Planning on towing my car out of state using a tow dolly and this was probably the best video I've seen assembling and disassembling the car+dolly. I appreciate you both. Stay safe and happy camping!
True. 1st time watching this video and I did squint at the way he first contacts the hitch with the ball, it clearly was laid down way forward that it should. I know this because when I cant break enough and this happens with my trailer, the hitch' latch gets stuck in the closed position and I have to mess with it with my hand to get it to open again. So it kind of not suprises me it came lose, glad noone was hurt! It gets easier with time :)
Even at miniute 2:58 you can see he didn't get it all the way down on the ball....I've done that a time or two....fortunately caught before something bad happened. Thx for the video.
This was the best video I’ve seen on the steps to connecting a tow dolly and car. I have a friend who needs to tow a car with a dolly and I’m going to help her. Thanks.
Thanks for your video. We just got & finished assembly of our acme tow dolly and will be doing a test tow shortly. Yep, I got our boards ready in case needed.
You guys are ahhhsome we are going thru the EXACT same thing as I watch this..thank you guys so much for easing our frustrating times! We are almost road ready and like y'all we are practicing Everything!
Nice, we just bought a MH and a Kar Kaddy SS used in good shape was giving to me so later this year we will be using it the car that we have can't be flat tow.
I just bought a used motorhome that comes with a car dolly. I don't expect to use the dolly, but this was interesting! Thanks for sharing your experience and tips
Always check the hitch is installed properly and pull up on the trailer hitch to see if ball is engaged then lock, next your wheel straps were put upside down, hooks on strap should be placed under the hook rail and not over the rail, hope I’m clear? Anyway thanks for the vid!
ALWAYS visually check your trailer "socket" goes inside the tow ball. I did not check ONCE because it was cold and raining and 30 minutes later it came off. Luckily the chains prevented a disaster.
When it comes to locking the steering wheel, I’m not sure if it’s required but, EZ loaders tell you to leave it unlocked. I guess you have to read the directions from the individual tow dolly manufacture.
Regarding locking the steering wheel. If your dolly pivots like the uhaul dollies, then lock it. If it doesn’t pivot, like yours appears not to, then do not lock it.
get some chain guard so chain don't hit the ground and cause a fire then cross them too usually you can pick them up CDF fire station for a small fee a lot of time there fee at camp Ground
I have to use boards also to load the wife's minivan, but they don't need to be nearly as long as yours!! Think for space sake, your could cut them down a lot!!
Surprisingly, we actually needed that length due to the air dam on the car. But we did switch to stackable blocks to save space. That makes it all easier to deal with. Now we have a new car that someday we'll flat tow! LoL
I was thinking the same thing on the length of your boards. I personally have a set that are 8 foot long but I only use them on a couple of extremely low vehicles I move from time to time on my flatbed trailer. If you didn’t find the stackable blocks with the size of your car you could have simply used a 3ft 2x6 or 2x8 and just laid it on top of the dollies ramp.
I can tell you everything you are about to learn. Your front is to long for the Unit , I see several Mistakes this man is doing being a retired over the roar Trucker over 50 years. On the straps you should pull the tail of the strap all the way through the Binder ratchet. Why? Because the way you have it it can jar loose. Owner and Operator as well as a DOT taught Safety Inspector in Transportation.
I’m not sure what you mean about the front being too long for the unit, but I have learned a great deal since this test run ( which was only in the parking lot). I quickly learned that about the straps, especially since the car we tow now has 14” tires. Thanks for your comments!
I have a question. If a tree fell in the woods, would my nosey neighbor still gripe about my motorhome? He called the police on me because I refused to move my motorhome right now. He became loud when the responding police told him it does not concern him. Boohoo, sniff. "Not in my noseyhood".
1) Use A Tripod. (Video was extremely shaky) 2) Best information provided (albeit brief) was the "4th attempt"). The rest was ???? 3) It would be extremely useful if you provided the dimensions of the last (4th attempt) ramp. Length of each individual planks and their thicknesses.
@@PortaParsonageDaveJenniPiatt And you don't have to unload your car and drag it in the motel, and then out to the car in the morning!!! Butt there is that free breakfast, for $100.00+++ a night!!!
Yup! First time hookup demonstates first time hookup. Haven’t had a problem since. Sorry it hurt so for you to watch. No harm was done to the camper, tow dolly, car or persons. Thanks for watching!
I’m sorry 😞 but you didn’t watch enough RUclips videos on how to hook up a trailer. I know this is two years old but you screwed up at the very beginning. I couldn’t finish your video. 👎👎👎
My wife said this was entertaining....😂😅😂😅straps are upside-down and no brake for California, otherwise great job. That cars is going to follow you both to fun places. 😅😅😅😅
@@RVerJerry thanks for your comment. We hope it was entertaining. That was our intent. That was our first time hooking up, and we’ve learned a lot since. We also hope that others learn from our mistakes. Thanks for subscribing!

