    Very interesting, thank you for sharing your techniques. I remember the first time I tried to cast a sculpture. I made a clay sculpture of King Tut's Death Mask. I painted it with several layers of liquid laytex and thought it was pretty thick so I didn't reinforce it with plaster or burlap. I kept the mold in on piece and just peeled it off my clay sculpture. Then I filled the mold with plaster and it the mold expanded like a water balloon. That was a sad day.

    Thanks this is really helpful!
    A few questions about the silicone paste if you don't mind:
    -Does it work with shellacked sulfa clay, or does it not get along chemically.
    (smooth-on said their "poyo putty doesn't like shellac)
    -Will the pressing process leave marks in my piece?
    It was done in a medium firmness oil based clay.
    -Do you think 1 Kilo (quart) would be enough for a 24in tall figure?

    • @EirikArnesenArt
      @EirikArnesenArt  2 года назад +1

      I'm not sure about shellac, you should check if tin-based silicone react to shellac. I didn't think it would but bets to check!
      No it will not leave marks as long as you keep silicone between your clay and your finger.
      Probably not. I buy a 5 kg bucket and use most of it for a figure slightly bugger then that.

      Yes. Compleat Sculptor in New York has a silicone called Resilpom Silicone Putty. It’s close to the same thing I used here. Plaster is easy to come by. And the material I cast it in is called Aqua-Resin.

    Thank you for sharing this. I hope to see you do a video of the casting process (hopefully in resin and plaster).
    Question. Why do you prefer the paste silicone rather than the regular one?

    • @jascermerced8635
      @jascermerced8635 5 лет назад +1

      By the way, what do you do about the wire on the top of the head? Does the silicone and mother mold go around it and then you plug it up?

    • @EirikArnesenArt
      @EirikArnesenArt  5 лет назад +1

      I have videos of the King of the Rusted Crown being cast in aqua-resin planned for very soon! They're filmed already and I just need to edit them and narrate. I prefer paste silicone because it's a little less messy, less wasteful and easier to control. But if you are trained and good with liquid silicone I'm sure you can do the exact same thing I'm doing without making a mess and with equal amounts of control. This is just the way I was taught and it's quick and easy!

    • @EirikArnesenArt
      @EirikArnesenArt  5 лет назад +1

      The wire in the top of the head makes a small holes in the silicone that I'll just plug up with some clay when I cast it. And then fix it when I'm fixing the seams later.

    interesting process, I've never encountered silicon paste before. what we have are brush-on silicons that are either slow set or fast set. Which is more troublesome in ensuring an even application.
    Aside from having to have the figure to lie down to create a two part mold. What other advice could you give regarding my process given my material limitation? Apologies if my question doesn't cover this scope. Thank you for the informative video

    • @EirikArnesenArt
      @EirikArnesenArt  4 года назад +2

      I would suggest looking into matrix molds! They are very hard and complex to make but the thickness is a lot easier to control and you can do them standing upright as well and cut the silicone into two later on. Doesn't really work for big pieces unless you're a big crew but if you're doing smaller pieces and want the best mold possible, matrix molds are the way to go!

    • @EirikArnesenArt
      @EirikArnesenArt  5 лет назад +2

      I assume you are talking about the catalyst for the silicone? You mix it with the silicone so the silicone sets up. There are silicone that air dry (for sealing windows and tiles) but silicone using catalyst is better for these types of applications.

    • @EirikArnesenArt

      It's a faster catalyzor that speeds up the curing time of the silicone. Where you can buy it in the UK I'm not sure. Ask the place where you buy your silicone for a fast setting catalyzor!

    Nice! to bolt it together do you have to drill through both the shell and silicone mould?

    • @EirikArnesenArt
      @EirikArnesenArt  5 лет назад

      You can, but you don't have to. In this case I didn't drill, the two halves of the mold is held together with bungie cords or tape when I cast.

    Hi Eirik, thanks for sharing your ability. I live in Southeast Asia so have to import the silicone. The initial catalyst you use is cata 83, but what are the pink and yellow? Should the silicone start to set before adding the other layers? Thanks!

    • @EirikArnesenArt
      @EirikArnesenArt  5 лет назад +1

      Hello! The yellow is the standard catalyst that comes with the silicone. The pink catalysor is a faster setting catalysor. I don’t know the name, I’m sorry. I’ll comment on here if I find it! Thank you for watching and commenting 🙂!

    Oh and what if the original is a very rare expensive sculpture, can you cut the sillicone without cutting into the original?

    • @EirikArnesenArt
      @EirikArnesenArt  4 года назад

      Yes I guess so if you cut carefully. but this is never the case, the sculpture is never valuable until it's cast into a more permanent material.
