Well this king cobra was quite small and young. Their venom isn't that lethal drop for drop but boy do they produce a lot of it. This means size matters in how fast their prey subcomes
I was able to get a 12 foot king cobra to feed on thawed rats by saving sheds and wrapping rats in the shed skins. Bingo instant rat burrito that smells like a snake!
@@jeroenr.2737 Its not just the prey that has no chance to survive, the predator also has no chance of hunting down its prey naturally without human assistance when it is in captivity. In nature they aren't confined to a cage and the only living being (except microorganisms) in their reach. In captivity humans determine their whole lives and fate, and if you are against that, then keeping animals isn't for you (maybe a free roaming house cat if anything)

The venom took longer becuz the snake was cold blooded so their blood doesnt circulate as fast as a warm blooded so in turn the venom took longer to get to the vitals and paralyze and what ever else.
It was very interesting to see how relatively calm the rat snake was for most of the envenomation. While live feeding is very sad and difficult to watch, not to mention potentially dangerous for the animal being fed, it can be a learning opportunity, which is exactly what you guys did. Thank you for sharing this experience in this way. On a much lighter note; I know it was the cobra readjusting and swallowing the rat snake, every time it stopped and flexed its body, it looked like it was taking a moment to catch its breath during a speed eating competition.
With all due respect king cobras wouldn't hunt fead prey in the wild so in my opinion this so much more close to what they would do in the wild , and yes the animal.being fed could be hurt but that could very well happen in the wild aswell
@llewelynventer2976 It may be closer to what happens in the wild, but this is a captive cobra. If we can make its life easier, less stressful, and less dangerous, then we should.
It's not that the food was a living animal, it's how the animal became food. There are far more humane-seeming ways to end a food animal. I'm not saying these guys didn't give it a herculean effort; I'm sure they did. If there was another way, I'm sure they'd try it. Dying from invenomation must be terrifying.
Tobie Whitten so which animal is more important ? If the snake won’t eat frozen are you making the decision it should have a slow death and starve over days ? Or should a mouse who’s been bred to be food be fed to the snake ? Also just because the animal is previously frozen doesn’t mean it was killed humanely it just means you didn’t see it happen. Maybe that points to something inside of you , you’re fine with animal being killed just as long as it doesn’t happen in front of you . Do you take this same stance on all lives being killed ? I feel like this is the natural way , just because it’s not your way doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Snakes in the wild eat live food .

Tobie Whitten its no different than in the wild. I understand its "inhumane" for you but some animals are completely picky with food, I have multiple reptiles that will only eat live food. Not to be rude but thats how that goes.
Live feeding is clearly necessary at times, thank you for being respectful, responsible and educational on this subject. Nature isn't bothered by emotion but you and will are not doing it for views or sensationalism. Yes its hard to watch but it is what it is and again you covered this subject brilliantly. Another great example of amazing reptile keeping/ conservation and education.
I am consistently amazed at how intelligent cobras are. You can just see the little gears turning in their heads. They definitely think things over before acting.
I really appreciate the way this was presented. I expected to hate it, but it was very informative and didn't feel like you were doing it for the views. Now that I'm raising my own rats I can really empathize. Selecting a pet to feed another pet is not an easy thing to do and you want to avoid inflicting any unnecessary anguish.
Breeding for pets and breeding for food are 2 diffrent things. Sounds you've got them mixed. I breed for snake food and have no problem choosing which ones to feed my snakes
So the sequence of events: someone mentioned that the rat snake had been loaded with pinkies and so it’s mouth smelled of rodents. Then the king cobra started it’s attack. Then the rat snake bit the photographer. Then the king cobra ate the rat snake now with the smell of a human finger on its mouth...
No, it's not the way it is IN nature, in nature that rat snake wouldn't be literally put in the line of fire of the cobra's bite. The cobra would have to earn it's kill by finding and hunting down a smaller snake. This infatuation that these self-called experts is puzzling to me. They claim not to like the live feeding, well, okay but cobras kill other cobras too, so why don't you allow two cobra's to 'get it on' and see who eats whom ?

@@Butterfly-mt5ml wild reptiles aren't typically trapped in a 4x2 enclosure with their prey and as such if things do go south they can potentially escape and not be murdered by said prey. If it's a necessity then it would be a practice used by all reptile owners because their animals would die otherwise. Presumably in your down time you do the natural thing and roam around foraging and hunting for food in the wilds, rather than sitting at a computer watching videos like the rest of us, since that's how humans are technically supposed to survive.

