The ‘premium’ glamour routes (London New York etc) will attract the new planes to compete with the competitors who also use their best aircraft on the similar glamour runs. However, I found that when looked up the planes where they had been before taking me to Ghana, the plane had been to places like New York, Phoenix and Miami so I think the main reason for those planes is to match capacity with the route. Flights are once or twice a day. 747-400 was the largest plane they could use. (There has also been the larger A380 since 2012 but not that many airports can accommodate it) The 747-400 entered BAs fleet in 1990 so they were quite dated (but still perfectly safe) by the time they retired. Now it is mostly B777 (getting on a bit too) and more modern B787s and A350s. I noticed that on European routes some of the Airbuses they use are 20+ years old. Also I think with the 777 and 787 we get maybe 20 or 30 less seats per flight than the old 747-400 so this could create a slight shortage on busy periods like Xmas when tickets are already very expensive.

@water Omi production: I agree with everything you said apart from point 2 . No one (i.e eu or us) is entrapping Africa. Africans are the problem of Africa. Your points may be factually accurate, but none of them are the direct cause of aircraft type used. It’s all down to commercial decisions by each individual airline (assuming they have newer aircraft to use as not all do)
British Airways is like that. British Airways plane to America can't be compared to the one they bring for us in Nigeria. I used to fly BA to naija but since I flew BA to New York I stopped using BA to naija and swap to Virgin Atlantic.
@@SassyFunke Our government obviously does not realise am sure if they do they will complain to the BA. KLM and Virgin Atlantic are the only 2 airlines that operates in Nigeria with a standard aircraft.
If you go on flight radar, you will discover they BA uses this aircraft to America too. But they use Dreamliners B787-8,9 or 10 to America too, but they are smaller than B777-300
I have to disagree. I'm actually cabin crew for British Airways and know for a fact that the plane that flies to Abuja more often than not has come in from Jfk or somewhere else around the world earlier that day. The Accra route is often flown on one of the newest A350 aircraft aswell. it's just unfortunate that maybe flight you have taken plane might have appeared old or worn out.
Spot on Sassy. The difference between the British Airways aircraft that I took recently on a trip to Nigeria and the Virgin Atlantic aircraft that I used to fly out was remarkable. The latter was newer, bigger and cabin crew friendlier.
I love this video!! It can be frustrating getting an older plane, but these aircraft also fly to the USA. British Airways are in the process of refurbishing all aircraft to be more modern planes and hopefully once done these will fly on African routes.
@@femtey4452 Funny this topic makes NO mention of the fact BA fly A350's and A380's to Africa - the best and newest aircraft in the fleet. You only have to look at the published schedule.

