Making a "Hydra" Penta-Bow - Extreme Penobscot Bow Build
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- Building a Penobscot style bow with the use of hand tools. I used black locust wood for this bow build. The bows is drawing 60lb at 26" (draw weight can be adjusted by twisting bow strings). To combine all the bows together I used flax twine and hide glue. What a beast of a bow it is!
Thanks for watching! - Хобби
I would absolutely love to know how a design like this affects the felt draw weight vs the actual firing force, because I've seen a fair few penobscot bows but virtually none laid out QUITE the same way as this. Would it be cheeky of me to ask if there's any way you could maybe like fire a few arrows through a chrono and then compare against a few other types of bows with a similar draw weight?
Great build though, either way!
Boosting this comment because I am also curious
This is what I came here for, please please get into the data of the differences that it makes, if not I'd love to tell you a few tests to run and cheap ways to get some accurate force measurements. Super curious, keep up the bad ass crafting friend!
Totally this! I came here to ask this. Its wild that the pull weight is only 60lbs, I'm curious to know how much force it translates to compared to a standard design with similar pull weight.
Either way wicked cool bow! Thanks for sharing OP!
Very nice work - I'm exploring bow making and like your approach and style.
The first time a Facebook Ad has ever lead me to something I didn't know I needed.
🙏🙏
Needs more footage of you actually shooting it and hitting targets, cause as of this video it just looks interesting, the functionality it's questionable
You're right, this project wasn't about building the best performing bow but more about experimenting with design and having some fun. Will upload more shooting footage tho, thanks for the comment!
@@DreamcraftBows .....What an honest reply....Given my complete lacking in, Well; any Skill, I was intrigued by your abilities.
And I too, was interested in HOW, all of the additions; are of any benefit to the bow. I noticed that you did not draw the string back as one might - Am I mistaken ? Could it be drawn back further, without fear of breaking ?
What’s the draw weight on this thing?
@@shaunkelly9053 That info is contained within the description of the video above the comments section.
He uploaded a video a month before this one of him shooting it
Surprised someone hasn't used this in a movie, like Avatar would have been a great fit.
Would be awesome!
That was cool shot with the wood in the bucket at 2:00
Glad you appreciate it 👊
I could really taste the splinters
A really inventive idea! As an old bloke who spent 50 or more years making furniture and other wood items, I must say I've never seen a rougher job in all that time!
I think you would do better with some spokeshaves & abrasives papers. They will give a decent finished job!
wow, when i see your materials,
i know you are a master of your craft. impressive.
Thank you very much. I do my best
Co za projekt i wyzwanie! Świetna robota
Dzięki, cieszę się, że się podoba!
Great design. Looks awesome! Very cool watching the build from start to finish.
Thank you for the comment, appreciate it!
Beautiful bow, man
Thanks brother
How much does a hydra run? Cause I would absolutely love to be an elven king for SACON in October, and this is like the ultimate bow, I’d request a mixture of green, black and gold paint(not sure if you paint them as I didn’t see any on your website)
Jednak przyszedł czas na dziesięciornicę. 😁 Piękny! Gratulacje. !
Dziękuję!
Asked this a couple times:
Would it be possible to make a Penobscot bow with eccentric cams like for a compound bow?
Never thought about it 👊
I am not sure if I understand how this is an advantage.
Less effort to pull while having more arrow speed? Yes?
OR, does it just "look" cool?
The ability to adjust the drawweight by stringing additional bows but also by shortening particular bow strings making these smaller bows draw more or less depending on the target draw weight. Besides that it is a cool look
Looks pretty cool 😎 glad it actually works 😊
Thanks! Yes, it does, but it's not very practical one.
Impressive bow. Big chunks of wood transforming into beautiful bows... What do you do with all these wood chips?
Thanks! I use these as a kindling
This is genuinely amazing!
Glad you think so!
Other than amazing aesthetics, does this hydra design offer other benefits?
Check out this video for explanation : ruclips.net/video/-qsSLjJf7UE/видео.html
It's a bit like the Douglas Adams novel: make it so that it has a good and a bad side. And everyone should recognise immediately that they are on the wrong side. And if that means sticking three bows on top, then we'll stick three bows on top.