I finally watched this video after it kept being in my recommendeds. Thanks for being mature about the situation. I have always had a fondness for reptiles, but I also come from a perspective of when I was a young child my first pet was a rat, who I was extremely attached to, so naturally I have a certain love for rats. I know a lot of people in the world don't necessarily care about rats, but aren't used to seeing snakes used as feeder animals, so it's harder for them to stomach. Me, it's still hard for me to watch, but I can't look at it much differently than when rats are fed to snakes. What really matters in the end, is being sure to be as respectful to all creatures involved, as much as possible. I started watching Chandler's Wild Life recently. It's a pity that this king cobra can't be fed invasive pythons from Florida too, but like y'all clearly said, yours unfortunately will only eat live... and yeah I don't think anyone would want the lil' guy to get parasites, since they'd have to be frozen to kill those off. Gotta keep the pretty lil' guy nice and healthy.
The respect and sympathetic vibes towards the prey was very refreshing. Hardly anyone is grateful for the sacrifice. I do feel bad for the lil rat snake..but I also feel bad for the infinite number of cows/pigs/chickens/etc. that most people (not including myself) eat everyday without knowing or caring where it comes from. Sometimes it’s just down right necessary since the Cobra CAN and WILL die if it doesn’t eat. I appreciate soooo much how none of you guys were treating the rat snake bad or laughing historically the entire time and obviously loving every second of the rat sanke’s pain/sacrifice/fate like MOST people who post live feeding 🙏 So thank you ALL!!! i have to also agree. ive watched live feeding videos before and i hated them all. not because of the live feeding, but because it felt like one of those “dark videos”. its almost like the people did it for pleasure rather than feeding their animals. i loved this video because its the opposite of that

This is definitely one of the best live feeding videos I've seen: informative, done safely, and with normal healthy food for the cobra! I hate channels that pit their pets against dangerous live prey they would never even encounter in the wild. I saw one where the guy fed his African bullfrog an Asian giant hornet and the hornet stung the frog to the point its eyes were streaming water. It was sad and fucked up. Who puts their pet in so much pain like that for RUclips views? Live feeding can definitely be a tricky issue when ethics are concerned but sometimes you really don't have a choice. When I taught nature classes at a summer camp we had one snake we had to live feed because she would just ignore everything else. It was sad at first to see the mice struggle, but it ensured that our beloved snake would stay healthy and well fed! She'd had a clutch of eggs earlier that summer too so it was extra important that momma got all of her energy back! Best of luck with the cobra! 🐍
I don't see an ethics issue personally, as long as you're feeding your animal things they would eat in the wild. If anything, owning the animal in the first place is the ethical issue. That and breeding animals just for food. I don't see a big difference between a snake killing an animal to eat, and a human killing an animal to feed to another. In my opinion, if you're not prepared for the brutality of nature then you probably shouldn't have it near you.
Yea, I’m comfortable feeding my corn snake live mice right now, but if she gets too big for mice and had to move on to rats, that scares me a little. I’m not sure if I’m mentally prepared to stun rats before feeding them to a snake, but I might have to do that since my snake was well beyond the point of eating frozen thawed even if I wanted to when I bought her.
@@metaknight115 You probably won't need to worry about feeding your corn snake rats unless she can't be sustained even on a weekly schedule of mice (though if she's not gaining weight on a weekly schedule that could be a symptom of something else causing her to lose weight), but if you do ever switch to rats I will say just be mindful of their higher fat content and that you'll probably need to span her feeding schedule out accordingly so she doesn't get overweight or obese, and I wouldn't recommend going bigger than a small rat.

