the soul of a city is shown in how its inhabitants come together in solidarity after a tragedy.

I disagree. Remember 9/11? Solidarity did happen....but it soon faded. Humans forget too soon and too easily. I love the sentiment but reality isn't a soul of a city being represented after a tragedy. It's solidarity at all times, not when shit hits the fan.

True, but it's really not that bad. It happened in the port and thankfully NOT in the city. Imagine that. The thing l worry about is the stability of the closest structures near the blast. The buildings need to be thoroughly inspected.

In western capitals this would never happen because the developed world has regulations and laws in place that would make this nearly impossible. Western capitals also have city workers and massive emergency teams in place that would manage and support a disaster such as this. And thats incorrect, i had a tornado go through my city last year and neighbors were rebuilding homes for those who lost theirs.

    I live in Lebanon.
This explosion hit the Beirut docs 6 minutes away from my house.
My parents and I are fortunate to own a house in the mountains far from the capital on the other
side of the country when this horrific explosion hit and took down our building, killing 3 of my
neighbors including my childhood friend Omar Matta.
Writing this is one of the hardest
things I've had to do. My hands are shivering from the sight of this video. For those of you who don't know much about Lebanon, in the past few months,
    our country has
    faced an uprising by the
    people to overthrow our corrupt
government, an ongoing economic recession, the resurfacing of COVID
19, and today, this alleged terrorist attack that took my childhood friend from me and left me and my family without a home. Our country is beautiful but it is currently crumbling in ashes. we're trapped in our homes because of the toxic chemicals in the air not to forget that most of our bridges are threatened to collapse because of our shitty infrastructure. Pray for us, no human being should go through and experience this.
Hear my cries as this is the only way to voice our story.

Sorry I'm paranoid cos I have thought for the last couple of years that Lebanon would descend into civil war again thus allowing the Israelis in. So don't like anyone suggesting anything that might be interpreted as the explosion was caused by an attack or sabotage or by a foreign attack.
I believe it was an accident caused by negligence. It doesn't look very well maintained i've been through on a bus.
But yeah its horrible for the people there and I have a feeling it will be the Shiah who lose more jobs but they won't have a voice at all even though South Beirut supports the Amal Movement mainly.
The blast really affected Dawra that is the through route to tripoli in the North, not to mention Bourj Hamoud where the Armenians and another lot of Shiah reside.
A language school I studied at, in Germayze is in bits, no-one hurt though and I don't know about the hostel I stay at near there, but a couple of hundred yards West of it. Waiting to hear.

@@lasarith2 For it to be 2KT, NH4NO3 must be mixed with fuel oil to create ANFO, a different kind of explosive. We know that there was NH4NO3 in the warehouse, not ANFO. NH4NO3 cannot go this high on its own.
