What were they finding to eat on those logs? I looked like there was more than one thing; the whitish stuff and something else. Fungus? Insects? Fascinating.

3 years later and someones finally giving you an answer - Asian elephants can actually feed on the bark itself in the dry / cold seasons :)
Seems the white thing on the log is salt, placed by the photographer. Elephants like salt.