I'm unfortunately in a similar situation with my BCI. I've gotten him to accept a frozen rat pup once. Every other time, he has refused to eat unless his food is live. I'm still trying to get him to switch to frozen and will continue to try for as long as I have him.
I know this is an old comment, I hope you've succeeded by nowz but in case you haven't, I actually had the same case with my BCI, she refused to eat frozen thawed rats, multies or normal mice, but she took everything live. So I tried with hotter water, but that didn't do, cause I guess it was too hot, but then I thawed the rat normally and when I was about to offer it to my snake, I dipped the rats head into hot water, that is just before boiling and it worked ever since 😁
Gabbie Ski King Cobra venom is actually not very toxic, they are only very dangerous due to the volume of venom they can inject. As a result if they don’t give a lot of venom in the bite then it won’t be so fast acting.
Snakes are cold blooded, and that one wasn't expending a ton of energy fighting back. That kept it alive longer, along with the sub-optimal bite along the tail as opposed to behind the head. The more experienced Kings bite the body, and move to behind the head as quickly as possible to inject the venom into key areas. The amount of venom and potency are good for killing quickly, but that was an inexperienced little juvenile. It likely dumped it's load in the first two bites and that made it more ineffective.
It’s what they do in the wild and if that’s the only way you can get him to eat and get to taking frozen then you just gotta do it. If you don’t like it just find another video to watch.

This was an incredibly informative video. Ive wondered how a king cobra would go about feeding on other snakes. Its not far off from what i pictured but its still breathtaking to see. King cobras are such majestic creatures and i possibly would've gone my whole life knowing they eat other snakes but never actually getting to see this so thank you.

Kevin explains why he is doing this, how do you think he got so knowledgeable about reptiles. By taking the time to do things like this to learn about the animals natural behavior.

I feel like if it weren’t for Kevin and the general conversation in the room while filming, I wouldn’t feel like it was as much of a learning experience as it was. Definitely sad to see a live feeding video, but very cool to understand the natural feeding behavior of king cobras.

Dog food manufacturers make it so like ingesting meat yourself, you're blatantly unaware of the process of breeding and the killing of the food. All dog food has some form of death.

I wish they stop apologizing for feeding live animals to these snakes. RUclips has discovery channels that show the same thing. This is what these snakes do it’s in them to be what they are. Snakes eat other snakes theses days people be seeing all kinds of ignorant things yet they pull out there phone and record like it’s something to learn from that. This is educational and I just ask to stop apologizing if they don’t want to watch don’t watch. I know these guys want to be professionals but showing how it happens in the wild is keeping it professional as it can be. People who speak on “its inhumane” yea so is police killing innocent people who are unarmed. This is nature seeing a dead animals being fed no different from an animal doing what it does it’s called “Survival of the fittest”. Keep showing it it actually informational and it’s just real life.
The problem is that people nowadays rather want to hear beautiful lies than reality, in my opinion, if you can't see an animal killing an other you shouldn't have them as a pet in the first place. It's kind of a double standard there, they allow you to keep a wild animal captive, but you shouldn't treat them as close as possible to living in the wilderness.
The difference is that such documentaries are simply showing nature in action, and nature is a bitch. There is absolutely no comparison between a wild snake hunting whatever it can, and an animal in captivity being fed. If you put a live animal in with a captive snake, it has zero chance of escape and it could potentially harm your animal. It is entirely unnecessary when we have easy access to ft food items which were killed quickly and humanely. The pet snake could be harmed (there are many examples of this) And the prey item suffers more than is necessary. Nobody wins apart from sickos who enjoy watching living beings suffer. It should be a last resort and only done if the snakes absolutely refuses to eat ft.

I have absolutely no objections to live feedings, this is normal and natural. What I object to are "humans" crowing over the prey's distress, vs commenting in a rational manner, as shown in this video. Your video is perfectly fine, respectful of both snakes. But in some videos by others, the person rejoices in the mouse/rat/rabbit's distress: "whoo hoo, look at that stretch!" I find this repugnant, and suspect that these people have given live feeds a bad reputation. You are just fine, and the little cobra is acting according to nature, by eating live prey. Thanks for presenting this video, and for showing respect.
I think it’s more about the damage that the live feeder animal can/ will do to your pet, that’s mixed with people’s reactions could give it, it’s bad bad reputation. It’s fascinating to watch them live feed but it could potentially put the snake in danger
Wow! Amazing! I used to work in a pet store that bred rats & mice to feed our lizards & snakes. Always hated live feeding, but this was interesting watching a King Cobra feed. I understand Kevin would not have done this is there was any other way for the snake to eat. Thanks for the learning experience, Kevin.

Its not weird u cant take the wild out of the animal its natural to them To have them in captivity there limited to so much and there diet is effected also not all snakes just change to the frozen feeding via what owner wants i understand the frozen feeding and i understand live feeding its just nature
im thinking its mostly because a big part of my lifestyle is, as weird as this may sound, watching animals kill each other. i have two russian bear dogs and they hunt deer for us to eat and an invasive species of hog. so i have seen them snap a deer or hogs neck plenty of times, so maybe im just desensitized.

