I taught Dawn when she was in 8th grade. She was so smart and get her work done in a class and come find me a P. E. Teacher and challenge me to a one on one. She would beat me every time. Later after she graduated from college she came back and mentored some of my students from Fitsimmons. I am so proud of all she has accomplished.
Dang she beat you 1 on 1? Did you ever win against her? Pretty cool that you helped her along the way. Wish I had a teacher like that growing up. I had some very negative coaches and teachers as a young person. It was very damaging to me. They were bitter and angry adults and didn't want us to succeed. I dont know why I had to go through that, but I'm always happy for people that got to have positive experiences. I'm not surprised when they are successful in life.
Love this woman. The power she exudes through such an incredibly humble spirit- while at the same time displaying unapologetic confidence is absolutely amazing.
Dawn Staley is the truth because of her Authenticity and she shows people who she is more through her actions than words. Her silence speaks way louder than her voice when she does & I appreciate that so much in her since I’m an extrovert by nature… can’t wait to see what next season brings..
God doesn't give out gifts and talents according to one's zip code. Dawn Staley has blessed us by using her gifts. I am so very proud of her! The media in Philadelphia should give her more coverage.
They should, but why would they? ..."the world hated ME and so they will hate you.." remember that verse from the greatest story ever told?...The LORD exposes people by their fruits
I’ve been a Dawn Staley fan for as long as I can remember! I understand exactly where she’s coming from when it comes to her players and how she wants to protect them. Kudos to Coach Dawn Staley! A fan for life!
The love and support shown during this interview was felt through the screen. I respect the Pivot for allowing Dawn to give her perspective on great topics. 💯
I’m so happy they finally got Coach Staley on the show, one of the Greatest coaches ever AND one of the Greatest Players ever, Pioneer legend, All that ❤️💯🙏🏾 She’s a true 1 of 1
I have literally been waiting for this interview since the Pivot began! Dawn Staley is truly a legend. She has been a dominant player and now coach! I respect her authenticity and her showing up as herself consistently without bending to pressure of assimilating.
I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to actually meet Coach Staley when she came to a tournament in New Orleans last year. She is so down to earth and did not have an entourage with her, just her SOLO.
I can't believe I missed this interview, I'm glad they mentioned it recently and I found it. I know y'all don't have a lot of repeat guests but you have to get Coach back ❤
I’m glad that I’m finally catching the premier showing of this podcast. I’m a huge Dawn Staley fan… super proud of her as a woman mentor/example to follow!
Thank you, Pivot Podcast, thank you, Coach Staley. I have been grieving since March 31st, but we all know,in our hearts, who the real National Champions are. South Carolina is #1 and will always be. God bless you all from this 72 year old fam from Georgia.
Coach Staley is THE truth!! She's an ICON and an example for present and future coaches (of all sports) to learn from. Continued blessings, success and happiness💯🏀 P.S Champ is too cute!!
I love, love the Pivot. I was a fan of Dawn's as an athlete. However, as she has evolved beyond the role of a player, to coach, advocate, and beyond, I can't get enough of watching her work. She is unapologetically speaking up and raising the next generation of boss women. My God, count them, the number of young ladies she will get to influence and release to the world. As a person who lives in a world with a passion for youth and a desire to make the world better, you bet believe, you move alone, and spend time doing work that seems/feels odd/boring. However, spending time at the trial is indeed way bigger than a hobby/curiosity. To change the game, you got to understand and know all the strategies. I can't wait to see how that trial and others manifest in her mission. I am grateful for the platform you young men have created. Keep doing work!
As a North Philly native that grew up in the exact same neighborhood as she it's a fact that we are determined to make it . I've been following Coach Staley since she first came on the scene. I'm very proud of her and it's fantastic to see her rise above the negativity. God bless 🙌 🙏 you Dawn ❤

Great guest and conversation! The Pivot is great show! In Feb 1992, I had the good fortune as an undergrad at UM to watch an historic matchup of UM vs UVA which was played to a sellout game with UVA winning 75-74. Dawn has been one of my favorite people for a long time. Her historic run on the USA team to playing in the wnba even seeing her on the TV show Martin as a kid. She’s an incredible women and a great coach.
I watched Dawn Staley play for Olym teams and WNBA Charlotte Sting. What a terrific player to be so small. Scoring, rebounding, passing. The way she controlled the game. Listening to this interview I found she and I share many personality traits. She said coaching found her. That's good for young blk girls who want to persue basketball as a career path. She is successful in life, will serve as a great mentor for them. With her as coach I feel confident SC will make another run for the championship.
The Pivot continues to set the standard after each interview. Nobody and i mean nobody does it like you boys do it. Dawn was amazing. Another well done!
DAWN STALEY IS AN ICON! I have watched her play since the ATL Olympics. She was always my favorite player. I have both of her jerseys. ABA and WNBA. Her team plays the way she does and did; HARD! She was an INCREDIBLE PG Watch the footage. Just Amazing! I am happy that she didn't disappear from the sports stage. She has earned everything she has. Still a big fan and I am proud of her!

