And you wanna know the funny thing? Jason the slasher ended up not even playing into the lawsuit. The IP rights to the original movie were rewarded to the writer, but Jason's mother was the villain of that one, Jason wasn't even present except as a corpse, so the slasher version of him stayed in the same copyright position as it was beforehand.

It's like the majority of games that come out, they dont aim to be a thing that lasts 10 years they serve to come out and just be fun and when you have your fill cool you can move on, maybe come back a while later with your friends to revisit it. It's not a bad thing, people just have frankly stupid expectations these days. It's perfectly okay for a game to do a thing and not intend to be a live service or be updated or try to be esports or something. A game can just be fun and that's it.

I highly doubt this game would push past even 10 million dollars of budget and that's on the super high end I'd expect it to be much lower. Friday the 13th had probably 2 or 3 million total? This game would cost more and id imagine this is more towards 5-7 million. Which you don't need to sell a shit ton to make back. To be fair, I think the reason Friday the 13th was neglected is because of the license issues it had. The devs couldn't deliver enough content and updates because they weren't allowed to (at least that's what I heard). And I liked F13 a lot.
But apparently in this game the devs will have more freedom because Sissy and Johnny (2 upcoming killers) are actually not movie based characters, they're new. They're probably allowed to create new stuff to some extent. If TCSM gets more love and attention than F13 did, I could see this as a pretty solid asym horror game competitor. Demon on Evil Dead is incredibly boring and I honestly just don't see how people can play it.
Especially the early game where you're just floating around collecting energy and all the units you use get their asses kicked.
I also think that game has a horrible progression system, in that you both level up outside of and inside of matches, and sometimes the power level between a new player and a veteran player is so vast that it just doesn't feel very fun to play.
When I'm playing killer in DBD, I can make some satisfying plays, each hit feels like I did damage.
In Evil Dead, the combat feels clunky, and again the level differences and characters can actually make your incredibly powerful ancient undead demons feel like they have pool noodles for arms.
A couple of my friends really love Evil Dead, and one of them insists it's so much better than DBD, but personally I just think DBD has far better gameplay than Evil Dead.

Asym-Slashers is a broad genre. The only game that competes with DBD is VHS - Last Year only competes with Evil Dead - Friday the 13th only competes with Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
There's not enough overlap. It's true some of the games may or may not be 3rd person or 1st person, and have players doing similar styled tasks - but gameplay and overall scope is different.
It's like you can compare Call of Duty to Battlefield, because they're very similar. But you can't compare Call of Duty to Counterstrike, because they're VERY different.
*The reality though* - The more asym-slashers we get, the more glaring DBD's problem will become. The introduction of more variety WON'T KILL DBD - but more people are going to begin to realize how flawed DBD is, and perhaps start turning their attention more towards games that fill the gaps that DBD can't.
DBD needs broadening out. *New modes-- New mechanics-- New service-- New trajectory--* Without those, the game *will die,* because who can honestly stay interested in a game when there's only one objective with one set of tasks you have to do in order to win? Even Among Us got a new mode.
There's no excuse why a game going into it's 8th year isn't even getting a *secondary* mode. It's times like this when you CAN compare this game to other asym-slashers. Because it's a basic requirement. Every multiplayer game should have it to some degree.

I cringe whenever I hear "DBD killer" phrase. As if this game aims to do that... It will have it's own dedicated fan base and the game with the help of progression systems, cosmetics and unlockables will thrive for a long time. "License is too limited to have that longevity". Hard disagree, you don't need a million of licenses to keep your game afloat like DBD does, all it takes is a creative game design and balancing to keep the game fresh no matter how many months have gone by.

There’s only so much you can do with an evil dead liscence. Combat wise it’s superior to both but dbd has its longevity simply because of all its licenses. Until another game comes out that can acquire that many licenses like dbd then there’s just no competition.

But when a multiplayer game comes out everyone loses their shit if its not something that will become the next Fortnite or Dead by Daylight. Stuff like Among Us & Fall Guys are a blast for me to play with friends on a random night once every few months and its perfectly fine that I'm not playing those daily. Even if this game doesn't have staying power it still looks to be something that I'd play non stop for a month or so at release with friends and then we might dust off the game during a lull in new games coming out.

I think there is a way to make it last quite a bit longer, which is if they adapt the licenses for the sequels to add maps and characters, and then if they're really ambitious, to adapt the licenses for Rob Zombie's 'House of 1000 Corpses', 'Devil's Rejects', and '3 from Hell' for the same purpose. From there they could move through the more gore-hound-esque horror properties like Eli Roth's 'Green Inferno' and 'Haunt'. I definitely think there are ways to make this a serious competitor on the asymmetrical pvp market, now whether or not the devs WANT to do that, or they would rather move on to a new property is entirely up to them.

