The Keladi Nayakas (Ikkeri Nayakas) ruled most parts of south Canara from the year 1540 till 1763. In the year 1762 Chitradurga Cheif (Madakeri Nayaka - V) (Army - 6000 of his best cavalry and some kallars) and Hyder Ali (Army - 10,000 horses and more than 20,000 foot) (Dhanu) marched towards Keladi and captured the Queen Virammajji. Queen Virammajji was the last ruler of keladi and was taken to prison by the Chitradurga Nayakas and Tippu Sulthan in Maddagiri and released by the Marathas she died on her way back to Poona in the year 1763. Mariamma is also known as Yellamma. The goddess was taken along with the army of Chitradurga Nayakas towards South Canara to defeat the Keladi Nayakas as mentioned above. The family deity of Keladi Nayakas was Kollur Mukambika. The family deity of Chitradurga Nayakas was Ucchangi Devi. The sisters of Ucchangi Devi are Matangi (worshipped by the people of Madigas) and Maharani (worshipped by the people of Chalavadi). The Renuka Devi (Mother of Parashurama) was also known as Ucchangi.