Glad it was helpful!
7:40 It had nothing to do with it being locked, you can see at 2:58 the hitch was just resting on the ball
I'll check it out. Either way, I'm more careful now, and I always uae the pin. Thanks for your comment!

I saw 👀 that the hitch wasn’t on the ball I was screaming 😱 at the screen but y didn’t hear me.

It never happened again! Lol

We learned a lot from a couple practice runs. Better to learn in the driveway rather than out on the road. Enjoy!
Thanks for your video. We just got & finished assembly of our acme tow dolly and will be doing a test tow shortly. Yep, I got our boards ready in case needed.
Make a checklist and take your time hooking up.You’ll do fine.

It gets easier all the time and the experience of learning is awesome! Enjoy the adventure!
We tested our dolly all day yesterday..had to do the same with board ramp.. Working together and patience..We Are Experts!! Lol thanks again

Now you may feel more comfortable using one. First time setting up was long. Second time was a snap. What motorhome did you get?
@@PortaParsonageDaveJenniPiatt I got a 1999 Rexall Vision 27'. Plenty of room for me and 2 dogs to travel.
Thanks for the video. I didn't noticed a surge brake on the trailer.
You're right. Not all tow dollies have them. We also will be towing a much smaller car from now on. Eventually we'll be flat towing.
Always check the hitch is installed properly and pull up on the trailer hitch to see if ball is engaged then lock, next your wheel straps were put upside down, hooks on strap should be placed under the hook rail and not over the rail, hope I’m clear? Anyway thanks for the vid!
Yes, you are clear. Thanks for the tips!
Run drivers seat all the way forward, wrap seat belt around steering wheel and lock in keeper, then adjust drivers seat back taking out the slack.
Thanks! I should have thought of that. Next time…
Safe travels!!! Glad it worked for you!!😊
Thank you!
ALWAYS visually check your trailer "socket" goes inside the tow ball. I did not check ONCE because it was cold and raining and 30 minutes later it came off. Luckily the chains prevented a disaster.
Yes, we had that happen once, too, with a travel trailer.
When it comes to locking the steering wheel, I’m not sure if it’s required but, EZ loaders tell you to leave it unlocked. I guess you have to read the directions from the individual tow dolly manufacture.
Everything I read or saw suggested locking the wheel. I’m not sure what difference it really makes as long as the car is secure on the dolly.
Good thing he got out and checked before moving up the dolly the first try, he would of tore the bumper off
Turn the camera/phone horizontal, and use the wider-angle lens.
We’re learning.
If you have lights on the tow dolly I don't think you need the extra lights mounted on the car
That may be so. But we want to be safe, rather than sorry.
Nope, in some States the lights have to be on the rear of the towed vehicle. Best just to make it a practice.
Did you notice any problem being off center about 1"?
Not a bit! It trailed really well. Just don’t try backing up!
Hey, that looks pretty good.
Regarding locking the steering wheel. If your dolly pivots like the uhaul dollies, then lock it. If it doesn’t pivot, like yours appears not to, then do not lock it.
Our dolly does indeed pivot. While the steering on my car doesn’t lock, I have to lock it with the seatbelt. Thanks for your input!
Nice work!!
We made it through and learned some lessons along the way! Thanks!
It’s ok, I saw the hitch glitch too. I knew you would catch it. Would love to try flat tow some time with ours.
That's our plan next!
I have a Master Tow dolly I pull behind our Concord 300DS, it get easier every time I use it.
It certainly does! We can load and unload pretty quickly, and safety, now.
get some chain guard so chain don't hit the ground and cause a fire then cross them too usually you can pick them up CDF fire station for a small fee a lot of time there fee at camp Ground
Great suggestion, thanks!
You either didn’t set the hitch on the ball or you have a 2 5/16” ball. Either way, that is something that should always be checked.
Agreed. The ball is the proper size. I didn’t pin it when I hooked up.
Working with the tow dolly is much better now! Tell us about your experiences.

Your wiring should be ran through the Tongue and protected against rubbing the meta. with a wire cocer.
I’ll have to check to see how that would work.

We just drive our car to a motel. Bingo! Done!

Thanks! Didn’t think of that.
Don’t run over your straps those little holes in the ramps will cause nicks and cuts in the webbing.
I don’t do that anymore. Thanks.
Well that was painful to watch when he shagged around with trailer lead I could see , coupling wasn't on the ball,

Raise your Ball up and your front end will not hit the trailer.