Which is fine, nothing wrong with a game coming out, having it's time, and then fading off because that's how most games go and isn't a bad thing. It's definitely a good game to cooldown from DBD burnout. It's fun more engaging and there's many ways to play a match. In terms of DLC, my guess would be include different variations of Bubbas based on movies --currently is based on 1st one. I'm not sure if it could happen but if they are able to make other franchises crossovers i.e., Saw. That could definitely extend the game's life span. Also, the game is aiming for very deep builds and perks based on progression. While is good at the same time could make game balancing a nightmare. When you have a Victim like Connie that her base kit can cheese and almost ignore unlocking mechanics, just imagine with perks/skill trees. Ana has a base kit dead hard and she can tank TONS of damage, and so on...

Your assessment of duration of games is spot-on, and something I feel has been far too warped by a few live-service games for younger generations. I think back to the heyday of CoD and those games would have one year of being the newest title, and then a year or so after where people still played them, then they fell off in terms of players and no one threw a fit that the game wasn't designed to bleed them of their money forever through microtransactions. I think it is far better and more virtuous to get a game into a stable state and then let it remain there without trying to turn everything into a "death by one thousand cuts" type of microtransaction/battlepass hell that so many multiplayer games want to become. I miss the days of just releasing a complete game and letting it be, with DLCs as a nice addition but not an expected model to try to frankenstein a game into a state of painful undeath.

They literally were getting ready to release all sorts of content and were working on a new game mode... When all of the sudden bam they had to stop all of that and the only things they could do were minor minor game adjustments... They couldn't even really change barely anything they had already released...
Friday in my opinion gameplay-wise is simply the better game(Dbd obviously had the stronger market position...) The issue became that the Lawsuit over rights dragged on for so long that they had no way to do new things with the game because they weren't allowed to...
The funny part is that the lawsuit didn't even have anything to do with the game itself it was literally just a slap fight over who owned the rights to the first movie and who owned Jason and all that... I think Friday would still be alive today if it hadn't been for the Lawsuit... It probably wouldn't be as popular as it was but it wouldn't be undead like it is...

Sounds like bubba and cook are meant to stick together most of the time, while hitch is supposed to go hunting one person. Hitch can overwhelm people given enough time, and force them back into the house where there’s more places to lose the killer. Meanwhile, cook can lead bubba to someone, force them into a corner together because they can cut off loops and do bonus damage together. Plus, even with cook’s limited stamina and damage, he can track people even in the basement with his abilities. That leaves 2 people doing whatever, which hitch can interrupt relatively easily.

People should really stop looking to Gun Media (the devs) for a 'DBD killer'. Gun has come out and repeatedly said they just want to make games that make the franchises new and fun again, because they're fans of those franchises. I wouldn't be surprised if a Halloween game is next on the docket once TCM has run its course. They'll develop it for a few years, a lot of content creators will talk about how much fun it is, it'll be improved, new content will be added until they hit a wall with the IP, and then they'll move to the next thing.
'Games as a service' are precisely the OPPOSITE of what these guys want to do, and I applaud them for it. They've picked a lane, and they plan to stick to it. Big ups. I'm glad Scott sees that, too. It's something good and new and fun, and gets you away from the slog of other things so those other things become fresh again. And BHVR might look at this and take an idea or two for QoL things, like they did when VHS was popular, and when F13 was popular.
I'm not saying it'll always be good ideas (because this IS BHVR we're talking about), but when people excitedly run to other things, they tend to take the time to figure out what to do to keep DBD fresh. Honestly, we need a good asymm horror game every couple years to keep BHVR on their toes. Competition is good.

I am pretty damn disappointed by the info you dropped about Cook... I watched Bahroo play for a bit yesterday, one of the games was cook. I'm pretty sure at that time everyone thought that Cook's spotting actually revealed survivors to your team, and he was kinda spam marking survivors to make sure people knew where they were. Hell a follow up game he was Leatherface and was saying that Cook must be AFK, at some point found him actually trying to mark people and said that he must just not be doing well.
It just makes no sense. To me Cook actually seemed the most fun, I like support playstyles and chases aside to me he seemed to have the most to do which I liked. But even having to use voice chat aside, nobody is going to know the map well enough yet to call spotted survivors?
I think a super easy way to make it work well would be for Cook's spotting to be shared based on Grandpa's level. Let's say Cook spots someone and they're revealed for 5 seconds, for each level Grandpa has up to 5, Cook's spotting is shared for 1 second. I do get why the info isn't just shared, which is I imagine it'd be OP especially in the early game to basically perma spot any survivors.
One last note on it all, I believe the game is supposed to have perks and such on release? If so I imagine that sharing the spotted survivors is going to be something Cook can unlock. Problem is that assuming you aren't forced to take that, it will 100% be meta I imagine, which imo is an issue on its own.

typical DBD player analysis, teamwork = bad, killer had to do more than just hold w and left click = issue that needs to be reworked, left click being the main attack button = boring, not able for a single survivor to win against 3 killers = unfair unless they're the killer.
