Let's start with a 50% tariff on Tesla, Harley Davidson, OJ, and wines and spirits. The Americans are importing Canadian products to which they add value. If Donnie wants to drive up the cost of inputs, so be it. He can explain to Americans why gas is up a dollar a gallon and everything costs more. Maybe in the process, he'll be able to wrap his head around how tariffs, trade, and the economy work.

Canada needs to diversofy as soon as possible, as much as possible from her trade with the US.
America is capricious and unstable and seemingly in decline.
Canada sells important resources fo the US at bargain prices thus subsidizing her neighbour, yet it is turned around and somehow Canada "takes" from the US.
Apparently, the Americans don't need Canadian resources.

  • @kurio999
    @kurio999 16 дней назад +13

There seems to be a general consensus that the USA has the better hand in such trade negotiations. I disagree.
The majority of US purchases are in raw materials (bitumen, nickel, potash, uranium) which they do not have in the same abundance. They take these inputs and add value for resale. Tariffs on such goods would directly harm their own industries. So let the USA shoot themselves in the foot.
Alternatively, the USA could go after Canada's manufactured goods, but then Canada could hit the USA with counter tariffs on finished goods. Canada's advantage is that there is a whole world, including China, that would happily replace the American suppliers for the same price or less. Sure, Canada may lose manufacturing goods in the process, but the USA could lose proportionally more.

She doesn't articulate the trade relationship between the US and Canada accurately. Canada's only "advantage" is that we sell raw resources to the US to process, refine and resell. Thats not really a disadvantage to the US, because they make way more money selling the refined products elsewhere. The main export by far the Canada sells the US is oil, and that oil gets refined and sold by the US for more profit margin

I got sick of BC almost three decades ago. Beautiful no doubt but when you have no time to enjoy the outdoors because you're working three jobs to have any money then the geography is irrelevant. Tax tax tax . I moved to Latin America and the tax rate was 10% , all taxes built into prices. You can street eat delicious food and a tip is a surprise , gratefully accepted not like Canada where they guilt you into paying 20% tip for barely acceptable service. I was in California for a couple months last year and I honestly dont know how people afford the groceries , the prices are insane. Ironicly the only thing cheap in Cali is weed. I think thats how they keep the people from rioting.

Alberta should put a surcharge on exported oil and gas, to the same extent of tariffs. 25% sounds good. discounted oil and gas go to stable and volume buyers, and our largest trading partner is becoming unstable, and not reliable. time for Canada to get its oil and gas to tide water, and a pipeline through Canada to eastern Canada. our trading partner has become unreliable and unstable.

Your guest is complaisant with the notion of trade deficit. It cannot be acknowledged in absolute numbers without taking into consideration the population size of each partners. On a per capita basis when including services each Canadian purchase 11K$ yearly of US goods and services while each American purchases 1,4K$ from Canada. Now do the same math between China and the US. This trade deficit calculation is non sense.

Considering the US is the number one superpower on the globe, if the US is determined to take Canada, it appears that Canada has to surrender at the end, except Canada search for help from Russia or China, and but that will not happen considering Canada has long been an ally of the US; and there are so many similarities between these two countries. In the short term, what Canada can do is to explore market from other countries particularly from China. Basically China can absorb almost all the raw material that is currently exported to the United States.

We do not have to give in to the U.S.
Stop acting like it's a forgone conclusion.
First of all, Trump's negotiating style is to start with outrageous demands and fhen settle for something more realistic later.
Secondly, using economic or military force will cause an international backlash. Remember, Canada is a member of the G7 and NATO. Forcing Canada into a merger allows China to claim that they can take territory and push back against the U.S.
Thirdly, there will be resistance inside the U.S. Not all Americans are interested in makkng Canada a part of the U.S.
Lsstly, over 80% of Canadians do not want to merge. There will be resistance.
