3:48 Cab overhang on curves was a prototypical issue, so it's almost more realistic to see it swing out like this! Earlier versions had a 2 wheel pilot, and crews were unnerved by how often the cab swung out during curves. The 4 wheel pilot helped, but still could be nerve wracking.
I’m like you Mike. I was never a fan of the cab forwards until I got my hands on one. Now I have two and I love them. Both Lionmaster LC2, one Daylight one Southern Pacific Lines. Also you’re not alone with the front truck derailment. Both of mine do it all the time for some reason. Happens more on S curves like you said but sometimes for no reason it will derail on a straight track lol. Must be a design issue.
Very nice! The cab-forwards are some real cool locomotives. I really like semi-scale equipment. Not so much for curves, as I have the larger diameter curves on my layout. I just think that they look better on the more medium/larger-sized layouts, like mine. As for that curve, you could calm-down the transition by using a larger diameter curve at the start and the going to the tighter curves after. It really doesn't increase the total diameter, but just makes the entry less abrupt, especially where that curve changes direction. I've done that on my inner loops and it works quite well. Either way, that is one gorgeous locomotive. An excellent video, as always.
There are a couple legacy version of the Cab forward yes the 2010 one you mentioned but Lionel did it in 22 I believe in the lark scheme I know for sure really want one great vid!
As usual awesome review and history lesson! you know I'm all in on lionmaster but just can't fall in love with the cab forwards, just look odd to me. Also, S curves are a known issue, you should always try to put a small straight in between two curves that are creating an S, helps with those derailing issues you mentioned.
I love the cab forward since it's a weird-ish steamer. Kinda my thing is random things but hey it works. I do have a suggestion for that O84 to O48 point. If you have the space to slightly wiggle the tracks, you could put a 1 3/4 piece of fastrack in there. I had used to have something like that but it was both O48 to O48 and it definitely helped with front pilots jumping around! Just an idea!
If you can't squeeze a track piece in there have you tried slightly banking the turn at the derail point? I'm guessing it derails on the outside and if so maybe a slight bank can help. I've fixed a few problems with that myself.

Being an SP fan and living within an hour to 4294, I had to get one myself. Mine is the legacy, scale one, but the LionChief one seems very nice!
If we had the space I’d get the scale one! But I’m really glad they made one that can handle our turns!

@Dadified86 Some engines act differently to certain types of curves. It probably how they did the draw bar.
