This is freeing to watch. Your brain must going a million miles an hour! It turned out beautiful! I love the light shining out through the dark. It’s like our world today. Thank you for allowing us to watch.
LOVE your technique and color choices!!! as a fellow abstract artist I admire your free stroke movements, confident color mixing and all around spontaneity!!!
The colors are so rich I thought it was oils! Thank you for sharing your process. For a self taught artist, I feel quite intimidated by abstract art, like there’s some secret only “real” artists are in on. Very rarely do you get the privilege of seeing someone’s process in abstract art! Most of the ones I have seen are either way too complex and expensive material-wise or just kind of trite in a way? Anyways, much love and appreciation from NC!
Sarah, thank you - from NC! I’m self taught too - the only secret to abstract painting is knowing design fundamentals, then implementing that in your work to have a voice different than others. It’s only taken me 30 years! I have several 6 part video series that show you my process step by step.
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 had no idea you were in NC! I saw you are teaching a class for arts of the Carolinas-if I can scrounge up the money I’m signing up for it!
I LIKE WHEN WE ARE ALL SURE THAT YOU HAVE FINISHED TO PAINT.. YOU CARRY ON TO IMPROVE IT.. BECAUSE YOU SEE SOMETHING WE CANNOT SEE.. AND YOU MAKE IT BETTER.. I MEAN TO LOOK BETTER... AT THE END YOU PAINT WITH THAT BRIGHT YELLOW AND THE WHOLE PAINTING BECOMES DIFFERENT.. BECOMES BRIGHTER!!!
Ayyo Tube, you will don’t worry! It just takes practice. Th more you paint the better you will be, as long as you learn and understand design fundamentals first. Thanks for watching!
I love your work and am sad I could not make your workshop when you were in town. Can you tell me please if you let each color dry before applying the next color?
Aha! I figured you’d need lots of brushes and large amounts of paint! OK so I really want to have a go. Will stick to basics two complimentary colors plus white and black. Where can I find cheap brushes and what size should I buy Appreciate any info👍
Connie Brechtel, brushes are a personal choice - what works for me may not work for you. Do some research, buy a few brushes and test them out. I use natural bristle brushes, but some people prefer nylon. you won't know until you try them.
Great work David. Some of those piles of paint on your palette look lighter than you would normally get from a tube/tub. Do you pre mix more usable colors and store them in tubs? I can see the benefit to this when it comes to spontaneity of the work flow. Thankyou
Paul Milner some of what you’re seeing on the palette are colors that I have mixed with white, that’s why their lighter. I do mix my own colors and put them in the jars, but I do it because I can’t buy the colors, not because I am making colors more useable. Thanks for watching!
Love your art and the colors you use! In an earlier video, you mentioned letting the paint dry so the colors don't get muddy. But I'm watching you paint purple over red and it looks good. Am I confused?
Rhonda Pawlan, I don't paint in layers and like to paint wet into wet. If you are inexperienced in painting it is easier to let it dry rather than paint back into it. It depends what your color combo is. Complementary colors can be dangerous if you don't know how to stay out of the " mud."
Love your style. The freedom. QUESTION ABOUT PAINT. I saw your jars of Dan Smith acrylics on one of your other pages... somewhere. Doesn't look like DS makes acrylics anymore. Boohoo. Sniff. Cry. Rant. Rage. What's the brand you're using in this video? I've just started painting again after years of nada and I'm trying different brands. You may have stockpiled DS, but I didn't. Are those off the shelf paints? Help. I'm doing my first ever REAL abstract in about 5 minutes and I'm stalling by asking this question about acrylic brands you like. PLEASE let me know what your using here. I want to take one of your workshops but I have to figure out which dates will work. I look forward to meeting you at a workshop in NC or Central California. ps AVERAGE WHITE BAND! High energy! Fabulisimo.
Tina Gregoire I use mostly Golden Heavy Body Acrylics, and use a few colors from Nova Color Paint. I have a couple of videos on all the materials I use. The DS jars are from many years ago -I still use the jars even though the paint has been gone for years. Now go paint!

what brand of acrylic paints do you use? lovely vibrant colours!
steph gallagher there are several other comments in this post where I answer that question. Golden, Nova Color and Utrecht.
Why do you never come to California for workshops
I’ve been to CA a couple of times for workshops. It’s along way for a few days of teaching. I am cutting back on my travel beginning in 2021 and That also means shorter ravel trips. I’ll be in New Mexico for two weeks this year teaching - that will be as close as I get.

Welcome Respected Sir
Would you mind sharing the color pink you used? I’ve been looking everywhere for a bright hot pink but haven’t found one I like!
Fluorescent pink and fluorescent magenta - this was several years ago when I was using those colors from Nova Color Paint.
Gorgeous painting, I don't envy you having to wash all those brushes out though. Do you have a special way of doing them as that is the part I hate most about painting lol.
Diane Howe Art I just wash them out with water and a wire brush.

Holy shit! It's AMAZING! YOU ARE AMAZING! Hey, do you lisyen to music? If so what? Thanks for sharing your art work
Heather Quaine thank you. I always listen to music while I paint. All kinds - usually something that gets me moving like the song in this video.
Love your work. Do you seal your paintings after they are completed?
Nina McGowan thank you. I do not seal my paintings - just personal preference.
You paint with such confidence and flow, it’s amazing! What paints have you used here? Are these acrylics or oil paints?
I'm guessing acrylic but it looks like he's diluting with water which is strange.
Very impressive. But I don’t want to get it off my walls. Was you also a dancer in your last life. Hope Ican it one of these times. Thank you.
carol johnson I have a dedicated studio space so I don’t have to get the paint off the walls.
