This is Everything you missed from the 2023 Formula 1 Pre-Season Testing.
Do you want to know who was REALLY fast or REALLY slow? You'll have to wait until qualifying or the race this week, BUT I can help you break through the noise and try to understand what teams were doing during winter testing, who COULD be fast, and who might be sandbagging (I really hate that word).
The big talking points - HOW fast is Red Bull Really? Can Ferrari challenge them?
Is Aston Martin going to take 3rd place away from Mercedes?
And what about Alpine and McLaren? They looked like they had horrible pre-season tests.

Ive been watching you since your first few thousand subscribers and your watchalongs are simply the best due to the insight you have on the sport. As a former karting driver, I appreciate the technical side of f1 greatly and you are one of the best in this game. Your decision to leave f1 for content creation is admirable and I can only imagine how happy you must be to see it paying off!

One minor thing for this video that confused me for a second, I think you switched the color labels for Alonso and Drugovich at 6:00.

Alonso's fastest lap was actually a little scruffy, and he went wide at the last corner - Ant Davidson said he lost around 2 tenths. Alpine were bouncing and locking a lot in Ocon's hands, they said they were running with a stiff suspension set up and testing for other circuits. Nearly all the teams have upgrade packages coming this week so the pecking order could still change. Ferrari and Alpine were experimenting with high DF rear wings which again skews the lap times.
All excellent points. I *know* alpine were doing some weird stuff... But like... Yeah I'm still not buying it 😅😅
I'm just interested to see how we're going to be once we get to Q3 on Saturday. Not expecting masses of change at the top end of the field, but I'm always willing to be pleasantly surprised.

For me testing was as expected including AM's push toward the front. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Fernonso can do this yr. The man is on a mission, as are the other 19 pilots but the Spanish flyer has a twinkle of his glory days in his eyes and we love it. Again thank you very much 👍

Regardless of how fast or slow these teams are, I'm giving everybody an A+ on vehicle appearance. All cars look phenomenal.
TEST only able to tell 75% of how fast each car can run,,, yes,, only 75%,,,
and what do you mean the rest of 25% ???
That's the secret of the team to hide,, until---- qualify of the first race,,, absolutely this way,, they can restrict the throttle and keep some reserve,, or they can do something else,,,
any how,,, just wait to see qualify lap,,, that will be the real deal,,,,

How is negative deg a thing? Did Alonso have problems warming up the tyres? Or did they under inflate the tyres? Or maybe they overcompensated the balance for the stint? What does it say about the performance envelope? Does it mean it is wider or narrower?
Not sure you'll answer this but now, after two races, would you thought that Aston may be fighting for 2nd this year?

Aston race simulations look REALLY good. They won't qualify in the front 2 rows, but they really might be getting some podiums this year in the races

Why is ferrari had so much tire deg compare to other teams? Is it because of suspension design, car weight and driving style? Is their aero design also affects their tyre performance because last year they had the same problem?
alpina had lovely testing they ran all there test with ease i dont think they have any major issues.. Alfa look the best Farrari in huge trouble new rear wing so bad they had to remove it in p1 loool and a huge spin off when trying to pin the car gotta love the drama in the first 5 races every team on the grid will have problems redbull keep getting oil leaks and has raised its head again in p1 in both cars mercades look strong as per apart from a hydrolic sensor in GRs car and they was also running last year rear wing loseing rear traction gut in p1 the car was glued to the track but was in and out the pits makeing ajustments
Fernando is going to be a proper headache for the strategists at the top three. If they don't get it right, they'll have a feisty world champion, with probably the best race craft of anyone on the grid, and sat in a car that sustains its lap times, waiting to take advantage
I really hope they built a monster race car.... honestly!
When you have a fast car then is harder to make mistake. I mean if Aston tyres deg really so amazing, then Ferrari can go longer or even under cut ,but is will not last long ,because they eating the tyres. In tyres you can find seconds but in the car not.
Hey Blake, what's going on with tires this season? Do they have more compounds to choose from? Were the compounds changed by Pirelli? Sorry, I'm out of the loop
It's OK. The only thing that's changed: C1 is now C0 and there's a new C1 compound. And the front tyre construction has changed to provide more front end

Hate this video! It is the best video I've seen from practices and perfectly showed why Aston is strong. I just don't like Aston and didn't want to accept they were fast. Do you think it might be trak specific? Great stuff but I think you mixed up the names on the AMR analysis graph (@6:10). The better times are from ALO (as stated in the video) and the same graphs are later used with ALOs name when compared to RUS.
Absolutely the label was swapped. I tried to add a note in the "tag" in the top right and in the description. Good spot!

Alpine didn't use two softest tyres that were available so that's why they didn't climb up the order
Not using the softer tyres were the least of their problems and not worth that much lap time.

-They almost never used the 8th gear
-They almost never used the DRS
-They were using the gas pedal 10% less than other teams
I get what you're saying, but please, in context of anything you've seen or experienced before, explain this to me.
If they were "sandbagging" this massively, all of the running they did just implies that they have no clue what's going on with their car and they "wasted" 3 days of testing.
@@brrrake the question you should've asked yourself was not "were they sandbagging", it was "how much were they sandbagging"
After quali we can see that when most teams only got half a second to a bit more than a second quicker, Ocon got two and a half second quicker than his fastest testing lap
Why did they do that? I don't know. But what I do know is that they were definitely hiding their cards in testing
There's always practice sessions to run light fuel
There's no substitute for 3 days of testing all of the compounds on the same track though.

Unbelievable that Red Bull continues to have an advantage. You have to wonder what they have figured out that Ferrari and Mercedes can't.

Bottas had a really fast lap
I think Haas had a problem developing last year cause they were too busy spending and fixing micks car that reflects in their choice of very experienced drivers this year

Maybe the new terms will be front and back field. With redbull, Ferrari, Mercedes and aston Martin at the front and the rest at the back, because it will be very close between teams. I think this season…

The redbull looks like laser guided.. and the ferrari have a phenomenal rotation on the corners.. i dont know if that will be bad for ferrari but looks good to me, except that they dont put the power down faster than redbull at the exit of those corners

Hi! This was your first video that I saw, so please forgive me the basic question, but where do you get the telemetry data from? I noticed that your graphs do not mention the source. I would suggest to do so.
I generate the graphs using a library of python functions I have developed. All of it calls on the fastf1 python api! :)

is the labeling for the chart at 5:55 accurate? I think the names / colors are off. You mentioned ALO's deg being negative but here it shows that its DRU with negative deg.

Would love a video where you explain in detail what you are looking for in those graphs and other similar ones.
Also, when you r comparing the graphs of two drivers, would luv it if you could point out some of the key numbers that show how one driver outperformed another
