I'm in my 60s and remember what my Maternal Grandfather who would tell me, "Use your brain and you'll save your back." The Kabota sidekick or something similar is a great investment. When you get older, the idea of hiring help with housework isn't a bad idea. We have several friends who have someone come in once a week to dust and clean floors.

Years ago when my husband was alive a bunch of us friends would get together on the weekends in the fall and have a splitting bee. If the wood needed to be cut, two guy would take their saws and cut it to the desired length. Then it was on to the splitter. One would run the splitter two would load it and then toss it. And we would rotate jobs. And then three others would pile it to dry. This was a yearly event. We did all of the parents first then all of ours. It might take a couple of weekend to complete but we had fun doing it. You ask what was the price? A good hot meal at noon time and the feeling that you had accomplished something for someone who appreciated it. We always had fun. I miss those time now. Good job, good food and good friends.

I don't know anyone up here in WI that puts their firewood up next to their wood shake or log walls because of the bugs that are in the firewood... they migrate into your walls and you will have a hell of a time getting them out and preventing damage.

You all have a lot going on in your life and your time management skills and knowing when to hire something out is good training for us to learn.
When a family member who farms told me that he hired out some of his spraying weeds and cutting hay, I was shocked. But, then he went on to say, he doesn't have the proper equipment for spraying weeds and doesn't want to handle the chemicals. On cutting hay, he told me he just couldn't get it all done before the rain was coming. One person farming about 1,000 acres. At age 65 he is no spring chicken and has to pace himself. He usually hires someone to help him cut wheat in the summer also.
You have to juggle things in your life and if you are worn down, that does no one any good. I think it is a smart move on your wife's part to get some assistance when needed.

Pick the tree up from the bottom and walk backwards for it to fall-
I couldn’t tell if this was happening, but if your chain touches rock, dirt, leaves, debris- it makes your chain dull within seconds- I learned all this while working w/ the arborist when mulching our 10 acres of cedar... while my husband was at work flying, I was learning how to sharpen a chainsaw and do forestry with really smart Mexican immigrants. They were trying to teach me to work smart / not hard like your dad
I really enjoy your videos... thank you for sharing in your homestead life- I laughed out loud when hearing the names of your cows

I live in a split-level with a finished basement in Minnesota, we primarily use wood, with a fuel oil backup furnace. I'm proud to say that we used absolutely no fuel oil this year but on the other hand we used 12 chords of split Oak and 800lbs of anthracite coal. And it's still getting below freezing at night. There is no way I could cut enough wood off of my own property to heat the house I have to have it hauled in. But even after all of that I heat it all winter for just about $2,000.

Back woods tip: Turn the head of your maul roughly 10 degrees when splitting wood. The blade will still sink into the log, but back side of the mall will want to fall over to the side you tilted it. This pries the wood apart, we call it busting wood not splitting wood. Additionally it keeps you from sticking your maul as much. This technique is a little harder to master and it is tough on your wrist, but the first time you "bust" a big log you will be hooked.

Appreciate the message, we all have to be reminded of these simple logistics. (well I do) I have not enough time to complete a task today but I realize I can do quite a bit of it and finish on another day, instead of putting it off until I can do it all at once. (some tasks do require that but not most). Thanks for the reminder. Later, I got to get started so that I can finish, even if it isn't today.

Danial, these winds we been getting has been blowing down trees here. So bring that chain saw on over. I have a huge Cedar tree in the drive way that needs to be cut up.
So wish I had a wood chipper.
    I need mulch lol.
Maybe I should just rent one.
Glad you got that chore done and didn't get hurt.
You guys make me nervous cutting down trees alone.
It's dangerous even if you've done it a millon times.
A friend of ours died cutting down a tree alone. It fell on him.
And he did logging for a living for yrs.
So even if you know what you are doing it can happen.
Big hugs. Stay safe at work also.

Where I live in northern Alberta we have trembling aspen as our main wood source, also spruce, pine and a little birch. The problem with the aspen is if they die standing they are usually punky or rotten with in a year so it is way better to cut it green and season it. I wish we had the tree variety you have in the States.

Perfect video. I agree.. just do what you can. It is amazing what gets done. I chipped away bringing in small loads of firewood like that after work as I could this past winter and early spring. After a month or so of that, I had a stack of wood that took my family 3 hours to split and stack with a gas powered log splitter. It adds up quick. just like anything in life... success is additive, it doesn't come overnight.

Just viewed a video where a farm in Maine, Ten Apple Farm, is offering 2 mile monthly hikes with their dairy goats in the winter to relieve the goats boredom. They have staff members walk with them and tell them about the goats, they teach the visitors about caring for and raising goats. Just thinking this might be something you might be interested in doing to boost your sales. I realize your goats aren't dairy goats, but you might interest people wanting to start their own herd and maybe do it once or twice a year, not monthly, because your schedule leaves little time for extra chores. Just a suggestion.

Not only does hiring a cleaning person make life better for your family, but I'm pretty sure it helps the cleaner's life better as well. And it o to fers them a better opportunity to work for themselves. It's called perpetuating the American Dream...