I can't speak for the rest of Africa, but what I do know is that BA prioritizes First Class when it comes to the Nigerian route. Their options to Nigeria are really the Boeing 777, Boeing 787 and Airbus A350. I'm not sure whether the current Lagos airport can accommodate the A380. The A350 which is nice and new has no First Class, so not an option for Nigeria. The 787 has only 8 seats, while the 777 has 14 seats. First Class and Business Class sales is critical to airlines like BA. I think this is what is going on. From a profitability standpoint, it makes sense to fly the 777 to Nigeria.
Sassy, this plane isn’t old, even though they got delivery of newer ones of this range with First and Club Suite. it’s a Boeing triple seven dash three hundred ER (B777-300). This plane goes to New York, Boston, Cape Town, used for Singapore-Sydney pre-Covid, and now Lagos after scraping B747. If it was a B777-200, used to Nairobi, that I would agree with you. But this one, is a machine Funke. Lovely video though.
Was comparing it to my subsequent flight from London to Los Angeles but overall airlines have a habit of sending their better aircrafts elsewhere. Thank you for watching. You’re appreciated
@@SassyFunke Yes they send better aircraft to airport with suitable facilities. Do you know that Airbus A380 cannot land or depart from our runway in Lagos? Also, BA uses new modern newly acquired (about two years ago) Boeing 777-300 to Lagos not 'an old looking plane'.
@@ay1ism What they don't realise is that these planes don't just travel to Africa. Those Boeing 777-300 that they sent to Nigeria they send it to other places too. I think Africans have some complex that we are the worse in everything LoL And yeah definitely they would never bring the A380 to Nigeria. It can't land ther
There is a huge construction blunder whereby the gate parking area for the new terminal is too small for wide body planes to park safely. BA does this to all flights to African destinations. The best is to avoid them and only use them when you don’t have a choice. We are probably paying more per mile/ kilometer.
The older aircraft are better! They have more room than the more modern versions. Thank you for your great videos. I hope you will come to India one day
Great video. Thanks. We get the worst because we let them. If we complain and boycott they'll sit up. My best flights have been with Emirates are they still good?
Hi there, you don't always get the older planes :) Brand new A350-1000s are sent to and from Accra as well as Airbus A380s to Johannesburg. Also, if you look at New York as a route 20 year old 777-200s are sent there - which trust me are not that great. As BA modernises their fleet I should hope that those older aircraft will be upgraded potentially to more A350s or 787s. It is all to do with the capacity of the aircraft so some routes need newer planes to meet the demand as not as many people fly to and from Africa. Also, BA generally has an older fleet for long haul which like I mentioned is slowly being either refurbished or replaced.
Awesome trip report Funke! 👏🏽 On the issue of old planes, there are a lot of reason and to me it’s more of a “I really don’t care what you think” and “you probably can’t do anything about it” attitude. But truly we can do something about it. I can remember back in 2019 when Turkish Airlines decided to move mad when they wear mixing aircraft type for the IST-ABV-IST route thereby leaving passengers luggages behind in Istanbul when they use the narrow body B737 instead of the wide body A330 and the minister of aviation suspended them and they came correct immediately. And so many other examples where we’ve shown you can’t treat the Nigerian paying customers anyhow. And to think that BA is the worst international airline flying to Nigeria yet very expensive. That’s why I will choose their counterpart Virgin Atlantic over them when the time comes. I was so happy last year when I saw through Flightradar24 that they now use their new A350-1000s to Lagos. Please if you can, do a flight review/trip report of Virgin Atlantic.
@Clinton Bishop: They are not expensive more than Virgin sometimes, Virgin is even slightly more expensive. Also, BA flies brand new, new modern long aircraft (boieng 777-300) to Lagos. I took it last year . They type of aircraft they use from London to US is different hence the cabin differences.
Hello Funke for all informations and videos give about travelling to Nigeria please I need to know if you have applied for the QR code permit and unfortunately you can't travel then and had to change your date and flight do you have to reapply all over again thxs
Thank you for the informative video, I was also not aware of the attestation required before now. Please did you need a transit visa for your layover in London?
Lovely video sassy funke, I hate pretzels too, my only grouse with airlines using old planes on the Lagos route is the extra ordinary high fare , Nigerian passengers deserve better services.
I fly regularly from Accra to London, usually in WTP or business. Over the last 3 years we have had a mix of planes. We had the 747s, then we had the 777s, then the A350, now back to 777. So whilst I don't disagree that sometimes African destinations get older planes I do think this is simply a commercial decision - often based on the quality of the offering from competing airlines. The A350 was brillliant and, while the return of the 777 is a 'downgrade' it does include a first class cabin, which was not the case before. It looks like we're stuck with the old 777s for the summer though, and the hope they will bring back the A350s in October.
You also get the worst gate areas ..dirty worn out and no amenities. When I flew Lufthansa Airlines from Houston to Abuja. The arrival gate in Germany was fabulous... new, large clean window ..light and airy clean with shopping, restrooms, charging stations, restaurants... After a long hike and bus arrived at the departure gate... I was instantly insulted.. it was dark, no restaurants the furnishing was worn out and looked like they got them from a used store. There was one small restroom with 3 stalls ... no place to charge electronics. ,,, very small windows and we where pack in like sardines.
KLM is by far the best airline serving the African continent, and Schipol Airport Amsterdam offers the most enjoyable experience for passengers going anywhere in the world. British Airways and its associated airports, while not particularly objectionable, do not compare to KLM and Amsterdam Schipol in any category, while Lufthansa offers by far the WORST and most harrowing airline travel experience in comparison to all carriers currently in operation between Europe and Africa. If you enjoy being humiliated by extremely rude security officers, sitting in departure lounges heated to make you sweat like a sauna client, and walking miles between gates in the uncharted wilderness of Frankfurt Airport, then Lufthansa and Frankfurt Airport will provide you with the jailhouse ordeal that you seek. Personally, I would never consider flying Lufthansa even if the ticket prices dropped to one dollar per flight. At the absolute pinnacle of any customer satisfaction rating summary on could care to mention, KLM staff clearly regard people the world over as being worthy of consistently courteous and efficient airport and air travel services, which is a philosophy that is epitomized with eloquence by KLM, Royal Dutch Airlines, and Amsterdam Schipol Airport.
Royal Dutch, KLM my first flight experience 17 years ago and still the best till today. I can't wait to fly them again to America, not Nigeria, because their recent aircraft to Lagos is not appealing to me. It's not like their older 3 engine plane they used to fly to Lagos. Their airport is phenomenal, extremely beautiful. BA aircraft to Lagos is Longer and it's among the new boieng 777-300 BA acquired two years ago.
@@ay1ism Older aircraft that are meticulously maintained and checked are just as reliable as new ones, and one can rest assured that KLM's maintenance regimes are among the most stringent of any airline.
Great review - and the difference in planes is not just to Africa but also to South Asia. When we fly from the US to South Asia there is definitely a difference in the quality of planes from the US to the hub vs from the hub to South Asia; hub to South Asia quality of planes is definitely lower!
@@SassyFunke thank you. Do you think they will move international flights there soon. Since you said it has more accommodating areas. Asking because of the bottlenecks at the immigrations for easy flow that is!
The 777s that BA run are not good at all. The seats have not been updated in a very long time and some even have seats that look like they are from the 2000s. The newer planes that British Airways own though are much more modern. Weirdly enough I found that the 777s are mainly used for American routes. eg. London - John F Kennedy Gatwick - Punta Cana The newer planes are either sent to large tourist spots or destinations like Japan or Singapore. The likely reason for this is competition. Airlines in the east (specifically the middle east and towards Japan) are known to be better. BA sends their worst planes to places with little or no competition. Their most modern compete with the best, and are there to attract customers to choose them. That is the most likely explanation.
Was this a 777-300ER? If so these are aircraft used to most long haul flight including to the US. The 777-300ER is pretty modern. The only 2 aircraft more modern that would be able to do that route would be the Boeing 787 Dreamliner or an A350. But I guess this was your experience and I respect that. I enjoy your vlogs. ;)

