is faulty or the vacuum pump seals.
Buying a used pump should be quite cheap because they are very reliable so not in high demand.

Hi Sirobb! i had the same problem. the popping went away by isolating the rear mount- changed the mount and the popping is still there. The line itself holds preassure. Im stuck now. One volvo garage told me that they have seen many euro 3 engines that have this popping that goes away by isolating the rear mount even when the mount itself is fine. Is that true? is the rear mount supposed to leak some vacuume?

    • @abood_abtv4203

The rear mount could be perished and releasing vacuum and replace the vacuum hoses

    • @krumins9
      @krumins9 3 года назад +2

@@abood_abtv4203 In the end i ended up swaping out both vacuum actuated mounts and vacuum hoses and the vibration in cabbin got even worse- transmissions tarted touching the subframe at times so another independent garage swapped out all 3 rubber mounts (for Lemforder) since they all were perished and only then found out that the new "Febi" vacuum mounts were both shot (assuming- defected from factory or just designed badly") and leaking oil when removed for inspection once again. Got "Lemforder" ones and all the vibration and popping went away.

Is this something that would be harmful for the engine to drive with over longer period of time, or is it just a concern or not while idling?

Mine (XC70 D5, 2010) have the same problem, with 130k km on it. Too, after 1800 revs, a great amount of black smoke is expeled by the exhaust . In the garage, they removed cylinder head, replaced valves and put new guides (even when those components were fine), new timing belt and put repair kits on both turbos. Now I continue with the same problem and someones new, because they didn´t rebuilt properly the machine. I heard vacuum system can be faulty. Someone could find out the culprit? Thank you!!!

    Hopefully helps someone.
Symptoms: turbo hose had a small leak, black exhaust gases, after some time the hose was "open", smoke stopped, engine went into limp mode, after fixing the hose, the turbo did not work, DTC was P0244
I took a syringe and tried to create some vacuum to all hoses I could reach out to.
    - After that I only had the turbo working between 2.200-3.500 RPM *hope*
    - I focused on the intake manifold, EGR, or some other sensors. I was some minutes before taking out my whole EGR and cleaning it, kinda desperate hoping to solve it somehow not knowing what was the root cause.
    - Then I saw that video like 5 times, remembered that yesterday there was a hard popping knocking sound when I removed the oil cap while the engine was running.
    - Someone in another video said that it's quite normal and the sound comes from the vacuum pump, so it has to be there, otherwise the vac pump wasn't working.
But: If you listen carefully what SiRobb says: the popping noise is the symptom of having a leakage AND it says that the vac pump is not the issue.
Solution: I just took the hose which connects the electronic valve (location: mounted on the air filter housing) with the papenburg electronic valve (location: below intake manifold, near the starter motor, you have to remove the turbo intake pipes to get to it), and just stuffed that pipe with a small piece of wood I found on the floor. Assuming that my motor mounts have a leakage like he said.
Crazy things happened after that: My turbo is doing things I never saw before 🙂 Thank You thousand times!
Finally, the DTC is gone, meanwhile I had somehting with glow plugs bank something, also gone, currently I have a P0108 now saying "pressure too high", however I highly appreciate your work and will continue optimizing my vehicle, hopefully living a long life without incidents.
    specs: XC90 2005, D5244T, M66 AWD, 360.000km