Nunca vi algo tan sorprendente mente complejo🎉🎉🎉🎉
Loved this project 👊
Need to make a crossbow version that would be siiick
Awesome idea!
8:07 you’re welcome
👍🏼👍🏼
Ty
You sir are doing godswork
does it shoot well?
as in any special bahaviour, advantages or potential advantages, etc.?
It can handle higher poundage without taking much set and it has adjustable drawweight
what woods are you using here?
Black locust
Isn't it a bit heavy? There's a lot of mass in all those arms. Wouldn't it be faster to just use one or maybe two arms?
Nevertheless a really fine bow. Looks fantastic, great work!
Yes it is. Also a bit thick in the handle. Probably it would be, I built this one mainly for fun and as an experiment.
Thank you a lot!
@@DreamcraftBows vary little motion in the limbs = fast bow... Vary much mass in the limbs = not so fast bow.
You need to almost go clear down to laminate sheets for each limb to make this bow effective.
That said, I wonder if breaking up the compressive force on so much surface area has any affect on the rate at which the wood takes string follow?
what is the liquid you put on the cord wrap?
Hide glue sealed later with a water based varnish
How much do you want to make me one?
I don't make these for sale, but I sell some of my bows check out my website: dreamcraftbows.com
Nicely done, sub.
Thanks, appreciate it!
Does it work?
Yeah 👌
Shut up and take my money!!!!!!! This is awesome!!!
Glad you like it!
What kind of wood is this?
Black locust
@@DreamcraftBows is there any chance that i can buy this?
This bow feels like the end boss of a video game....
👊👊
Wood type?
Black locust
I found the Legendary weapon
💪💪
phuckin amazing !!!!!!!! ...........
Appreciate it 👊
Man we need some specs of this! @tods workshop!
💪💪
RUclips algo not catching your bow.
Yeah that's sad 👊
Cool!
Thanks!
I thought @xiaomanyc is on his path to becoming an archer warrior. Jk! Peace! Nice build!
Thanks 🙏
nice
Thank you!
Dejavu all over the 3rd time?
He will take it down and upload it twice a day forever haha
Jeszcze jeden taki łuk. Następnie pokryj je tkaniną i będziesz miał samolot. Będziesz mógł wtedy przestawić się na konstruowanie bomb lotniczych.
Dzięki tak zrobię 👊
@@DreamcraftBows 💥💫
no gloves... what are your hands made out of?! i'd have so many splinters i'd have hedgehogs for hands!
I usually use them and I highly recommend it (yes, I got some splinters)
I guess he'll get about 12 videos out of this build? Or more.
Will do 👊
I usually love your vids but just why. Penscot style is neat but that far is just going over baord
Cos
Your bowstring technique honestly leaves much to be desired, after so many years you have never learned how to properly draw a bow, you always draw at 80 or 70%, it feels like you are afraid that the bow will break in your hands, at least that’s what it looks like from the outside, as for this helicopter, it’s not for everyone, one question is why make it? and who will buy one?
I like short drawlength and that's the way I shoot. I made this one for fun, it's not for sale 👊
Couple more and they would all fuse into one solid plane and you would be back to having a selfbow.
Like puff pastry dough when you fold it too many times.
Id love to see this thing tested vs a normal longbow, a composite bow, an recurve bow and a crossbow...
Im really interested in some comparison regarding range, precission and penetration power 🤔✌️
But however it ends, that thing looks cool 👌
To be honest Hydra's only advantage is probably the adjustable draw weigth and cool look. Thank you for the comment 💪💪
Never seen one of your videos before, impressed that you used all hand tools
Thank you, appreciate it!
Thought the same thing
Yes, it's incredible. It made me realize that we can do so much with just a knife, rope and glue, and we can make the rope and the glue easily too. Glue probably not necessary could be replaced by rope alone, but my guess is it makes it a lot easier to build, and in any case it was home-baked glue.
Insane build, those shots of it on the tillering rack are so freaking cool. Such a sinister look, never gotten that feeling from a bow before, fantastic!
Thank you, glad you liked it!
This looks like a bow Heracles would use
👍🏻👍🏻
Looks badass, why have I never seen this concept before? The handle is clearly too fat though, needs a spacer between the main bow and the auxiliary bows so that you can fit your fingers through and just hold the one bow instead of having to wrap your hand around that whole stack. That's the only issue I can see which might make this build impractical.