Here is a Spanner in the works. BA flies the newest A350 to Accra - You don't get newer than that. At the same time until a couple of months ago, BA was flying a very old (over 20 year old) 777-200 to Phoenix and a very ancient old 747-400 before it got retired. The Last time that 772 aircraft was in Accra was in 2012 or so. I am pretty sure BA sends the 777-300 to Lagos, believe me I would rather sit in that aircraft, any day than BA's A350's or 787's. And no I do not work for BA. I agree with @Jonas Lundberg statement. You have to look at the seat configurations, ie the ratio of Business to Premium to Economy and fly the appropriate equipment. Ask Virgin Atlantic why they failed miserably in Ghana. Seat configs.
The boeing 777-300ER isn't OLD. May not be as modern as the 787 or a350 but not OLD. And the reason most EUROPEAN airlines send older aircraft here is because they're not as fuel efficient and the route is shorter than transatlantic routes, so it makes more sense to use an aircraft with lower fuel efficiency on a shorter route than on a longer route. It's all about profit margins, NOT lack of respect or any funny thing like that.
Your right they always send the old planes to Africa, perhaps because Africans don't complain. Nigerian are regular travellers so I am surprise they are not writing complaint emails to BA' s customer service. As for the screens in Premium economy, Funke, it is a economy seat with certain perks, like larger seats, more leg room, different amenity kits and china plates. Bigger screen are in Business class. However, I am with you on the old planes.
I love in using dual citizenship when traveling to Nigeria. I refused having Nigeria custom officials having their stamps on my American passport in order to avoid the painful harassment over being subjected to over staying or something else. Thanks for your nice touring experience adventure. 👍🏾