Ive watched a couple of will’s live feeding videos and can attest that he explains exactly why some of his snakes need live food, at that it is part of the process of getting them to eat frozen thawed. The first few I watched didn’t really bother me, they were mice that seemed quite unaware and went down quickly. There was a video where a rat was crying out in fear and escaped the enclosure a couple of times, and that was quite upsetting.
GWAR fiend yes, he didn’t want it getting behind a stack of vision cages. And really that was a fast death. If it went behind something it would have suffer for a good 10+ minutes

I hated live feeding my snakes so much, broke my heart to see the rats and mice go through so much trauma, had to watch though to make sure my snake was safe and not getting hurt. Finally got my snakes to eat frozen thawed after about 2 years of working with them. I dont keep snakes anymore but maybe one day I’ll have them again ❤️
Some people are so sensitive. Animals eat animals in the wild. It’s natural and to be honest I HATE rats and mice. So to see a snake eat a live one gives me much satisfaction. And no, animals are not people. They never have been and they never will be. Before someone makes some dumb comment about what if someone did that to your [insert family member].

This is a really good live if you have to watch one. There is care for both snakes which is so important. It's nice to not have to see all the terrible struggling and fear. People need to know how to love their feeders as much as their pets.
TeguEggu I care for my insect feeders as I know they are going to be fed to my geckos. If the feeders aren’t healthy, then your animal won’t be healthy.
I have never seen a king cobra hunt or eat before and its body language surprised me. The way it moved around and just locked its eyes on the other snake reminded me so much of my cats's body language.

Only live feed any Reptile for these reasons... 1.If you're going to make sure the food doesn't hurt the Reptile. 2. If they will only do live. 3(for Gators specifically). If you plan to release it back into the Wild...live feed.

Great video, really interesting. Now days, I feed my snakes frozen food, but back in the 1970s, I fed all my snakes live food and luckily I had non problems. Times have changed thankfully.
time does changed but we being hypocrite. it's hard and inhumane to feed live animal but yet we kill thousand of animal for food. no animal wants to die but we marching them to the slaughter house. are we genuine care about animal or virtual signaling? caring about animal is not the pinnacle of life. we have to eat and so other animals too. other animal kill to eat so we too.

It’s all part of the King Cobra’s biology and, in the end, they have to eat in order to stay alive. If the only way for your king cobra to eat is with live “not dead” prey, then that’s what you have to do. It’s not fair for you to be hated on for doing something that will keep your cobra alive. Why must you starve one of your animals to death to not being hated on? Cobras are not children to be disciplined to eat what they’re supposed to eat. King cobras will ALWAYS be king cobras. Period.
Thank you for showing this. Like you I'd prefer a frozen meal but it was interesting to see using live prey. I was surprised how long it took for the venom to work. Question if I may, does the Cobra's venom get more potent from ingesting something it kills? My friend got me interested in snakes so I'm a 58 year old gal still learning.
This is why I switched to frozen/thawed prey as soon as possible for my ball python and why none of the snakes I’ve owned since have had live prey. It sucks to watch the prey suffer before it dies.
I'm glad Will is no longer live feeding on his channel. I know there are a lot of people who enjoy watching this. I am more like Kevin and understand it is part of nature but don't enjoy it. I wouldn't have watched this it wasn't for Kevin and knowing his views on education and animals. Lastly is there a way we could buy Kevin's bands music or i guess i should say the band kevin is in :) Band camp is awesome and is a great avenue if you need a place to list other than itunes, Amazon, RUclips etc :) i just would love to listen to it on its own :)

I thought I'd hate this video because most live feeding videos are visceral and non educational. But it's so calming to know Nerd cares so much about their animals even the feeders. It was so weird seeing the prey snake not even react to the predator attacking it but striking out at the humans.
So the snake has to eat live food...who cares!! That's nature. Wild animals eat other LIVE wild animals all the time. You guys don't need to apologize for anything.
I imagine he'll be fine. As far as I know, and I am by no means an expert, the venom has to be injected through fangs. Since the rat snake isn't venomous and therefore doesn't have fangs it wouldn't transfer to the camera man. Since the venom is attacking the nervous system through (I'm assuming) the bloodstream the only way to get that venom from the rat snake would be to get the ratsnakes blood in your system. If there are any other people out there with more knowledge than me I would love to hear what you know about this whole thing. :)

