“Hey you guys” as I’m from northern Midwest. Can’t beat that, eh? 😂 Representing Scandinavian heritage. We celebrate and enjoy: Cabbage rolls, sauerkraut balls and pickled herring that have been tied to our families' New Year's mealtime traditions. The North loves their roast pork and sauerkraut too! YUM! Also at the stroke of midnight we toast with a piece of pickled herring on a tookpick to bring wealth & prosperity in the new year. It’s the shiny herring that symbolizes good fortune. HappY New Year from the frozen tundra! 💙🐟🌬❄️🎊
Having lived in Europe the last 40 years, I made a liberated version of this since I bought collard greens last night. It will bring good fortune all the same. Washed, drained, "spined" and julienned one bunch of fresh Florida collards. Chopped one smallish white onion, sauteed ii in olive oil/ butter, til golden. Added the collards, sauteed til wilted and nicely coated. Added a 1/2 C chicken stock. Cooked gently with lid on for 5 minutes. Added one can drained black beans. And a couple of heaping spoonfulls of fresh store-bought hot salsa. And a bit more hot sauce. 5 more minutes. Thats it. Cooked. Delicious. None of this cooking for 2 hours stuff, no pork or pork grease, no fake smoke flavoring, no nitrates. Superstition be gone! Make yourself a nutritious meal. Had mine with grilled grass fed lamb steak. New Years Day new recipe!
You hit all of the fabulous southern foods for a delicious New Year's meal! Blessings and good fortune and health to all! Happy New Year! Love your videos!
Yesss! You had everything! The only thing my family adds is yams! I am ready for my collard greens & black eye peas now! 😋 ❤🥰 I have never tried tomato gravy before but would love to try it!
Fried pork chops and tomato gravy is one of my favorite meals, but we do it differently. No cream gravy, just the tomato gravy. We wait until we've fried up all the pork chops, then we deglaze the pan we cooked the pork chops in with the tomatoes. We leave some of the grease (which is mostly bacon fat) in the pan and scrape all the fond off the bottom. Then season it to taste.
Thanks for posting ❤️❤️❤️ Great beautiful basic meal ❤️ Got my black-eyed peas soaking for Hoppin’ John. That’s a new one on me about having tomatoes 🍅 for a NYD meal 😊 What does the tomato symbolize for the New Year?? I do use homemade chunky tomato chili sauce on my peas & beans as a condiment. In my Mississippi backwoods kitchen we eat : black-eyed peas=coinage & luck (interesting CW history story behind it), greens/cabbage=folding money and pork because the hoofs and snout (rooting forward👍) of the pig are forward...progression for coming New Year…Cornbread/cornpone made with yellow cornmeal=gold. The only odd tradition told to me by Granny I have never done is put a coin in my cornpone batter before baking….similar to the baby baked in a king 👑 cake😮. Happy 2022 ya'll🎊🎉🎈🥂🍾
Love your video, don't fix pork chops, do hog jowls or pork belly and cheese grits, never dine the tomato gravy might try it this year, someone told me to cut coins with carrots Happy New Year

With the exception of the pork chop these are all Black American foods and New Year’s traditions. Too often “Southern” is used as a catchphrase for what is really Black American culture, created by those enslaved in the American south. Let’s start giving credit where credit is due.
I agree. I found this video to show my northern friend and another friend in Britain why I was making my black eyed peas with collards and wet corn bread for New Year's. I wish she had mentioned that this tradition actually came from enslaved people in the south. I shared that information with my friends though. Our tradition here is to cook our black eyed peas with a ham hock. I don't know anything about pork chops on New Years
Yes... because blacke eyed peas, pork and greens are from Africa 🙄. This is SOUTHERN food and belongs to ALL southerners! Why is everything about race? Racist FOOD? OMG I've heard it all!
As for speech... think about it. Slaves didn't initially know English... so where would they learn it from? This is how AAVE was learned.. from the deep south. We STILL talk like that! Omg stop putting RACE in EVERYTHING!
Nope. Not in my house. The only year we did this meal, my father was killed on the 18th in a plane crash. None of those foods brought us anything good.
Jesus said foods that you eat don’t make you unclean it’s what comes out of your mouth that makes a man unclean. all food is good to eat. It only talks about pork in the old testament, but Jesus came to bring the new covenant in the New Testament, and Jesus is the son of God and he came straight from heaven. His the way the truth and the life. Just remember what comes out of your mouth is what makes you unclean not what goes in it❤
Lord have mercy!! You are every country boy’s dream!!
Sparkle Gingham is a mood.
Black eyed peas on January 1st for good luck.😇✌🙏

Where are the yams or sweet tato es?
Sweet potatoes aren’t required like the other dishes but are good paired with this meal.

My family never adds sweet potatoes.

I totally concur! These foods were passed on to the slave owners from the enslaves!

I'm sorry for your loss.
@ Thank you.
The Bible tells you not to eat pork!
The Old Testament does. Jesus and the New Covenant say that pork was made clean. Read it again.