@Solaed2 your grammar makes it a little hard to comprehend, but I was only asking conceptually. The immigration officer does what they like with your passport, as a traveller you have very little say on what they do.
The title is rather misleading. Accra was one of BA's longest-standing A350-1000 destinations, one of BA's newest aircraft types with their brand new Club World suite installed onboard. Almost all BA routes receive the Boeing 777 at some point, it is simply the backbone of their fleet and the 50+ that they have, have to fly somewhere. Boeing 747s were used pre-covid due to high demand on the route and hence the need for increased capacity, likewise for Lagos. It makes little financial sense for BA to send 787s to Ghana or Nigeria as they are simply too small. This is why Virgin Atlantic doesn't send 787s to Lagos either, or at least normally doesn't. Johannesburg is also served with Boeing 787s and Airbus A350s, BA's two newest aircraft types. Air France, a carrier that flies to most African capitals, operates their newest aircraft type, the Airbus A350, to several of these cities. If anything, the reality is closer to the opposite of what this video title and caption suggest. I think the problem you find is with British Airways as an airline, more than the aircraft types that they "operate to Africa", which are no different to all of their other destinations.
This is a question with too many answers. This is why I've decided to fly premium on any flight to Nigeria because the stress is too much!! Plus we Nigerians never respect ourselves - even on the plane!!!!
Very nice of you to take all the effort to video this trip. British Airways flies old aircraft to Nigeria especially because we don't complain and very expensive from uk.
The issue with this particular flight is that both planes were the same but the one to the US had its premium cabin completely refurbished. But in general, there is a clear downgrade when it comes to flights that land in africa.
@@SassyFunke don't be crazy my dear. Refurbishment doesn't happen overnight, it's one aircraft out after that another. Meanwhile generally BA cabins are outdated, even Brits know that, buh luckily they started a refurbishment program last year to refurbish all airplanes in their fleet.

Maybe very soon they will remove the salad from their menu. I'm not flying with BA anytime soon. It's Air France or Emirates for me.

British Airways is like that. British Airways plane to America can't be compared to the one they bring for us in Nigeria. I used to fly BA to naija but since I flew BA to New York I stopped using BA to naija and swap to Virgin Atlantic.
This was the feeling I had when I flew that subsequent flight to LA from London. I couldn’t believe my eyes 👀 🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️
They are literally the same planes serving Nigeria and USA. They are right now updating the cabins so some feel new and others feel older.
As a tui 787 pilot I wonder why BA doesn’t send their 787s to Lagos as I’ve flown it many times
I think they need some bashing on Twitter, then they might do something about it.
😂😂😂
Spot on Sassy. The difference between the British Airways aircraft that I took recently on a trip to Nigeria and the Virgin Atlantic aircraft that I used to fly out was remarkable. The latter was newer, bigger and cabin crew friendlier.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I love this video!! It can be frustrating getting an older plane, but these aircraft also fly to the USA. British Airways are in the process of refurbishing all aircraft to be more modern planes and hopefully once done these will fly on African routes.
You will find these 'old banger' 777's on most long haul routes with BA. It has nothing to do with with the actual route other than capacity.
@Maxthelab......exactly.