That life can drive you to do better. Congratulations on your third championship Coach Staley. So proud of a Raymond Rosen, Dobbins Tech alumni.
I'm looking at Coach Dawn and her mannerism and she reminds me of someone! Coach Dawn reminds me of the late Left Eye! Her warmth, her sincerity! Does anyone else see it? Congratulations Coach Dawn🤗👍❤️🙏
I absolutely see it. I was actually thinking the same thing. Maybe that's why Dawn is my girl because Lefteye was my girl (TLC is my favorite group ever) Two Philly legends for sure. And if I'm not mistaken Lisa was from North Philly also.❤
Man this interview touched on so many things that needed to be addressed especially the officiating in the women’s final four!! But we are truly blessed to have coach Staley at the university of South Carolina!! I hope we get to watch her retire as a Gamecock! RC,FREDDY T, Channing keep this thing going!

Good morning to THE PIVOT and everyone involved with the show.Once again great show being a sports fanatic I have followed Dawn Staley since UVA days going to the Olympics gold medals winner. Championship College Coach putting that work in to be great.I truly enjoyed this episode today Coach Staley voice needs to be heard thanks to THE PIVOT we get that .Keep up the great work continue mentoring everyone that are part of your life journey thru Coaching your players and everyone involved.
This the one!!! Loveeeeee Dawn Staley! Everything she does, has done and all she stands for and fights for!! Loveeeeee her. Thank y’all for the acknowledgment of a wonderful person. 🤟🏾♉️💜
This is one of the best, I'm a big Dawn Staley fan followed her since her college days. She's not afraid to voice her opinion about racism and officiating and how they was purposely taken out of that Iowa game. She's a living LEGEND 🙏🏿 & shout out to your brother Laurence haven't seen him in a while ❤
40:50 - "we'll be hunting rather than being the hunter" - yeah, that lasted for like 5 minutes lol! After the 1st game of the season, ppl thought they should've been #1 in the polls and they were, after maybe a couple weeks.
Great interview! Love me some Dawn Staley❤❤❤ I am not a fan of women’s basketball but let me tell y’all, I have watched Coach Staley play back in the day and always admired her game. ❤ Thanks to everyone who makes The Pivot great!
Did she tho? Because it sounded to me like the officiating which impacted Boston being benched is what was a huge reason for their loss. That SC wasn’t allowed to play their game. In the press conference she basically implied the Iowa coach made racist comments. Coach Bluder is far from being racist and that was wrong. She set up the Iowa team to appear being racist and that they won because because they’re white. Iowa played hard defense and they worked their ass off to win that game. They shut Boston down and that was the plan and it worked.
@@Vashby78 multiple things can be true. She got out coached, the players got outplayed, the refs were horrible and Iowas coach (and the press) said racist tropes that dehumanized the SC player (“bar fighters” and thugs)… the way the world acted when AR taunting CC is proof of the hypocrisy. Look at what the First Lady did by trying to Iowa a pawn bc she knew who was backing Iowa and why many (not all) of their fans supported them. And the crazy thing is BOTH CC & AR where ok with things bc they know what happens on the court. the players just wanna play. They wanna talk trash (and yes some of it is racist), but they want to play and move on with life. It’s the media that keeps it going after the coaches expose it.
@@atlsuperstar yes I listened to the entire interview. She did take responsibility for the loss and then added her but the officiating, but we couldn’t play our game how we usually do and we were labeled so and so. Coach Bluder said it was going to be a bar fight going into the game. Where I come…which is from Iowa when I think of a bar fight, I think of old drunk people going at it for the stupidest of reasons and defending their name til the end or until the cops show up. Wasn’t a dig at her SC girls, it was a way for her to express how hard the hawks were going to have to defend and fight for their team. What people don’t understand is that teams come from different parts of the country where things have different meanings. It doesn’t make a coach or a state racist. It’s not everyone in the world against people of color for every damn thing.
I taught Dawn when she was in 8th grade. She was so smart and get her work done in a class and come find me a P. E. Teacher and challenge me to a one on one. She would beat me every time. That quiet or subtle intensity has always been a part of her game. People recognize a real one and she's been that since North Philly.

She's a living LEGEND 🙏🏿 & shout out to your brother Laurence haven't seen him in a while ❤
@@halomaster9640 she doesn’t have to name names, she literally named the persons job title. Do your own research
@Halomaster96 no one cares about BYU. Please stop varying about it.
Trolls gonna trill
40:50 - "we'll be hunting rather than being the hunter" - yeah, that lasted for like 5 minutes lol! After the 1st game of the season, ppl thought they should've been #1 in the polls and they were, after maybe a couple weeks.
Love coach, been rocking with her for decades. She's amazing.
So inspired by you Coach Dawn 😊❤ so proud if you
Great interview! Love me some Dawn Staley❤❤❤ I am not a fan of women’s basketball but let me tell y’all, I have watched Coach Staley play back in the day and always admired her game. ❤ Thanks to everyone who makes The Pivot great!
Dawn Staley, yessssss!!!! You guys finally got her on the Podcast! 🏆 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 💎 The ending is classic 😂
Great conversation!! Pívot keep killing it!!
Love that Dawn took responsibility in how they played in the semi final game
@@Vashby78 Did you listen to the interview at all? She clearly did!

They ALWAYS hear what they want to hear.
Love this GREAT woman/coach.
Will always love Dawn Staley!!!! My daughter played in her league in Philly when she was in middle school!
Dawn Staley, you are definitely Hall of Fame in my book. You are a class act.
