I'm trying to learn this piece on my organ. Mr. Merulo was a genius.

Ha ha!... The first time Ilistened some Boulez music, it was the same (and also the second time...).
Maybe you don't often listen Renaissance and Early Baroque Harpsichord music. The first time I heard some Louis Couperin, Byrd and Frescobaldi harpsichord music, it was also hard to find musicality in it. I think it's due to ornamentation and counterpoint which both make the melodies very dificult to hear. The only solution is to listen carefully this music many times until you are able to both to distinguish the melody and the different voices of counterpoint. But only if you want it. If you are not so much interested in this composer or this repertoire, there are not any obligation.