This is a great video. I love all animals. That said I understand they have to eat. I had to buy chickens for my Ball Python. That's what she was fed and was hit and miss with rats. I ended up feeding both girls chicken as it was easier to get them at the same time. They didn't care for FT. They would eat 1 out of 4 at most. I was always neutral on the feeding. Wasn't into recording it, or showing the process off. I would for someone looking into getting one. I would reccomend they go to a pet store to see if they can handle what it takes to feed them. If you have to feed live then you have an obligation to watch and make sure your animal is safe
This is really hard to watch but I'm fascinated. I think if the rat snake bit somebody while it's being bitten by a cobra is there any chance that the Cobra Venom could go through the rat snake into the person? Or is that just completely stupid?
The venom is in the bloodstream. Even if the body metabolizes it so some part of it would end up in the saliva, I would think it would not happen before the snake died and if it does, the amount of venom in the saliva would be minute. I'm not a professional, just an educated guess.
I expected to hate this, and this is the worst part of snake keeping, but I feel like you made the most of an unpleasant thing. We all learned a lot.

I was very surprised at how long it took for the venom to take effect, and how unbothered the other snake seemed to be. Surprising.
Well this king cobra was quite small and young. Their venom isn't that lethal drop for drop but boy do they produce a lot of it. This means size matters in how fast their prey subcomes

I was able to get a 12 foot king cobra to feed on thawed rats by saving sheds and wrapping rats in the shed skins. Bingo instant rat burrito that smells like a snake!

@@jeroenr.2737 Its not just the prey that has no chance to survive, the predator also has no chance of hunting down its prey naturally without human assistance when it is in captivity. In nature they aren't confined to a cage and the only living being (except microorganisms) in their reach. In captivity humans determine their whole lives and fate, and if you are against that, then keeping animals isn't for you (maybe a free roaming house cat if anything)

The venom took longer becuz the snake was cold blooded so their blood doesnt circulate as fast as a warm blooded so in turn the venom took longer to get to the vitals and paralyze and what ever else.

It was very interesting to see how relatively calm the rat snake was for most of the envenomation. While live feeding is very sad and difficult to watch, not to mention potentially dangerous for the animal being fed, it can be a learning opportunity, which is exactly what you guys did. Thank you for sharing this experience in this way.
On a much lighter note; I know it was the cobra readjusting and swallowing the rat snake, every time it stopped and flexed its body, it looked like it was taking a moment to catch its breath during a speed eating competition.
With all due respect king cobras wouldn't hunt fead prey in the wild so in my opinion this so much more close to what they would do in the wild , and yes the animal.being fed could be hurt but that could very well happen in the wild aswell

Everyone freaking out about live feeding understands that even a frozen animal had to be killed to become frozen .
It's not that the food was a living animal, it's how the animal became food. There are far more humane-seeming ways to end a food animal.
I'm not saying these guys didn't give it a herculean effort; I'm sure they did. If there was another way, I'm sure they'd try it. Dying from invenomation must be terrifying.

Or should a mouse who’s been bred to be food be fed to the snake ? Also just because the animal is previously frozen doesn’t mean it was killed humanely it just means you didn’t see it happen. Tobie Whitten its no different than in the wild. I understand its "inhumane" for you but some animals are completely picky with food, I have multiple reptiles that will only eat live food. Not to be rude but thats how that goes.
Live feeding is clearly necessary at times, thank you for being respectful, responsible and educational on this subject. Nature isn't bothered by emotion but you and will are not doing it for views or sensationalism. Yes its hard to watch but it is what it is and again you covered this subject brilliantly. I am consistently amazed at how intelligent cobras are. You can just see the little gears turning in their heads. They definitely think things over before acting.
I really appreciate the way this was presented. I expected to hate it, but it was very informative and didn't feel like you were doing it for the views.
Now that I'm raising my own rats I can really empathize. Selecting a pet to feed another pet is not an easy thing to do and you want to avoid inflicting any unnecessary anguish.

@@Butterfly-mt5ml wild reptiles aren't typically trapped in a 4x2 enclosure with their prey and as such if things do go south they can potentially escape and not be murdered by said prey. If it's a necessity then it would be a practice used by all reptile owners because their animals would die otherwise.
Presumably in your down time you do the natural thing and roam around foraging and hunting for food in the wilds, rather than sitting at a computer watching videos like the rest of us, since that's how humans are technically supposed to survive.