I fly Qatar and Ethiopian Air and love it. New planes great experience every time.
I literally just checked and the same 777 that is taken to Lagos.... Flies to Dallas and Philadelphia. I think Africans have some complex that we are the worse in everything LoL
And yeah definitely they would never bring the A380 to Nigeria. It can't land ther
Lagos to London route as at typing this is done by a B777-200
There is a huge construction blunder whereby the gate parking area for the new terminal is too small for wide body planes to park safely. All the international airlines refused to move to the new terminal until proper parking area is sorted. The aviation authorities are currently demolishing the adjoining buildings to create more space.
Indeed you’re right. They are currently fixing this. But why would such a blunder occur to begin with? 😩

Virgin Atlantic use their brand new A350-1000s from Lagos and Johannesburg to London though.........
Great video. Thanks. We get the worst because we let them. If we complain and boycott they'll sit up. My best flights have been with Emirates are they still good?
Well said 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I flew with Emirates 2 years back and they certainly were nothing to write home about. They were just OK nothing special at all
BA charge extortionate fares, per mile, to Nigeria! How can London to LA, which takes about 10hrs be cheaper than the 6hrs London to Lagos??!!
Well said. I am sure they will say taxes are higher for Nigeria bound flights
On the issue of old planes, there are a lot of reason and to me it’s more of a “I really don’t care what you think” and “you probably can’t do anything about it” attitude.
Thank you for this in-depth feedback. I’ll certainly do a review if I fly Virgin soon
It takes a while for new seats and cabin interiors to be rolled out across a fleet as large as BA.

Ah yes! Sorry will update now
Lovely video sassy funke, I hate pretzels too, my only grouse with airlines using old planes on the Lagos route is the extra ordinary high fare , Nigerian passengers deserve better services.
Indeed if it the flights were cheaper, than fair enough. Thanks for watching
Wow 💔💔💔 That’s sad.
Hey I have a question
Did you do a covid test before your were able to travel, and another one when you landed in London
I thought the new terminal was commissioned in March!!! So it's not yet opened to passengers!!!
Air Peace is the only airline I am aware is currently flying from there

Totally agree with you. I tried Lufthansa about a few weeks ago to Lagos, my worst travel experience in most recent time.

Great review - and the difference in planes is not just to Africa but also to South Asia. When we fly from the US to South Asia there is definitely a difference in the quality of planes from the US to the hub vs from the hub to South Asia; hub to South Asia quality of planes is definitely lower!
Hello.have they started using the new terminal?
Yes. Air Peace currently operates from the new terminal
Weirdly enough I found that the 777s are mainly used for American routes.
eg.
London - John F Kennedy
Gatwick - Punta Cana
The newer planes are either sent to large tourist spots or destinations like Japan or Singapore.
I enjoy your vlogs. ;)
Both aircrafts were the same but they refitted the premium cabin going to the US. Thanks for watching :)

@@SassyFunke any idea what the timeline is on this?? I was so disappointed at the state of the airport when I visited last Dec 2021. It looked worse than when I last saw it in 2018.
I once flew with American united airline to Switzerland, then switched to Swiss Air to Kenya. United airline was like ancient compared with Swiss Air.
To be fair, Lagos is now a Boeing 787-10
The boeing 777-300ER isn't OLD. May not be as modern as the 787 or a350 but not OLD. And the reason most EUROPEAN airlines send older aircraft here is because they're not as fuel efficient and the route is shorter than transatlantic routes, so it makes more sense to use an aircraft with lower fuel efficiency on a shorter route than on a longer route. It's all about profit margins, NOT lack of respect or any funny thing like that.
Thier 787 to lagos was just 🥹🥹🥹🥹

BA fly all their old aircraft on their bucket and spade flights to the Caribbean, Vegas, Florida and to the Indian Ocean. It's not just to Africa.

For real the ones that come to Abuja is as dirty as hell. British Airways has a good number of a350s and 787s why can they release one of them to be flying on London to Lagos and Abuja routes. They fly their a350s alot to Accra. It's not fair at all. Another thing I noticed is that there's is a reduction in the food items that used to be on the tray. Normally you get the main course then bread roll with yogurt or Mousse, salad as well as jam, butter etc. Now all I see whenever I fly with them is just the main course with salad and bottle water a drink of your choice and that's it. Maybe very soon they will remove the salad from their menu. I'm not flying with BA anytime soon. It's Air France or Emirates for me.