Some numbers would make this vid meaningful.
Seen this on the yt shorts and had to find the full build this thing is awsome
Glad you like it, thanks!
Same man haha I love bows
what do you mean "had to find" theres a link right there in the yt short to this full video?
What’s the weight of the bow
The description says 60lbs at 26" draw
So question i did not see you follow a growth ring? Do you not do this?
I always do follow a growth ring - in this projects I did too
Is this a Windforce or what?? I dont see a golden name though. Trade it for a Soj?
wholly underrated craftsmanship my friend.
millions should be seeing this.
Appreciate it, would be awesome!
So what did this chrono at?
Can you share, the times for the curves? How long to simmer and how long to be pressed?
The wood was steamed for 30minutes each time. Then it stayed in the jig for 2 hours
What is the purpose of this type of bow. Just a question I have never seen anything like it before
Check out this video, here I explain the topic: ruclips.net/video/-qsSLjJf7UE/видео.html
Would build these to sell? I think this is cool as hell and would be interested in purchasing one…
I don't sell these sir, sorry 👊
I wonder how it wfdwct bow tho.. does it make arrow fly faster? It kinda looks like that tho.. oh and nice build.. saw it in ine short.. had to check it out :)
Impressed with your work as always. Draw weight?
Appreciate it. 60lb at 26” 👊
@@DreamcraftBows epic! Ive made two limb penobscots, but I'm inspired to go further
Is it more powerful?
Yes, a bit
But how does it perform?
It shoots quite fast but haven't tested the speed yet
you ever finish bending an end then take it out of the vise and go "shit I bent that the wrong way" ?
Luckily it didn't happen yet
@@DreamcraftBows nice. I would 100% have done so once and then had a mild panic attack every time I made a bend thinking I did it again
Did anybody notice the handmade vise?
Good eye!
@@DreamcraftBows lol thanks. I like people who make stuff, including myself. I really like your channel.
Cool! Just curious why you varnished after it was assembled and not before. I know nothing about woodworking, just curious. Great video. Inspires me to find a new creative project. Or maybe to take up archery :D
Thank you! It was easier to do before as there was more sanding and finishing works after joining all the bows together (the excesive glue had to be removed too). Happy to hear that, all the best 💪
Awesome 👏🏼 lovely build
Thanks 👊
Absolutely fascinating bow and great video showing its construction!
Thank you very much!
What's the weight, and draw length?
Approx 60lb at 26”
Gorgeous - well done, it's satisfying to see this get made.
Thank you for the comment, appreciate it!
Definitely the bow of all time
Love it too 👊
Oh come on! Let us see what it does to the target!
It does what other bows do but more 💀
can you make this one for me ?
I don't make this type of bows for sale.
Looks good, works better?!🙃
Works great!
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that what a compound bow is for?
From the little reading I've done, this style of bow was a primitive workaround to using inferior wood in bow construction [pine, cottonwood], regions where maple or yew would be hard to come by
Brian 👍🏼
Need to make a crossbow version that would be siiick
Cool idea! If only crossbows were legal here in Poland...
@DreamcraftBows oh dang I didn't know that, well hey food for though. Well anyway cool craftsmanship brother!
great project, what wood is this my friend?
Thank you! It's black locust wood.
Видно щоб з нього стріляти треба 10 років позайматись спортом , спортом всеодно потрібно займатись )))) стріляєш і займаешся спортом ))) вам потрібен реліз , спусковий механізм на руку , пальцями важко і можна травмувати пальці .
That is insane
Maybe a bit 👊
@@DreamcraftBowshow does this bow affect the efficiency of the arrows? Does less draw weight equal more power than a regular longbow would have, or is it just a novelty item? It would be really cool for you to make a video comparing this bow to a longbow of the same draw weight
Why waste your time?
1 it looks cool
2 reduce draw weight while increasing velocity of release
@@Thedeepshadows does NOT accomplish #2
@@CristianZamoraCristian stfu w all that hate why waste ur time being an asshole
@@CristianZamora Some people will never understand physics. They just assume more is better. In this case the velocity is highly impeded. There is a reason these designs never went anywhere. They aren't better.
For fun 👊