I have always had a fondness for reptiles, but I also come from a perspective of when I was a young child my first pet was a rat, who I was extremely attached to, so naturally I have a certain love for rats. I know a lot of people in the world don't necessarily care about rats, but aren't used to seeing snakes used as feeder animals, so it's harder for them to stomach. Me, it's still hard for me to watch, but I can't look at it much differently than when rats are fed to snakes.
What really matters in the end, is being sure to be as respectful to all creatures involved, as much as possible.
I started watching Chandler's Wild Life recently. It's a pity that this king cobra can't be fed invasive pythons from Florida too, but like y'all clearly said, yours unfortunately will only eat live... and yeah I don't think anyone would want the lil' guy to get parasites, since they'd have to be frozen to kill those off.
Gotta keep the pretty lil' guy nice and healthy.
The respect and sympathetic vibes towards the prey was very refreshing. Hardly anyone is grateful for the sacrifice. I do feel bad for the lil rat snake..but I also feel bad for the infinite number of cows/pigs/chickens/etc. that most people (not including myself) eat everyday without knowing or caring where it comes from. Sometimes it’s just down right necessary since the Cobra CAN and WILL die if it doesn’t eat. I appreciate soooo much how none of you guys were treating the rat snake bad or laughing historically the entire time and obviously loving every second of the rat sanke’s pain/sacrifice/fate like MOST people who post live feeding 🙏 So thank you ALL!!! I hate channels that pit their pets against dangerous live prey they would never even encounter in the wild. I saw one where the guy fed his African bullfrog an Asian giant hornet and the hornet stung the frog to the point its eyes were streaming water. It was sad and fucked up. Who puts their pet in so much pain like that for RUclips views?
Live feeding can definitely be a tricky issue when ethics are concerned but sometimes you really don't have a choice. When I taught nature classes at a summer camp we had one snake we had to live feed because she would just ignore everything else. It was sad at first to see the mice struggle, but it ensured that our beloved snake would stay healthy and well fed! She'd had a clutch of eggs earlier that summer too so it was extra important that momma got all of her energy back!

I don't see an ethics issue personally, as long as you're feeding your animal things they would eat in the wild. If anything, owning the animal in the first place is the ethical issue. That and breeding animals just for food. I don't see a big difference between a snake killing an animal to eat, and a human killing an animal to feed to another. In my opinion, if you're not prepared for the brutality of nature then you probably shouldn't have it near you.
Yea, I’m comfortable feeding my corn snake live mice right now, but if she gets too big for mice and had to move on to rats, that scares me a little. I’m not sure if I’m mentally prepared to stun rats before feeding them to a snake, but I might have to do that since my snake was well beyond the point of eating frozen thawed even if I wanted to when I bought her.
@@metaknight115 You probably won't need to worry about feeding your corn snake rats unless she can't be sustained even on a weekly schedule of mice (though if she's not gaining weight on a weekly schedule that could be a symptom of something else causing her to lose weight), but if you do ever switch to rats I will say just be mindful of their higher fat content and that you'll probably need to span her feeding schedule out accordingly so she doesn't get overweight or obese, and I wouldn't recommend going bigger than a small rat.

I'm unfortunately in a similar situation with my BCI. I've gotten him to accept a frozen rat pup once. Every other time, he has refused to eat unless his food is live. I'm still trying to get him to switch to frozen and will continue to try for as long as I have him.
I know this is an old comment, I hope you've succeeded by nowz but in case you haven't, I actually had the same case with my BCI, she refused to eat frozen thawed rats, multies or normal mice, but she took everything live. So I tried with hotter water, but that didn't do, cause I guess it was too hot, but then I thawed the rat normally and when I was about to offer it to my snake, I dipped the rats head into hot water, that is just before boiling and it worked ever since 😁

Gabbie Ski King Cobra venom is actually not very toxic, they are only very dangerous due to the volume of venom they can inject. As a result if they don’t give a lot of venom in the bite then it won’t be so fast acting.

