    I'm an old guy and have a vivid memory of being in Modesto, CA in the summer of 1964-or 65, visiting with my older sister and her family. Her husband was going to school at the local university and if my memory serves me correctly, Gene Winfield had a shop across a street from the college. He somehow arranged a visit to Gene's shop for me. As I recall, there was a 49 Mercury in the display window and we went in for a few minutes and went "ooh" and "ahh". We weren't there for more than 10 minutes but it's stayed with me all these many years.

    I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Winfield at one of the car shows in the early '80's, at the debut of the freshly restored "Jade Idol". He was kind enough to let me sit in the car and was very generous with his time. A great fellow, and a great car. My best to you, sir.

    Living Legend is the understatement of the last 94 years, or at least since he built his first kustom car. Barris, Edelbrock, Iskandarian and a few others on that list as well.
    A pioneer of a hobby that many wanted to stop/shut down/OUTLAW at it's beginning, became an industry and the nucleus of the largest group (I believe) of small businesses/industries in the United States.

    I’m 41 and have met Gene several times over the years, it’s weird, he looks like he’s a little slower than he used to be but otherwise I swear this man hasn’t aged in the 25 years we’ve crossed paths. I’m happy to see he’s still doing what he loves. Everyone else is so anxious to retire and guys like him and Bill Hines and Barris have been retired since their 20’s in my eyes, just doing what they love. ❤️

    • @ToyKingWonder
      @ToyKingWonder 2 года назад +2

      You are right. How many people retire, and soon after have health problems or die? What was all that work for? This guy just cruises along. I lost a beloved uncle a few years ago. He was 94 and still looked after his house, and had built a patio with flagstone. He was fully conversant in technology, politics, etc. He looked like he was in his 70s. One day, he didn't feel good, and was not getting better. No energy. He went to the hospital after he blacked out and then came around. They told him he was having heart issues. One week in the hospital and he passed. He was happy all the way to the end. I think for a long life, you must keep doing what you love doing, and that does not mean watching TV and sleeping all day. Your body was made to move and work. I think that is why Gene is able to do what he does.
