  • The Davidson Inventors Challenge is an annual UK-wide STEM innovation competition hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering (University of Cambridge) in collaboration with The Association of Science, Technology & Innovation (ASTI) in Malaysia and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). Participating Y11 and Y12 student teams are set the talk to select and research a problem related to sustainability and healthcare, and come up with an innovative solution to tackle a given challenge with an aim to advance sustainable development goals (SDGs). The student teams have been working since January, submitting first a project outline, and then a final project report. During the process they have put into practice and developed key chemical engineering skills i.e. problem solving, critical thinkingm experimentation and data gathering, innovation, commercial awareness, etc...
Four finalist teams (out of 103 team submissions originally received) were selected this year to present their projects at the online Final on 23 June 2023 to an audience comprised of the department, the organising team and mentors, other students, and a wider audience of graduates working in industry. The event also featured brief talk contributions from Nigel Hirst, the current President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and department alumni Peter Davidson and Deborah Grubbe.