Cobra venom is one of the slowest acting venom of all snakes.
Snakes are cold blooded, and that one wasn't expending a ton of energy fighting back. That kept it alive longer, along with the sub-optimal bite along the tail as opposed to behind the head. The more experienced Kings bite the body, and move to behind the head as quickly as possible to inject the venom into key areas. The amount of venom and potency are good for killing quickly, but that was an inexperienced little juvenile. It likely dumped it's load in the first two bites and that made it more ineffective.
It’s what they do in the wild and if that’s the only way you can get him to eat and get to taking frozen then you just gotta do it. If you don’t like it just find another video to watch.

This was an incredibly informative video. Ive wondered how a king cobra would go about feeding on other snakes. Its not far off from what i pictured but its still breathtaking to see. King cobras are such majestic creatures and i possibly would've gone my whole life knowing they eat other snakes but never actually getting to see this so thank you.

The problem is that people nowadays rather want to hear beautiful lies than reality, in my opinion, if you can't see an animal killing an other you shouldn't have them as a pet in the first place. It's kind of a double standard there, they allow you to keep a wild animal captive, but you shouldn't treat them as close as possible to living in the wilderness.

The difference is that such documentaries are simply showing nature in action, and nature is a bitch. There is absolutely no comparison between a wild snake hunting whatever it can, and an animal in captivity being fed. If you put a live animal in with a captive snake, it has zero chance of escape and it could potentially harm your animal. It is entirely unnecessary when we have easy access to ft food items which were killed quickly and humanely. The pet snake could be harmed (there are many examples of this) And the prey item suffers more than is necessary. Nobody wins apart from sickos who enjoy watching living beings suffer. It should be a last resort and only done if the snakes absolutely refuses to eat ft.
bowser515 Most snake enthusiasts understand that it isn’t ideal for all of those reasons. Still, note that this snake requires live feeding and that you dislike it once and then leave it at that lol. It came off as if they were most concerned about backlash in the comment section.
I have absolutely no objections to live feedings, this is normal and natural. What I object to are "humans" crowing over the prey's distress, vs commenting in a rational manner, as shown in this video. Your video is perfectly fine, respectful of both snakes. But in some videos by others, the person rejoices in the mouse/rat/rabbit's distress: "whoo hoo, look at that stretch!" I find this repugnant, and suspect that these people have given live feeds a bad reputation. You are just fine, and the little cobra is acting according to nature, by eating live prey. I think it’s more about the damage that the live feeder animal can/ will do to your pet, that’s mixed with people’s reactions could give it, it’s bad bad reputation. It’s fascinating to watch them live feed but it could potentially put the snake in danger

Wow! Amazing! I used to work in a pet store that bred rats & mice to feed our lizards & snakes. Always hated live feeding, but this was interesting watching a King Cobra feed. I understand Kevin would not have done this is there was any other way for the snake to eat. Thanks for the learning experience, Kevin.

To have them in captivity there limited to so much and there diet is effected also not all snakes just change to the frozen feeding via what owner wants i understand the frozen feeding and i understand live feeding its just nature
im thinking its mostly because a big part of my lifestyle is, as weird as this may sound, watching animals kill each other. i have two russian bear dogs and they hunt deer for us to eat and an invasive species of hog. so i have seen them snap a deer or hogs neck plenty of times, so maybe im just desensitized.

Plus from what I’m reading envenomation takes longer on cold blooded animals.

Ive watched a couple of will’s live feeding videos and can attest that he explains exactly why some of his snakes need live food, at that it is part of the process of getting them to eat frozen thawed. The first few I watched didn’t really bother me, they were mice that seemed quite unaware and went down quickly. There was a video where a rat was crying out in fear and escaped the enclosure a couple of times, and that was quite upsetting.

@@watchulookinat23 in nature every animal has the chance to get away and survive, in captivity humans give the prey no chance. they get eaten 100%, except the animal that should eat isn't hungry, then it will live a couple of days longer.

I hated live feeding my snakes so much, broke my heart to see the rats and mice go through so much trauma, had to watch though to make sure my snake was safe and not getting hurt. Finally got my snakes to eat frozen thawed after about 2 years of working with them.
I dont keep snakes anymore but maybe one day I’ll have them again ❤️
Some people are so sensitive. Animals eat animals in the wild. It’s natural and to be honest I HATE rats and mice. So to see a snake eat a live one gives me much satisfaction. And no, animals are not people. They never have been and they never will be. Before someone makes some dumb comment about what if someone did that to your [insert family member].

This is a really good live if you have to watch one. There is care for both snakes which is so important. It's nice to not have to see all the terrible struggling and fear. People need to know how to love their feeders as much as their pets.
TeguEggu I care for my insect feeders as I know they are going to be fed to my geckos. If the feeders aren’t healthy, then your animal won’t be healthy.
I have never seen a king cobra hunt or eat before and its body language surprised me. The way it moved around and just locked its eyes on the other snake reminded me so much of my cats's body language.

Only live feed any Reptile for these reasons...
1.If you're going to make sure the food doesn't hurt the Reptile.
2. If they will only do live.
3(for Gators specifically). If you plan to release it back into the Wild...live feed.
That must of been hard to watch for anyone who loves rat snakes, I can watch live feedings other than ball pythons because it's like seeing my baby get eaten, I can't even watch f/t ball pythons get eaten. Nice one Donny getting bit by a snake with a cobra attached to it, at least it was the safe snake to get bit by because you know, we need you to be alive to upload these amazing videos. :)

Great video, really interesting. Now days, I feed my snakes frozen food, but back in the 1970s, I fed all my snakes live food and luckily I had non problems. Times have changed thankfully.
time does changed but we being hypocrite. it's hard and inhumane to feed live animal but yet we kill thousand of animal for food. no animal wants to die but we marching them to the slaughter house. are we genuine care about animal or virtual signaling? caring about animal is not the pinnacle of life. we have to eat and so other animals too. other animal kill to eat so we too.

It’s incredible to me you have to keep reassuring, coddling, justifying, apologizing for feeding the cobra a live snake. I don’t own any snakes I’m afraid of them. If I did own snakes I wouldn’t apologize for feeding live food.

It’s all part of the King Cobra’s biology and, in the end, they have to eat in order to stay alive. If the only way for your king cobra to eat is with live “not dead” prey, then that’s what you have to do. It’s not fair for you to be hated on for doing something that will keep your cobra alive. Why must you starve one of your animals to death to not being hated on? Cobras are not children to be disciplined to eat what they’re supposed to eat. King cobras will ALWAYS be king cobras. Period.

Thank you for showing this. Like you I'd prefer a frozen meal but it was interesting to see using live prey. I was surprised how long it took for the venom to work. Question if I may, does the Cobra's venom get more potent from ingesting something it kills? My friend got me interested in snakes so I'm a 58 year old gal still learning.

This is why I switched to frozen/thawed prey as soon as possible for my ball python and why none of the snakes I’ve owned since have had live prey. It sucks to watch the prey suffer before it dies.

I'm glad Will is no longer live feeding on his channel. I know there are a lot of people who enjoy watching this. I am more like Kevin and understand it is part of nature but don't enjoy it.

I thought I'd hate this video because most live feeding videos are visceral and non educational. But it's so calming to know Nerd cares so much about their animals even the feeders.
It was so weird seeing the prey snake not even react to the predator attacking it but striking out at the humans.
So the snake has to eat live food...who cares!! That's nature. Wild animals eat other LIVE wild animals all the time. You guys don't need to apologize for anything.

I imagine he'll be fine. As far as I know, and I am by no means an expert, the venom has to be injected through fangs. Since the rat snake isn't venomous and therefore doesn't have fangs it wouldn't transfer to the camera man. Since the venom is attacking the nervous system through (I'm assuming) the bloodstream the only way to get that venom from the rat snake would be to get the ratsnakes blood in your system. If there are any other people out there with more knowledge than me I would love to hear what you know about this whole thing. :)

This is a great video. I love all animals. That said I understand they have to eat. I had to buy chickens for my Ball Python. That's what she was fed and was hit and miss with rats. I ended up feeding both girls chicken as it was easier to get them at the same time. They didn't care for FT. They would eat 1 out of 4 at most. I was always neutral on the feeding. Wasn't into recording it, or showing the process off. I would for someone looking into getting one. I would reccomend they go to a pet store to see if they can handle what it takes to feed them.
If you have to feed live then you have an obligation to watch and make sure your animal is safe

This is really hard to watch but I'm fascinated. I think if the rat snake bit somebody while it's being bitten by a cobra is there any chance that the Cobra Venom could go through the rat snake into the person? Or is that just completely stupid?
The venom is in the bloodstream. Even if the body metabolizes it so some part of it would end up in the saliva, I would think it would not happen before the snake died and if it does, the amount of venom in the saliva would be minute. I'm not a professional, just an educated guess.
